Dear friends, Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It attacks the nervous system and cause total paralaysis. It affects mainly kids under the age of 3. There is no cure for this disease but it can prevent by immunization. In India Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) is giving every month. This vaccine is free and volunteers are coming to our home for giving the medicine. The aim of the government is to eradicate the polio from the society. I think the government is successive on its venture, still minor cases are reported from rural areas. How about your place/country, is there any case of polio reported recently. What are steps taken by the government to eliminate the deadly disease from the society? Please share your views.

We are very lucky here in the UK and Polio is now something that we rarely hear about. It is routine for immunisation to be offered to all babies and booster doses are given to children before they start school and after they leave it. If we are travelling to countries that still have a risk of polio we can also get boosters.

Polio and other diseases have been pretty much wiped out here in the U.S. but in the past ten years many parents are refusing to vaccinate their children so I think we'll see the return of some, unfortunately.

Hi dear, Why they are refusing to provide the vaccine for their kids. If anybody attacked by the virus then it will be very unfortunate as there is no medicine for the disease. Hope they will change their mind and cooperate with the fight against polio. Thank you so much for your reply. Have a great weekend.

We have had a big increase in autism recently, like the past couple of decades. Many people think that it's the mercury or other things they put in the vaccines. Others are afraid of what the government might be putting in the vaccines. I vaccinated my sons because I figured everything is speculation but the diseases are real and I would take the chance of whatever else was in the vaccines. I knew I could never forgive myself if they got polio, smallpox or some other horrible disease due to my paranoia. I hope you're having a wonderful weekend, too. Mine is going well so far!

Dear friend, Here in Kerala in Kochi, there are government dispensaries and hospitals that provide free polio vaccine. I feel there is lot of change in our areas as it has been seen very few people are affected with this. Still very rarely I had seen kids affected with polio, a kid may be around 2 years old, that too long back. I feel government should take steps to give more hygienic atmosphere also various health centers with much advanced ways should be given or provided to public. The hygienic and health factors should be given importance from school level and also awareness campaigns, seminars, workshops and other public interactive methods should be implemented. Media too should be given importance.

Hello Sham, You are talking about the hundred percent literate, where people still are not aware about the importance of immunization? I think the campaigning is active in Kerala too as I am hearing the same from my relatives. Here the media is showing much interest and spreading awareness among people. Thank you so much for sharing. Have a great weekend.

I have not heard of any cases of polio in Australia and most of the children here are immunised against the disease. I lived in Italy during my early years and I recall being vaccinated all those years ago. As far as I know we have not had any cases here since the thirties and fifties when they had big outbreaks.

Hiya sreekala, Here there is a set system for Vaccination against Polio has been like that for Years now. Even so there are always a few cases of it. I knew a Girl at School who had this and she had to wear Calipers (leg Supports) all her life. Then when I was at Work I knew a Girl who had to wear Calipers and this was much later so the Disease had still got a good hold. She however got married and had four healthy Children. Well so did the other one I first mentioned. There are People here however that suffered the Post War lack of everything they also have had Polio with complications that will last them all their life. This happened as there were no Vaccinations because of the Civil War or there were not enough to go around. I am glad that the Scheme is doing well over there though. It´s time Polio was wiped off the face of the Earth for good.

Hello Angel, Unfortunately there is no treatment for people who attacked with polio virus. The possibility is to prevent the same with vaccination. I also felt happy to get good news from all over the world. The world is winning the battle against polio. I know some people attacked with polio, one lady who can’t walk and her younger sister is attacked only in one leg but she can walk and do works. This younger one is living for the elder sister now as the elder can’t live without the help of anybody. Thank you so much for sharing about your country. Have a great weekend.

Hiya Sreekala, No there is no actual cure for the disease itself but an improvement has taken place in many of their lives. They are able to be independent for themselves mostly. Others like the Ladies you have mentioned need more help too. There are still People who need lots of help here and in England also. England was a Country very badly attacked by Polio in the 1940 to the 1950´s. All my Children have had this Vaccine ages ago but again for the People who have never had the Vaccine I think that there is much better medicine now than before. Glad to be of help. Take care now. xxx

Hi Sree, really glad to learn that free polio vaccines are given to children from door to door by the the volunteers. I appreciate greatly toward the good deeds done by your country government as well as those enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. This will slow the dreaded polio from spreading and could save children below three from being a paralyzed person Free oral polio vaccine has being given to new born babies in government obstetric hospitals and clinics since few decades year before. Yeah, my grown son is one of the fortunate beneficiaries It's effective only for a kid to finish the three oral dosages accordingly. We should bring our kid to the same clinic to take the second and last oral polio vaccines showing the clinic card with date and detail shown. Apart from taking the vaccine the doctor in charge would measure the weight and length of the baby followed by other necessary check up. Take care dear and happy posting

Hi dear, Yes, they are doing a great job by visiting each and every house and asking if there are any kids under the age of five. Once they find out the place then they are regular to that place on every alternative month or at the time of their campaign. I am too lucky to get those enthusiastic volunteers at my door step with the medicine for my younger one. He is happy to get the ink mark on his little finger and become proud on the same. Thank you so much for your reply. Take care and have a nice weekend.

Hi seekala I am in the US and we have not had any polio cases in many years as we started a nationwide polio vaccination back about sixty years and its been really effective. The vaccine was free and everyone was getting vaccinated so it paid off years later.when I was in my midtwenties there was a polio epidemic here and thus they come up with this vaccine and in that year every one was vaccinated free. and it has controlled it so well a case is now most uncommon.

Hi Hately, Here also the vaccination is free and people are going to each and every house to make sure that no kids left as unattended under the age of 5. Some rural areas, people are not educated and they may leave the immunization program so sending volunteers on door to door basis may help to give medicine to each child. I think Indian government is also on the path of success to remove this dangerous disease from the country. Thank you so much for your reply. Have a nice day.

Hi friend!Polio once used to be one of the dreadful disease in our country. It is really dreadful because the victim is most likely to become half paralyzed from waist down below. I have one cousin who suffered Polio and although she is not on wheelchair because she underwent some medication and therapy, her left foot is shorter and stouter than the other. Nowadays our government is giving free anti-polio vaccine to all Health Centers in in every locality so that Polio has been largely prevented already. Thanks to the wonder of medicine! Have a nice weekend!

Hi salonga, Yes, we have to be grateful as there is no treatment for polio. The only option is to prevent and getting two drops upto the age of five years is giving complete protection is really a relief. I know some people who can’t move as their both legs affected with polio, some are affected with one whole side. Thank you so much for your reply. Have a nice weekend.

Hi ravend, Viji is right, it not that much bad taste but not good taste either. That is the reason they are attracting kids with small gifts like cap, toys etc. Kids are more interested in the marks on the finger than drinking is the medicine. They just want to finish it off for getting the ink mark in their small finger and feel proud of the same. Thank you ravend for the participation. Have a nice day.

Hi sreekala, We should really appreciate govt steps in this particular matter, as they do a pulse polio twice in a year in Jan and July for children under 5 years of age apart form the regular dosage for just born babies at hospitals. Govt organizes in every small town village streets in schools community halls,Bust stations and railway stations for those who are on travel and publicize in all channels as a national service. The case have decreased rapidly compared to my childhood. Hope we completely eradicate it

Hi clapro, Yes, the government is doing a great job. The OPV have been given every alternative month (as I have a small kid I know more about the frequency of pulse polio). I think the disease almost eradicated in the country as there is no report about the same recently. Thank you very much for your participation. Have a great weekend.
