Is childish just another word for stupid?

Hmmm I think it does because whenever someone does something stupid they compare it to what they think mature is then they call it childish. What is mature? Can you compare and contrast mature and immature for me because I think I'm very immature but I can't explain it very well? Are you mature or immature?

Immature means green and undeveloped. Immature can mean less than street smart. It can mean all the undeveloped self things like anger, jealous, gluntiness. I think mature means that you act soicially exceptable in public. Calm, gracious, etc. Instead of mean and immediately angry if things don't go your way. Maturity is being able to keep in control and acting mannerly and calm. Does this help?

You mean acceptable? So if I am acting rude in order to see what people's reactions are for my study would I be immature? I rarely get angry at anything because of my beliefs so am I mature in a way? What if you were like that since you were a kid is there such thing as immature about you? Or would that mean you did not enjoy your childhood? By the way, I'm not really looking for definite answers just looking for how people reason. I'm apparently more interested on people's reasoning skills than their knowledge.

Yes, acceptable is what I meant. Yes, I think if you are thinking and not doing something that is mature. If you have been a certain way since childhood then that is just a part of who you are. Can be child like. Depends. Is it detrimental? I think reasoning has to do with cognitive skills. It does take some thought. Reasoning is a thought pattern and doesn't have to do with knowledge.

I think childish is totally different from stupid, but when someone acts a bit childish, it will make him/her look stupid. well, actually being mature or immature can be measured by how they think about cases in life and how they solve problems. A mature ones will think and solve their problem wiser than those who are immature. for this I said those who are immature will look stupid though may be in fact they are cleverer but they just can't manage it well.

Your profile pic looks like Sarah Geronimo, a singer from the Philippines. Anyway, your view makes sense too and I would add that childish acts seem stupid as other adults see it but that's an outside view but maybe from within the person who did the childish action it may be an act of joyous childhood memory re enacted. I just made that up, hopefully it makes sense.

wow! i have a singer face ha ha okay, that's a nice argument but in my mind what-so-called childish is not only what appears. One can dress up as teenager but his/her mind as mature as an adult. What I called immature is about the way someone think and solve problem. It's only about mind. I never call those who playful as immature but I call them cheerful. who ever knows that inside those playful act there are wise and mature mind when they are faced to a problem.

Hi Gorilla, First of all, childish and stupid are NOT the same thing. I have met many very intelligent people who in my opinion are very immature in many ways. I think the measure of maturity is pretty much a matter of opinion to be honest. I've been called immature many many times and I don't look at myself that way. I'm 54 and have been on my own since I was 18. I have raised 4 beautiful, honest, hardworking, respectful and delightful people for the world...my contribution. I have supported myself and pay my bills. I work hard etc. I'm responsible so in my mind that makes me mature. I do enjoy my life and I'm not always real serious and so maybe I come across as childish sometimes. I don't know. Am I mature or immature? It all depends on who you ask.

Well, when someone has told me that I was behaving childishly, yes...it made me feel as if I were acting stupidly...like an idiot. I guess I'd feel this if I were reacting in anger and someone told me that. I find it insulting.

You are mature in my opinion. I think the question I really meant to ask is what does it mean when you are called childish? Or what do you think at the moment that you were called childish? Did you feel stupid, or child like?

No, childish is another word for immature, stupid is a lack of knowledge or information, sometimes a willing lack of either trait. Maturity is how you are capable of taking on concepts and ideas and dealing with them in an adult fashion. Or to take responsibilities for one's actions and not push it off onto outside factors. It can also be when you are not taking something seriously when you should be, you are acting childish or immature. Also if you throw a temper tantrum when you don't get your way (taking it out on others, blaming others, getting upset and leaving in a huff, etc) you are acting immature.

So maturity is something like playing safe and immaturity and childishness is something like gambling because you take more risks, right?

I don't think childish is the same as stupid. Being childish or immatured is the remarks to the young people, no matter what ... the obvious difference between peoples might be on their nature or character, likewise the calm person and the anger person. This immatured issue is because the young people normally doesn't have much life experiences, and it depends on his life and surroundings. But as time goes by, through the lessons in life which caused from occasions and problems, you would learn something from it and that's the mature minds come from. Like a pearl, it needs time and process to make it beautiful, not instant. Being stupid is another thing, I might say it's stupid if you couldn't learn from the occasions in your life to be a better person.

Pearl takes time to form but you just need to put an irritant first to the shellfish that forms it. What are the differences of an immature person to a mature person?

The irritant just to take out the shellfish, not to determine the quality or beauty. While the value of the pearl based on the colour which determined by the light and depth level. And the most expensive one is the pearl that located on the deepest level which not getting the light. The difference between immature and mature, IMO, the mature person could differentiate which is bad or good for him also for others. He would not push his ego just to get into a certain condition that actually might not be good.

Being stupid is completly different than being immature. Stupid is not learning from your mistakes whereas childish is not acting in a grown-up manner which is not in itself stupid.

Personally for me, I would consider being mature especially as an adult is when a person is willing to accept responsibility for everything they do, and not act like a child when you try to help them with something. Also they need to not except everyone to just always hand them something never trying to go for anything themselves. Like cutting down their income, working Full time and still expecting Welfare to help them Financially with medical, Food Stamps, housing and even money even while having others living in their house that are working as well.

Stupid is worse than being childish. Stupid means you Can't learn Anything , Ever. A child is a young person. They will in time learn to be mature . But with a stupid person . there is no hope. Ingonrant , There is hope . They just didn't know whatever and they Can leran. There are many ways people can see maturity. I see it this way. When a person , regardless of age, can act in the most sensible way. They can see how stupid some actions can be , how harmful to them or others. So being immature is when you act in a way that may be harmful and yes stupid and they don't care.

Hmmmmm. So childish is a nicer word to say? Or is it dependent on the intent or tone of voice when it was spoken to someone?

Words like mature and immature are used in comparison. You can be matured than me. And I can be matured than some other person. It depends. Childish does not always mean stupid. A matured intelligent and smart person can act childish. Many people act childish because they enjoy it. They can interact with kids and be just like them in no time. That does not mean they are stupid. But yes, the word is used mostly to mean stupid. And that is quite sad.

In my opinion the meaning of childish is not being stupid but it is like you are a carefree person. the definition of stupid is way different from being childish and some synonyms are child-like, immature, irresponsible, self-indulgent and a lot more. For me being childish sometimes is kinda cute ^_^. You don't have to be too serious in life. Being childish makes you see the things or makes you catch up the things you have forgotten that makes you happy in your daily life. Learn to live with ease and savor each day.

you can consider it an insult if you refer to a mature(15 or + years) as childish.

I don't think so. Childish does not always mean stupid. I mean childish things are things that you do with innocence, with joy and without caring about the consequences and you do it for fun. But stupid things are like illogical and not always for fun. You get more judged by people for doing stupid things than childish things. I think they are different things.

No ... well yeah, but only if you're stu-- ... you see, "childish" is often 'acting-out without knowing the whole situation'; "stupidity" is also 'acting without knowing the whole situation ... acting LIKE YOU DO KNOW THE WHOLE SITUATION while you don't'---often-confused with 'ignorant' (which is literally 'without knowledge-of') Very-little semantic difference, I know; but very definite (like the distance between 'shaving-off your moustach' and 'shaving-off your upper-lip', the difference between 'starting to say "only if you're studying inferential language"' & 'starting to say "... only if you're stupid."')

Actually childish doesn't exactly mean stupid. Childish means doing something that is often seen as what's done by a child, playing a fool, acting cute etc. Well with regards to your question, mature means that one has completed his/her full growth and looking more and more like an adult and actions that are equivalent to an adult. Immature, especially immaturity in adults means lacking the expected level of maturity in adults, actions which indicate less thinking and irrational. I guess you aren't immature, maybe it's what other people told you which influenced you very much. Don't take it to heart

I don't think you are being stupid if you are being childish. I would see it as being immature instead. To be stupid means to be lacking in intelligence. Being childish has nothing to do with that.

It has nothing to do with smart or stupid. There are plenty of very smart people that are immature, and plenty of people that are not too bright, but are mature. It's hard to define mature-i guess it means different things to different people. What comes to mind for me is someone who loses their composure if things don't go the way they like, or someone is being rude to them. A mature person will remain calm, even if they have to defend themselves against a rude person. An immature person will start yelling and having a tantrum. Even this is not always a good definition of mature and immature because sometimes people lose their cool because their under stress. But it's not connected to intelligence i don't think

I think I act mature most of the times, but there are those days that I am also immature.. Although childish and stupid seem to be connected or similar, they don't really mean the same. Being childish is being immature while being stupid means lack of intelligence..or even dull

Doing in a way or with the characteristic of a child is what we call childish. Acting such one can be acceptable if done in the purpose of being playful, cute and sweet towards other people. There's nothing wrong with it but the problem is some don't seem to know what is charming and what it is simply irritating. Being childish in a negative way may connect to stupidity as they both implies pointless or worthless actions. Mature corresponds to physical, mental & emotional evolved condition of a person whereas actions or behavior are in accordance of the situation while immature is the inability to act or respond to a certain things appropriately.
