Hi pergie! I think these kinds of gifts are the best, the very best! Memories are worth everything and last a lifetime while 'stuff' gets old, lost, broken or outdated. I just responded to another discussion very similar to this one because I feel as strongly as you do about this. It hurts my psyche to see the Christmas stuff being put on the store shelves even before Halloween! It seems that all the stores have more and more space dedicated solely to Christmas stuff each year. I wouldn't be surprised to find year-round Christmas stuff stores one day. Time spent together or doing what makes our loved ones happy is worth more than another scarf or tie. When I responded in the other discussion, I mentioned giving everyone a gift of a holiday, a vacation, just time to get away and enjoy, relax and forget about the day-to-day grind because that kind of gift will last as long as our memoriess do. (I was going to say "forever" but, well, you know how it is, we get older and forget more stuff all the time. LOL) Yeah, I like spending these days before Christmas in my kitchen, baking the cookies, cakes, breads and pies that I give to my loved ones (at least the ones that make it until Christmas ), not in the stores, trying to avoid the pushing, shoving shoppers and picking through all the glittery, pre-packaged and overpackaged stuff. You definitely have the right idea. One year, I gave my parents each a gift of me for a day... a day of doing whatever they wanted me for... cleaning, shopping, cooking, just sitting and talking, playing card or board games, whatever. They LOVED that gift!

Oops...I didn't realize there was another discussion so similar...I wonder if I will be "dust!" Like you, Marti....I would sooner be creating memories in the kitchen..than fighting for parking spots..standing in line-ups, attempting to get my shopping cart from one end of the aisle to another...even fighting for shopping carts..YIKES! YES...I think a gift of your time is spectacular, and that is what I give the "seniors" at the complex I care for! I also go out and get each one of them a small Xmas tree, being that we are rural and can cut under the power lines! I am beginning to really abhor all the overpackaging, like you, and the dispersal of that obnoxious stuff...so I really find that a day of "memories" carries so much less environmental impact, and I truly am trying to make a difference on a day to day basis. So nice to hear from you, Marti....and I hope the weather is being co-operative! HUGZ and Cheers, dear one! Sure missed not seeing you this year..maybe 2011?

I don't think this discussion will disappear. I think there is enough of a difference for it to be validated. Our weather is still strange but at least it hasn't snowed yet this year. (Knock on wood!) Last year at this time, we already had about 3 feet of snow. It has just been cold... very cold. We didn't have much of an Autumn; went straight from summer right into winter. Today, we were actually under a tornado watch which is bizarre for late November. But, a really strong cold front just blasted through, giving us rain (flooding) and very strong winds. Strange but not snow so I'm happy. Now, about 2011, one good thing has already happened. I found my old passport!!! (My avatar here is my photo from my first passport.) I'm trying to find the time to go get it renewed, perhaps next week. Things are settling down a bit on the physical front, meaning that I'm almost entirely healed from my spine surgery and my toes are almost healed from having two ingrown toenails fixed. So, I'll be getting my passport renewed and I'll be all set to take trips. My husband asked me if I'd like to move to Washington State because he had a really good job offer from there. Who knows? I've never been on that side of the continent, neither here nor Canada. Washington isn't too far from you! I do want to travel and my spine surgery was a life-altering experience for me. I'm going to stop saying I want to do things and just go do them. So, I have a feeling that I'll be able to visit you in 2011.

You betcha..they all have toooooo much stuff, and everyone on my list keeps telling me how they are trying to reduce..STUFF! Thanks for the compliment, dear Lady! And there is a great deal of enjoyment (selfish me) that can be gleaned from looking at their pictures after the experience is over...or just listening to them relate how enjoyable their time was! I don't know if you have "Groupon" or "wagjag" in Tn...but they both are great..What it is is a group of "cyber" shoppers..and the organizers go to different spas, hotels, restaurants, hairdressers..pubs, clothing stores and guarantee them so many sales...(lots) if they offer a good discount. Each day, we are notified was the discounted item is today (some up to 80% off) and you just purchase what you want. You name it, you can find it thru them! Huge savings, and the cost is just the time on your computer. Hope you're having a spectacular day...LUV & HUGZ!

I think your choice of gifts are extrodinary! Those are the gifts that can be truely appreciated and remembered forever. I think there is nothing better than a thoughtful and personal gift. An experience that you may not have normally had. I would love any one of those gifts and if I had just one of them I would feel so honored that I wouldn't expect another thing from anyone. Nothing would really compare anyway. Some of the gifts that I have held closest to my heart have been the ones that weren't expensive nor trendy. I cherish the pictures my children drew for me or the ornaments they took so much time on making for me. The best Christmas present I ever got was the first Christmas I spent with my grandmother after being reunited with her around the age of 28. We had been estranged since I was around 7 years old...long story...but anyway I had nothing to remind me of the family when I left home...it had not been allowed that I take anything. That Christmas my grandmother had put together a scrapbook for me! It had pictures of me as a baby and of her with me...of my mother as a girl..it even had pictures of the side of the family that had raised me! I was so happy I was in tears. The funny thing was that I had made her one too! One of my children as infants and of the years that we had been apart. It was a wonderful Christmas.

OHHH Jen...Knowing somewhat, the story of your challenged, upheavaled "younger life" and the lack of your maternal involvement...this extraordinary reconnection has warmed my heart...gave me both goose bumps and tears. What a spectacular memory..and GIFT---both you gave each other. NOT just the scrapbook of memories, but the inclusion of each other, in your lives, finally! It gives you that warm feeling of being grounded...and belonging! A perfect Christmas...right up there with BABY's 1st Christmas, in my mind! NO JEN...there's NO amount of money THAT could buy the GIFT of family. You SOOOOOO deserve these beautiful moments in your emotional life, dear Jen. You will always be, in my mind, the rainbow Girl..the one with the pot of gold, at the end...not the picture I sent you...LOL! Speaking of rainbows...dear JEN---in early November, I went to the Mainland to visit with my son (T.J.) for the weekend...after he picked me up from the Ferry and we were driving along the causeway...something I have NEVER seen in my life before..TWO..yes, TWO perfectly brilliant rainbows..interarched with each other..SO,SO beautiful AND you were my first thought!

It is very flattering to be thought of when witnessing such a beautiful thing..kinda the way that you want to be remembered...you know? It was a wonderful five years that I had with that grandmother. It was like we had never been away from one another. It was quite fateful too the way we ran across one another. It was a whirlwind of emotion as she swept me from my small town and into California and Las Vegas...not just once but a couple of times. My first plane ride was to see her and she was proud of me and everything about me...it was a feeling of acceptance I had never known..at least not as an adult. I was finally a part of something and the one thing I knew was that she was on my side no matter what...we forget sometimes how nice it is to just have somone on your side. I miss her.

AND FOR YOU....I truly wish for you...the wonderful family gathering, the whole unit of your family gathered together to share the special joys of the season. You are right, those are special, special wants/desires and sometimes in this day and age..it is not so simple...as the family lives and works globally, and travel is difficult during the festive season. TO YOU, I wish the experience/memories of your family ALL gathered together..AGAIN! Cheers!

These are tough times...economically the world over...and pancy, your wishes would be very, very costly where I live. I don't think I would want to put the burden of asking for expensive "toys" on my wish list...now, or anytime. Those are the kind of things, I would feel I would be ogligated to buy for myself...but that is just me! Beyond all this, I hope you find a way to have a wonderful festive season! Cheers!

I love the idea. For many it is a suitable plan. Last year I wrote, printed and framed poems for my dad and his wife. We try to get together as family, as our presence is more important than presents. There are some in my family that need actual physical presents, and others that I am gifting in this way. I am on an earning mission to have enough money to send my daughter and son in law to a bed and breakfast on a date of their choice. It is near their home and run by an author and it would just be great. I have ordered my hubby equipment for his favorite activity, as the stuff he has is over forty years old, and fell apart recently. I cannot say what, he comes on MyLot from time to time. I would love to have useful stuff or meaningful experiences rather than just more to fill closets and drawers. My daughter and son in law limit presents both at Christmas and birthdays. They tell the girls, "At Christmas we want to celebrate that God loved us so much He sent Jesus" and "At your birthday we want to celebrate that God loved us so much, He sent us you." The girls get one set of clothes, a book, and a toy. It is enough.

So nice to hear from you, GardenGerty...and it doesn't surprise me at all, that your daughter and SIL are laying such wonderful groundwork for your grandchildren...LOOK whom "Gramma" is! And I truly think that would be a absolutely tremendous gift...a time away at a B&B...and I bet you will be doing the babysitting. Something they will cherish and talk about for years! Isn't it so much easier to shop on line, as I feel I can put a batch of cookies in the oven..(set the timer, of course), keep the home fires burning..& avoid the madding crowds! Even tho it is on-line, now it reminds me of the "old" days when our only source of Xmas shopping was the Sears Catalogue "Wish book"...filled out the order form, wrote the cheque, and hoped that "snail mail" would deliver on time! Take care, GG...and have a wonderful Holiday Season..Cheers!

I'm not doing gifts this year. I'm too broke. I asked my parents for some very high quality fleece clothing because I'm moving to the yukon and for the bus ticket to the yukon.

I do understand...Christmas can be very expensive, monetarily...but have you thought of giving the gift of yourself? Babysitting for your sister or brother..giving a couple days to your parents, and complete a job or task that they have put off doing? Some physical labour...lending a hand, they may appreciate this more than stuff. I wish you well on your journey to the Yukon, and truly hope you have researched your new environment thoroughly...have you tried here at myLot to see if there are persons that are part of this community that live there, and they could share some advice of living, work...etc.? Have a great experience!

Thats great, I love gifts like that, last year I bought my mother a day at the spa for mothers day, its also like buying good memories for them. Good idea! I dont want to sound all cheesy but all I want for christmas is to see my baby niece open her presents, last year she was too young to notice that anything was going on christmas day but this year I think she will love it, and since I dont have my own kids I get to spoil her instead!

Hi...Auntiescarf...OH YES..I fully concur, you have every right to make your little Angel Niece's eyes sparkle, and hear the sounds of joy and delight when she unwraps your gifts of happiness. And she is very lucky to have an Auntie like you to spoil her...I would NEVER wish to quash those spectacular memories! I wish you many this year...and for years to come! For me, my family....we are OVER-stuffed, and it's time to stop the nonsense! This is a trial run..but my conscience feels good about it! Especially being able to avoid the hustle and bustle...and the huge environmental impact all that shopping creates. Have a truly wonderful festive season...and Cheers!

yes, it is a great holiday. many shops will have a discount saling. yeah, you can choose some products. but be careful of being cheated by this.you know, if the shop show a high price and give you a discount, but the actual price is more high than its daily price. so when you want to but something in this holidays. you need to think a second. Be careful..

Thank you, hugh123..for your dire and earnest warnings, I appreciate your concern and do KNOW that I do NOT know it all when it comes to on-line shopping, and really am careful about my personal information! Also, I spend time appraising myself of the base costs of the "goods and Services" that I am interested in...and the "authors" of these two sites, do make every effort to bring it's members the best deals, at the best prices. Take care and Cheers!

Good morning...and thank you, so kindly, santosmarichris! Sounds to me like you are ready for a day of pampering at the spa! Do you have a "special" ear that you could put the bug in...LOL? We have one lovely Spa, on the Island, where I live...and if we plan early, and buy more than one "gift certificate"...we DO get a huge discount! I then have to decide whom would appreciate this gift..and whom would need it! Thank you, for the very kind words..and do hope there is a "spa day" in your Christmas gifts. Cheers!

Probably I would appreciate it! But then I want something tangible, something I can keep to remind me of the giver. It doesn't have to be expensive. It can be something crafted by the giver. It's just me, just wanting something I can hold!

I truly understand your wish for something concrete, something visual...but there come's a time in some people's lives that in your accumulation of riches...the most GOLDEN things are memories...as they cannot be destroyed. Anything tangible can so easily disappear...but no-one can steal from you, wonderful memories and experiences! And as I related earlier...all of these tangible things come at the cost of a huge environmental imprint...of which I am making an effort to reduce! Take care .. and Cheers!

Hello pergammano! All I want for christmas is... my two front teeth! Lol, kidding aside, I have simple wish on Christmas and that would be that our family will be together again, we actually live far from each other and we tend to go home once a year, and with Christmas as the most important holday of the year, I would like my family to be complete again. Cheers!

I am so glad, that Christmas is the time your family gathers together to re-inforce and re-ignite the family spirit! In this day and age, with jobs, opportunities being so global..families are often world's apart, and travelling during the festive season can be extremely challenging! There is nothing more heartwarming than looking into a sea of faces, knowing all are loved members of your family...and that you are gathered together..to share each other and the spirit of the season. I pray you wish will come true! Cheers!

I am sorry, your hair doesn't grow...or is it that it is just NOT fast enough for you..LOL? Where I live, hair extensions are a huge investment, so I wouldn't dare put that on my "wish list!" And I think, my family would say, "be patient!" I am truly hoping, that if your wish comes true..you will be as happy as you think you might be! Take care and Cheers!

I think that is awesome! And like you I think we are cluttering our lives way too much! I like the experience. I travel alot and also have adopted that theory when I travel. I am not buying any more "stuff"....I am using my photos to capture the memory...then scrapbook them so I can look at them all the time. Great idea's you have! I bet they will love it!

Thank you...jillhill! I used to gather "stuff"...and after spending a good part (every spare moment) last year of sorting and taking stuff to our "Re-Store" (a FREE store for re-homing) and listening to all my friends and family talking about doing the same...I decided to stop the "stuff!"---even home-made stuff, of which I have over embellished people with in the past! Getting pretty consciencious about my "environmental footprint" too, and "you're so right" by giving memories, it really lessens my impact. And the savings are great using "Groupon & Wagjag!" Take care, jill...nice to hear from you again, the last time we talked was shortly after your visit to Oceantiara. Travelling is definitely being added to my "bucket list" for 2011! Have a spectacular Festive Season.

Maybe this year, why not have everyone in the family make something with their own hands...even if that involves buying "stuff" to make it with? That way it would seem a lot more personal. cd

We are a very crafty family...and many, many of our gifts over the years have been personal crafts from "pergamano" to knitting, woodwork to baking...jams, jellies, peppers, and even hard to find seeds, but it still ends up being "stuff" albeit usable! Trying to reduce "waste" materials like wrapping, ribbons and bows...and the disposing of such is what is spurring us on! Have a great day...and Cheers!
