...and bombed innocent people to kingdom come, etc...are you entirely sure that well-meaning figures like mohammed and jesus really wanted that? as far as i can see no holy man has ever demanded killing.... ...and because you'll say, "they did it first", I'd like to say this is not an excuse. Your take?

hi jb wow I am your first how about that. No Jesus and Mohammed did not want killings at all. My take is its really scary and sick that some have a religion that they feel makes it right for them to kill all people who do not believe as they do. As for bombings of innocent people thats just plain sick and no excuse will clear them even oh they started it first. My take is a holy war has nothing holy about it at all.

Jesus was not a good and insightful man. Either He was who He said He was, the Son of God, or he was a madman. If you don't believe He was God, then you must believe he was, at the very least, a liar and trickster or, at the worst, a total lunatic.

whatever your beliefs, jesus was at the least a good and insightful man, so was mohammed. and the pair of them did struggle to improve human nature - jesus went for fairness, mohammed and wife worked for women. ahem

People have used the excuse of faith for milleniums to get power and kill each other. We may now know more about computers and cell phones but we are as primitive as we were when we lived on caves. It´s a pity that the people who follow these Masters, will not check first what they meant when they preached.

I don't have the same background as you - i.e a religious one - and that hass affected how I see the world.

I´m agnostic. And I don´t have a religious background in the sense of ever belonging to a church. But I have been interested always in how religions ans politics are woven together so many times.

same. sorry, i thought you were catholoc. i'm tired and sad of how much people hate each other even though they believe in the exact same religion. and sorry to the bible wotsits and the korans wotsits - it is the same belief, which could have truth.

I think you are pretty well right. It is as we get away from the actual teachings of our faith that we become more human than ever and more blood thirsty. I thought only kids tried to use that excuse of "He started it."

it's sad and it's old - look at northern ireland. the 'they started it' has been going on for so long, with so many deaths... etc israel/palestine have to come to an agreement and if you know how - peace prize

that's what bigots and fanatical people should think about even if they don't kill, they do hate and avenge both are not both enlightened beings teach to humankind there is certainly something wrong with bigots and fanatical people until they can answer the question you posed they will stay that way, sadly

I really don't think for one minute that these supposed holy men want any kind of violence, bled letting or warring. It is selfish man who want to have it all. Just like the road rage when the guy passes you on the freeway and gives you the finger because you aren't going fast enough and are in his way. Same mentality.

Very true jb. They are born with piety and anger I think.

it's not far off. add a spot of self righteousness and you've got it. piety and anger = recipe for disaster

It's probably about the land, like who gets what part of it. It's tiring really, and it's their governments' fault.

Is your "kingdom come" the same "kingdom come" as referenced in "Thy kingdom come"? Is it your contention that bombers of different religions send their innocent victims to the Christian God's Kingdom Come? If so, are bombers well-meaning too?

I saw this on a bumper sticker this morning: You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war. But I digress. If anybody comes on here quoting a holy man for "demanding killing", I would submit that he wasn't truly holy. As for "they did it first" - that is a legitimate excuse for self defense, but not for aggression. Some governments seem to have a problem distinguishing one from the other.

Well-meaning men with beards. Maybe what we need is a religion that's not stupposed to have been started by a well-meaning man with wide clothes and the optional beard? A religion started by a woman? A religion started by a blue bunny? Possibly a religion started by a troll. It would involve eating too much porridge and trampling people who tried to steal your porridge, but other than that it'd be pretty peaceful. As for the "They did it first" that is the worlds oldest excuse I think. Or maybe third oldest, after "not tonight, I've got a headache" and "teacher, the dog ate my homework!". Which in these modern times have become "Teacher, I couldn't bring my homework because my father turned off the internet connection yesterday to stop my brother from playing online games all night!" ...

I must agree jb! My take ... I loathe ALL war ... in any "civilized" society. specifically in this day and age, war is barbarism! IMO, to rely upon any "God" ... lending credence to barbaric acts, again, IMO is unacceptable. My further take ... had President Obama been the POTUS at 9/11, I believe he would have used ALL clandestine, special ops assets available to avenge a small eventhough very dangerous, violent group who were responsible for 9/11. I just can't believe that a President Obama would have deployed our sons and daughters, our entire military might ending uncounted innocent Iraqi lives to capture one man ultimately found hiding in a hole in the ground and/or one or more men now subsisting in caves!! I'm reminded of a question asked by a native american chief after long waring ... in many words he asked, WHERE ARE MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS??
