You actually listen to your teacher? How boring!

I got an idea from a discussion I had just responded to for my own discussion. This student evidently in high school or maybe junior college was asking other mylotters what they did in class when the teacher was talking? As if the teacher was not talking to them, and I wondered how many mylotters see school as a place to play nowdays and actually never listen to the teacher when she is talking? I was so appalled I just sat there trying to figure out what this person figured the teacher was doing talking to them? Maybe he thought she was talking to G od or maybe she really was' asking God how on earth do I get these kid's attention? your take on this phenomenon.

I admit I was a typical kid, mostly paid attention, but if I got bored I drew pictures or passed notes or whispered or whatever, but I still paid enough attention to get by. And if it was interesting, I actually listened!

hi dawn yes I think down in grade school I was just a typical kid too but I wrote poems and once the teacher caught me and read my poem out loud to the class. In stead of laughing at me they were 'all real quiet and then I got called to the principals office. I was shaking but he said,"You do not belong in this class. next year I am promoting you from five grade to seventh grade as you can do the work. that poem showed me you do not belong in grade school any longer.: I was both scared and thrilled too

When I was in school (a million years ago!) I would listen to the teacher until I got bored...or if I already knew the information, I didn't listen. When I was in college I had to take a course on Windows, which I already knew how to use. There were two students who knew absolutely nothing so they always had questions and the instructor very patiently went over whatever it was she had been showing us alllll over again. That's when I brought up Solitaire, which I had minimized on the desktop. If we had had internet access in that room I would have been on the web. In general though, if students don't pay attention in class, they usually miss something which forces them to go to other sources...like their friends...to find it.

some kids just dont care to learn anything. or they are ones like my oldest that need moved up to a higher grade early. either way, they should either be moved up where they will have challenge and not be bored cause its to easy or be moved to a lower grade where they belong as being to slow to understand the teacher should maybe be put into special class with others like that or whatever

I think it is fun learning when we try not to make education a burden for us. I think it is okay to learn at one's own pace. Some teachers are very good at educating children and their classes are very good and they teach like telling a story and is able to make children interested without getting bored.

hi bunnybon oh I was so bored in the first grade and got held back then was skipped a grade and did so well that later on I was moved from fifth grade to seventh grade.I do think children should be moved up or down according to their needs. to really learn one must be really interested in the subjects.

funny the same thing happened to me. failed first grade cause i was uninterested. skipped 6st grade cause they said i had a high enough IQ, i should be in 7th and it was fine. i did fine in 9th also after i skipped 8th grade then, as my mom said. i lost my mind and ran away and got married. yes, i was stupid after all and its been downhill ever since.

When I was in school, once in a while I would doodle while the teacher was talking. But still (more or less) paid attention. What amazes me now, are the teachers that allow kids to use their cell phones in class, as long as they aren't talking. Which means that these kids are texting and tweeting their way through class. Then, at the end of the semester the grades are scaled so that everyone passes. I don't understand that logic.

his catdlai I would write poems occasionally if I got bored but I did listen enough to get g ood grades. I thought it was odd the teachers would allow cell phones in the class room. that scaling of grades when I was in junior college seemed so stupid as you got a good grade even when you might not merit it. I had complained that I wanted to earn that A or B not just get it because someone else had an f.I wanted to know if I really knew the stuff.see I went back to junior college in my early thirties so I was mature and really was there to learn.

I think many young people today would benefit from taking a year or two (or more) off between high school and college. Added maturity and better defined goals for themselves would help many to take their education opportunities more seriously.

You got me! Kids these days don't have any respect for anyone or anything. I know my grandparents would have whipped me til I couldn't sit down if I hadn't paid attention to my teachers. My grand parents would have known too as they were friends of most of teachers. Strange how life has changed and how nobody really knows their own classmates.

I literally drew all throughout high school, and I can't even draw that good! lol I did pay attention long enough to pass. I simply cannot comprehend actually listening to every word a teacher says. I am always respectful, I do as the teacher asks and try to get them under the impression I really truly care.

hi foofermen and glory I wrote poems and sometimes the teacher would catch me and then she got to where she realized what was going on and I was pushed up a grade and really got challenged. oh yeah not the boss. lol staff meetings could be sort of boring. we had them in the library and the subject was always that the county was almost broke and we would not be getting raises. oh yeah

hi gabs I have wondered that myself and too so many have computers and learn somethings and then come to school and think this is a waste of my time, I am so smart I don't need to listen to her. Sometimes I wonder 'at parents too as when I was a kid my parents would get on me if I did not get a good grade. they cared that I get a good education and told me I had to do my part by listening to my teacher a d also studying hard.We were also trained to respect our elders whether our teachers or the family doctor or the people on the next farm.'Why are some parents now days not participating in their children's school lives?

I had one prof in college who spoke so slowly, read from the book (he wrote it after all) and anything he was going to test on he almost always repeated 3 times. I took notes in the class, I also copied stories in the class (an interesting task on those tiny college desks). I made B's and A's in his class BTW, so I mustta been doing something right... Couldn't do that in any other class tho...

hi ElicBxn I had one in college who sort of drowned and one day I fell asleed and actually snored. He was interesting to listen to only if he had not droned on without ever lifting his voice. I taped his lectures as I would miss some of the words. He got so he would raise and lower his voice so then I realized he was actually an interesting lecturer.

I think the simple fact that they can do the work they know, for example if a child has problems in math, they can take a math class that challenges them, but not so much that is overwhelms them. Then if they are good in English, they can take a class that is right for them. This way it make sit interesting to them too. This is also why I love online classes. Plus I have flexible time and though at my age I don't care about making friends as much as getting good grades, but children are not like this, at least most are not..

When it was an interesting teacher who taught the subject it wasn't hard at all to listen and learn. It is the teachers that do not care how they teach, they do as the rules tell them and do not do any extra for the kids. Some teachers don't even get it, that they are helping to develop the minds of our future. My youngest is going to school to be a teacher. Her reason for this is because of the teachers that were uncaring to notice the students that needed extra help.

hi Youreyes4today y ou are so right , the teachers must have reall passion for their subjects and want to help the kids learn not just follow a game plan but go beyond and improvise to eacite the kids, I had a teacher in thefifth grade who would take us on field trips t o get an up close look at whatever we were studying. this was so excigting for us and she helped me to skip a grade because she got me so interested in learning.

I actually have some classmates who always talk in class- I really hate it because they are guys and have really loud voices (they don't even respect the teacher who is talking in front and trying here best to make us understand the lesson).. I always listen to the teacher when he or she is discussing something but once in a while I talk to my seatmate but not for the entire duration of the class.

hi lady I really feel that students should try to learn by listening to their teacher no matter if shes boring or not as it is part of their responsibilty to help the teacher to teach them. The student will have plenty of time after his classes to talk to friends and play aro und. the classroom is not the place to play in at all.

hilady I do feel for teachers that r eally want to make a d ifference then talk to a class of kids who are not interested ejnough to listen to her. I would never teach as I have about as much patience as a flea. I would be on their cases if I saw they were not listening to me. Sure some teachers are not so good but s till the kids should have been taught by their parents to behave in class and to listen to the teacher.

It depends on the subject the teacher was discussing. If she/he catches my attention, probably she's got an interesting topic to tell. But have you ever wonder why some teachers are boring? Perhaps we bore them too. Maybe they think we are one lousy kind of listener that they don't even bother to make us listen to them.I commend all my teachers who made me listen to them even if I feel dozing off.

hi AJsmom yes I sure do agree. even in college I had teachers who turned me off the subject even though it was one that was required. While I had others who enjoyed what they were teaching and had innovative and interesting ways of presenting what we needed to learn.Anyone can just open a dull book a nd drone away practically reading from the page 'but a passionate teacher will draw you into her subject and make you really care to learn about it.those are the teachers one always remembers.

The teachers talk to teach kids on stuff. people should realize that it's not merely talking. You get to learn from what shes saying. Thats what really saddens me in this new generation, they tend to see only a part of the whole picture. As for me I can say i'm a good student. I pay attention most of the time, however there are really times you can't avoid to slip and slack once in a while.

hi zoeandrea yes I think the kids just do not realize if they will stick around and listen, sooner or later its all going to make good sense. I was always a pretty good student as it was during the second world war years and high school students and parents alike were worried as a lot of us knew the boys in our senior class' were all eventually going to be drafted so we all studied and listened more that last year than ever before as we did not know what was going to happen next. the war had struck home as we were now getting involved and this was real life, not a war movie that you could leave and know it was not real.

Hi Hately and and all other responders. I was a normal student listening to teacher in the class. I could never think of doing anything else while in class. True, sometimes I drew and doodled on my notebooks, but rarely talked. teacher was always someone to be revered and scared of. But I always wanted to finish off with studies as soon as possible so that I could work and be my own boss. I sadly learnt that was not what happened once you left school. And strangely, getting back to studies after two years of working is fun. I love to learn new things. I am a pen and paper person, so the studies nowadays through technology does not have the same charm. But I like it nonetheless.

How interesting...I can appreciate becoming bored when the teacher is exploring a subject that may not be the student’s favourite but to question what to do while the teacher is talking is strange…I mean what do these kids think the teacher is doing up there? I wonder if it ever occurred to them that he or she is speaking with them and it is just human common courtesy to listen when being spoken to!

I mean what the heck did they think she was doing if not talking to them and why did they think they did not have to listen and p ay attention. I would hate to be a teacher now days. C ommon courtesy did not seem to be in this one young mylotter's vocabulary but he was interested in how others spent their time when the teacher was talking as if she had nothing to do with them. wow.

Hi Hatley, i admit this, i used to get bore of listening to my English Teacher lecture in the class, after lunch we used to have social studies subject was so boring but the teacher was so good in explaining so we used to hear. We all like that teacher, till today some time i feel to meet that teacher. And some of the subject moral science, i used to get sleep, that is such a bore subject for me at those times. And one more subject is our mother tongue Telugu, if that teacher comes we all used to get upset because teacher also bore, we really not interest to hear to her. That telugu teacher used to get angry on us and shouts also but we all laugh for her shout (childhood is much good day, we even don't know those things will hurt her or not, all the time fun time, those are wonder years really)Thanks you made me to remember all my naughty things when i was in school. Have a good day.

hi jotomy I always felt if a teacher is bpring its because he or she is not into her subject. I think if a te acher is really passionate about her subject the students are not going to pay any attention. I got interested in botany from my Fourth grade teacher who was passionate about nature and took us on a walk around our small town . she taught us the names of the various trees and we all took leaves to press and make a collection of. I put mine into a nice unlined notebook and wrote a caption under each leaf and gave the species and the name of the tree.I remember being excited at learning about the Catalpa tree as I had never seen one before and we had a lot of different trees on our farm. This trigger my love of botany which helped when my husband ran a lawn and garden service and I helped him.Back then I really knew the names of most plants used in gardens here in Southern California. I often went with him and helped plant flowers, shrubs and treees too.

I think the teacher makes the discussion boring. That is why the students are not listening. If the teacher only talks endlessly and there is no participation in the class the students will get bored. I had history and politics classes before but I enjoy it and listen because the teacher presents the lesson in lively way.

hi angelic yes indeed as those who I remember fondly were the ones who made the subject really exciting as they were passionagte about their' teaching and often they would get a back and forth discussion going in our class room;Nobody was bored as we all had fun in her classses. some who taught me history just droned on and on about dates so it felt like being in a room with dust in the air.and he did not even seem to like what he was teaching I do no know why a person who does not even liketo teach wou ld inflict himself or herself on impressionable young people.

I did feel so embarrassed. b ut someone clued this professor in and he started lifting his voice. I taped his lectures as I did not always get all his words. but when he started almost yelling p art of his sentences I realized what he was sayng really was interesting. I know we all go into classes actually wanting to learn and a bad or poor teacher can turn our love of learning off.
