Why oh why?

Like most people I hate it when the alarm clock goes off in the morning and have to get out of my lovely warm bed wishing I could have just another half an hour or so! This time of year is especially difficult for me to get up in the morning when the house is chilly. The real trouble I am having at the moment is that I love my sleep but go to bed late, why oh why do I do this? I cannot make head nor tail of this, I am so tired when the alarm clock goes off and I tell myself every morning that I really must have an early night but there I am every night watching tv til I can't keep my eyes open any longer! Does anybody else do this? If I love my sleep so much why do I compromise it by going to sleep late?

There is a good quotation " Early to bed, Early to rise" You have to discipline yourself that if you have to wake up early you must sleep early.,

My quotation is late to bed, late to rise. Mind you I am NOT a morning person at the best of times.

Hi ya summerfed Hmm yes I have heard this saying and I wish I could go by wolfie's haha. Having kids means that there is little chance of having a lie-in. As for discipline, forget it haha have never been a one to be conventional haha Thanks for your response

Ha ha ha! Two of a kind ;0) I too love my sleep and I am a bit of a night owl, a nocturnal creature me, I find so much to do at night, usually on the computer! I am more active at night (no pun! or double entendre honest!) and when you are busy on the computer the time shoots by! Sometimes it's one or two in the morning when I think, I'd better turn in! When I have to get up I usually set my clock half an hour before I have to get up so I can have 30 minutes valuable snooze time, although I have been known in the past to stretch it to another 10, then another 10 and so the time I have left to get ready and have breakfast diminishes fast! I tend to have 10 hours sleep which is probably colossal, but I have been told that people with depression tend to sleep more. Nice to see you btw. Sending you a hug xxx

Hi ya wolfie34 I know long time no see, to be honest I dont think I am going to be around much longer, I just dont have the time for mylot anymore. Anyway, yes my alarm goes off about 15 mins before I am due to get up and is set to the radio so I tend to listen to the news and then I think oh I will get up then I listen to the next track which then becomes two more and so on. I hate having to get up! Take care hun and sending you a huge right back X

hi humbug, you're certainly not alone.my wife and i are exactly the same way.we're both night owls.we always go to sleep late and then regret it in the morning when we have to get up and we're not at all rested.yeah, this time of the year is even harder because it;s still dark when we have to wake up.we would then tell each other,ok tonight we should go to bed earlier but that rarely ever happens.the cycle just continues day after day.we love the weekends when we can sleep in.but unfortunately we can't really make up for the lack of sleep just over the weekend. i think one reason for our behavior is that nighttime is the only time we can really relax and have fun,in more ways than one,but one of the things we love to do is play computer games and they are so addicting,so it's really hard to turn off the computer and go to bed. sometimes we laugh at the idea that we're both still like teenagers.so carefree and lack of discipline in our lives.the fact that we don;t have kids is also a factor.so in essence we are 2 kids living together.but we both love life and have fun although sometimes there is a price to pay.

Hi,Humbug25! Yeah,I have this problem, too.I always want to get up later and I really hate it when the alarm clock rings. But I usually don't go to sleep until midnight.Sometimes I tell myself that I really need to go to bed since I still need to have classes next morning. But when I turn off my computer,it's usually already 11:40p.m. I guess maybe we just need some self-discipline.Or maybe before we go to bed,we can't resist the charm of the movies,TV series or whatever. But after we go to bed,we can't resist the charm of sleep. Have a nice day!

yeah if you sleep late and have to wake up early that's not much rest especially this time of the year I know what you mean I think there is something on your mind that makes you can't sleep early even if you want to I am a late sleeper but I don't always need to wake up early so I can sleep in as much as I want to maybe try to find what exactly is keeping you awake I wear socks and thermal when I sleep and then I have blanket so I stay warm no matter how cold it is inside

I do the same thing, and so does my daughter. I tend to get really sleepy around 10pm, but if I let myself get past that time (which I normally do) I am then fully awake and cannot go to sleep until around 2am. Then I wake up off and on during the night, plus my husband has insomnia so he keeps me woke. By the time I get into a good sleep around 4am, it is time to get up (5am). No wonder I am so tired all the time.

I would suggest that some of it may be that you love your free time. I'm like that myself. I do not work right now, but I will spend the day with my boyfriend and when I get home I just want to spend a little time in peace and quiet by myself I end up staying up a lot later than I intended too and then I sleep in the next morning, on top of which I still don't get enough hrs of sleep so I take a nap at my boyfriend's house. Grrr.

I do the same thing! Just last night I kept telling myself I was going to go to bed early, then something came on TV that I wanted to see and I stayed up until 2AM. I am on disability and don't work anymore, but I set the alarm so I can get up to exercise. I know that if I don't get up early and do it first, I won't do it at all. I hate when it goes off, because I hate to get out of bed, and sometimes I don't. I tell myself everyday, tomorrow will be different, I will get up early and do an hours worth of exercising etc. but when the alarm goes off, I start thinking of excuses to go back to sleep.

Hello going to bed early and getting up early is always a good habit, but if one keeps awake till late night, it is not possible to get up early morning.. Normally i go to bed by 10pm and get up between 5-6am depending upon weather.. There is no need to use alarm clock, my inner biological clock is set up.. Thank you so much for this nice discussion. Professor. . Cheers have a great day ahead. God bless you. Welcome always.

I think a lot of us 'burn the candle at both ends'. I work 12 hour nights, and spend up to an hour travelling each way to work. Yet I still stay up until nearly noon, then grab 5 hours poor sleep.By the end of my shift pattern I am often shattered. I can only presume that a lot of us like to believe that we are making the best of the time we have- when we would probably have better leisure time if we rested more when at work.

Yup! Been there, done that! Only, with me, it is usually the Internet or reading that keeps me up late. But very soon now, I'll be getting to bed early because deer hunting season opens this weekend and I'm an avid hunter. And I'm sure I'll have no trouble about staying up late after that because the day will tire me out so much that I'll have no choice but to crash early. ;-) I think getting up early is an issue for lots of people, but their reasons for staying up late vary widely. Perhaps it is because you just want to enjoy as much awake time as possible. And it is easy to get hooked into watching something on TV that you find interesting. Perhaps that immediate gratification is overpowering your sense of planning for the future (getting enough sleep for the next day). Just my two cents! :-)

Hi there GDTimothy Oh the internet keeps me up longer too like you! As I am a single mum I dont actually get a lot of 'me' time so I think I try to make the most of the awake time as you have mentioned! ... and I thank you for your two cents

LOL. You are not alone. I just hate it when the alarm goes off. So I tell myself I have another 30 minutes of sleep and I will wake up. Then I set the alarm another 30 minutes later and it always end up I am late. Then I take a different approach. I set the alarm 30 minutes earlier so that I can have extra 30 minutes sleep and still be on time. By the way, it does not matter even if I sleep earlier.

I used to do this too. I was very much a "night person" and really didn't like the idea of going to be before midnight at least! I was always tired during the morning and then one day I decided that enough was enough and I would need to adjust my sleeping habits properly and committed myself to go to bed at 11 pm. I did it and it felt strange, but when I woke the next morning, I felt so much better. I committed to do this again the following night and then the night after that. After a week, it felt completely natural to do this and now I do this all the time. I only sleep around 6 hours at most anyway, and I am usually awake around 5 a.m and out of bed not long after that. My days are so much longer now and I feel that I get so much more experience of life itself and can get so much done.. _Derek

Hi ya derek_a Oh I know I would feel so much better for it but it is just trying to make myself do it. I used to go to bed at 10.30 then I started to slip into going a bit later and a bit later and now it is rarely before midnight though last night I did go to bed at 11.30 ish but didnt feel any different this morning when the alarm went off haha. I think it is just a matter of breaking the habit of going to bed late and getting used to have a bit more sleep. Thanks for your response

Hi Humbug, I'm a night person and I can really relate to this because I always get up early in the morning as well. I get up to run my daughter to school and I also work second shift so I don't even get home until almost midnight. When I do get home, I just can;t go right to bed. I stay up until I'm ready to drop.

Hi, I too face this problem. I come home at around 2.00 in the night and then do my online work and then sleep at around 5.30 -6.00 in the morning and then I need to wake up at least at 12.00 to go to work again. I just can't wake up and keep changing the alarm and sleeping for another 10-15 minutes until I know that I really must wake up and get ready if I don't want to miss the shuttle to work. I hate waking up early!!!
