Well, in another discussion I started I talked about making Oatmeal Raisin cookies. My mom taught me most I know as far as cooking/baking goes. I do things the old fashioned way every chance I get. This is a photo of one tray of fresh cookies on my porch rail outside cooling off. I can recall as a kid my mom and neighbors with fresh baked goodies sitting on porches or windowsills in all seasons. Even though it was maybe 5 degrees outside I still did it. How do you cool your fresh baked goodies? Anything special about your baking/cooking skills?

I just put my cookies on newspaper to let them cool but Grandma used to put her pies on the windowsill. I like the old ways of doing things, though. I never use mixes, I bake from scratch. I think it tastes better! When I make cookies I never use a fork or other tool to mix the dough, I use my hands. Grandma did, Mom did and so do I. I remember starting to do that in Home Economics and the teacher was horrified!

Teachers tend to get horrified about a lot of things, LOL. I think mhy family would say that once it baked it was sanitized anyway. Nowadays everyone wears gloves to do everything. Just wait til the know how many things are on those plastic gloves.

I remember working at a fast food restaurant back in the early 70's, a White Castle. We didn't wear gloves but the rules were we had to wash our hands and the supervisor made darn sure that anyone entering the kitchen at any time did so. It kinda freaks me out to see all those gloves, as if there's something there that they don't want to touch!

I haven't baked a cake from scratch in some 30 years I think.
But then, I'm a man. HAHAHA! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

hi Grandpa Bob I was just laughing remembering the looks on my moms face as she found the tamed calf had found her warm cookies sitting on a windoe sill with the window u p. He was munching away as she grabbed the cookie sheet ,hauled it inside and closed the window. We had never known a calf liked raisin jumbles but he did . He had eaten half of them.
I learned to bake too by being taught by my mom.Farm girl kids always did as on a farm most everyone but the dogs or cats pitches in to help. I am
grateful to have grown up on a farm.My mom made the best filled cookies with raisin filling. I tried out a recipe for them when I was still in my own apartment and they were good but not like she made them at all.I also tried my old standby baking powder biscuits and they were just plain awful. Here we do not get t o do any cooking or much of anything else so I come up here and use my computer.

Hi Grandpa Bob, long time no see....I would cool mine on a window sill if I had one and putting them on our outdoor railing is just asking for the neighbor dog to come over for a treat..
So I cool mine on a rack on the kitchen table..By the way, I commented; those cookies look great..:P

Hey Grandpa Bob! Well, I live in an apartment, so no sills here!
I have to just let my baked stuff cool off on top of the stove
and hope the cats stay away. I have the computer in the kitchen
so I "watch" the baked goods carefully. I was actually thinking
about making a banana bread, but unlike you, it's just a mix.
And nothing beats making baked stuff from scratch, I just
don't have alot of experience in baking. My family was big on
cooking, but not so much on baking! My Great Grandmother used
to make these incredible cookies, but never wrote anything
down so no one ever knew the recipe. One time my Mom tried to
make them. Well, they smelled great when they were in the oven.
But, when they cooled off they were hard as rocks and even
the dog couldn't bite into them!

We did not grow up cooling things outside, and I do not do it now. In the summer things would never cool off it is so hot here. In my other house when we would have big Thanksgiving we had a utility porch that was unheated and we would put the food there, or on the front porch. I guess this house does not lend itself as well to that. I am a pretty old fashioned cook, and I love good food.

yummy the cookies look so good. When I bake cookies they are all eaten up before I can cool them. lol. I usually try to cool them right on the cupboard,I never sat the cookies outside to cool.I just might have to do that the next time I bake cookies they might not get eaten so fast.

I just leave mine on the cupboard to cool..the brownies however I had to eat one while it was still warm. My mom also taught me what I know as did my grandma Kruse...she was a big german woman who was a bit brusk but had a big heart..and she showed her love by making the most rocking meals ever!

Yep, if you have cookie monster kids you'd never be able to get enough baked for another day.

Hey, that looks like a great way to cool your cookies. Winter weather would cool them off fast for sure.
I remember when I was a kid, my mom liked oatmeal cookies but she didn't like raisins so she substituted chocolate chips. Oh, those cookies were sooooo good and I haven't had them since I was a kid. And for some reason, this is the second posting that I've responded to this evening that mentioned cookies. Now, I'm really craving some cookies!
And I'm on a diet...

When I first looked at the photo, I thought to myself interesting to cool them outside. In all honesty I think mine would not make it out of the kitchen, as I would be anxious to bite into them
Kidding aside, I never thought about doing it that way and great idea as usually I leave them air temperature cool, but it makes all the hungry critters indoors too anxious, so I will remember that one.

She let out one yell,"That was for the Church Ladies Aide society. my cake" We all just looked at each other. My dad finally said,"we are sorry Margaret we did not know."" She was up late baking anouther cake for the ladies Aide. lol. I did not quite believe my dad as he had an odd grin on his face, and he was not much on grinning. a too serious man really.

Take it out of oven, tell kids they have to wait 10 minutes, watch it disappear...
