Writing two stories at one time. This is a challenge.

I had a dream one night that was an excellent story starter. Then the next night I had another dream that was an excellent story starter. I had two notebooks. So I started one and left of on page 17. Then I started another story in the 2nd notebook that is now on page 43. Both stories are fun, but they're also starting to get bogged down with extraneous stuff that if I were reading, I'd say, "Who cares," so I'm going to give them a break and renew again.

My dreams are either too scary or weird to write about, at least for me. I get most of my ideas from life and watching other people, and of course my imagination. Then again, your imagination might work best in your dreams..But if you get a book published before I do, I hope I am one of the first to know about it..

My problem isn't the writing, it's the rewriting and the details. I should take a course in writing. But I hated writing in college. Our professors wrote scarcastic stuff like, "could a person really do that?" I got so I couldn't write anything without imagining scarcastic responces to everything I wrote. I took two courses in English because I had to. One was Intro to Composition which turned me off to writing for years and the other was Poetry Appreciation. The second was a fun course.

Well, maybe some day you'll get a good one from your dreams. This is weird because most of my life, I haven't remembered my dreams at all. But my cats wake me up early, menopause is waking me up a lot, going to the bathroom a lot, etc. I can't sleep for very long. I might as well get something out of all of this!

No, my Professors were a pain in the A$$ to everyone and I had to take the class over. I almost ended up being thrown out of the Teaching program because they said I only earned a D. So I retook it and just barely received a C. Even with a C, they wanted to throw me out of teaching, I had to fight to stay in. They did NOT see potential. They say me doing something else with my life entirely that did NOT involve writing.

Sometimes, it happens that we have a dream that can be turned into a story or something. It has happened to me. If these stories work, and you can write both, then definitely go for! See where it leads you.

Thanks! So far, that's exactly what I've been doing and it's been a lot of fun!

I had a story like that and a friend came along and said - just skip it and so we did!

not skipping the story, skipping the boring part...

Maybe I'll skip the boring part on the rewrite, but it did make a segway to another part. Take care.

I'm having too much fun to skip both of those stories.

That is excellent. Just what you should do. Work hard on a story and then give it a rest. You will come back with a fresh resolve and new ideas for it. I have been working on two short stories and I have let them set awhile. I will come back to them when I am in the mood again and get them finished up.

Actually, that hasn't been a problem because my life is so crazy that I end up with lots of work all of a sudden or have to go bottle collecting to pay bills or something. I have one story that I just left in the middle and I need to go back to it. But I don't really feel like it right now. I had too many characters and too many stories. It was like a soap opera. You had two people here with one set of problems. Then another two with another set of problems. Then two people observing all the people with problems. Then some other things got thrown in and the entire thing didn't even go where I wanted it to go. It became a mess, so it's sitting in a box. If it was difficult for me to let loose of them, then I guess rewriting several times wouldn't be a problem. Since they're imagination stuff and not persuation or facts that people need to know to raise children well or to stop environmental destruction, I'm not very heavily invested in them. I probably would be if I developed the characters more. Take care.

But isn't it difficult to let lose of them once you are finished?

ha turn all the extraneous stuff into other things that are related to what you've already written.

Yeah, just as I hit the post square, I thought of a way to do just that. Thanks and take care.

I'm sure that professional writers go through this all the time. If you do not feel comfortable making two stories at once then do one and do the other one at another time you know. Do whatever you feel is comfortable as a writer

This is working out better than I thought. Probably because the stories and characters are nothing alike.

Enjoy! Are you writing for yourself or a site? Most often I don't have good dreams. They are bizarre and out of line with reality. Good luck with both stories.

Just for me. For years people have said to write down your dreams and for years, I couldn't remember any. Now with menopause and constantly getting up in the middle of the night, it's easy!

I have a folder on my computer where I put the ideas for stories. Because of my wrist, I cannot hand write for more then 10 minutes at a time so have to use the computer. I did start one novel, got i;t down to the sixth draft, and then got the idea of another novel. I also had some fan fiction that I was writing, but it is not that easy especially when you have to do everything else. I also have trouble with extraneous stuff, but when you get to the sixth draft, it will all disappear.I wish I could have more time but then I would have to worry about money and my backside spreading out a bit more.

Maybe I should get Dragon. Hopes it works with Macs. Besides there will not be anyone thinking weird about me because I do talk to myself a lot. It would save me from sitting down and spreading my seat when I should be working.

Thank you very much for the words of encouragement. 6th draft, huh. We'll see. I'm thinking about getting dragon writing so I can say it and the computer will write it for me. Whatever I do with my hands, I have to switch to every other day.

I'm not sure if there is a mac version or not. I've heard that someday, all the computers may have that as a feature. My husband's computer came with a read it to me feature. That's for blind, low vision and LD for reading people.

you have to strike while the iron is hot - meaning you have to write when the inspiration hits.

Concur...fully, m'dear! I find a lot of times, when I get bogged down..giving the project a rest, allows me time to re-align my thoughts, sometimes change directions, and a new spin on things, gives me renewed vim and vigor. Haven't done any writing, this new year...just seem to be in a writer's block. And, realistically only did one piece of worth in 2010, and that was on the effects of sonar on dolphins and whales. Must find some subjects to invigorate me, this year! Take care...and Cheers!

Sounds like an interesting topic. Nice to hear from you again pergammano! In this case, I'm writing based on dreams (my imagination), so I have to go back and dream some more. The bogged down is mostly my logical mind trying to get all factual in the middle of a fantacy piece, One doesn't really go too well with the other sometimes.

That is why I have never finished a long one..lol..I start writing one and then I get another on my mind..then I start it too. It's hard when you have a lot of great ideas. I bet it's hard to keep up with them both at once.

Actually, it's not too bad. They're both fun and I can't wait to see what my sub-conscious dreams up next. I had one that was terrific, a long time ago that I never finished. I had so many layers of some many things and so many characters that I got lost. But these two stories are simpler. I'm not trying to right all the wrongs of society, just have one goal for each one. They do other things along the way, but one main goal. Like one is trying to find and use powers. The other is two sisters trying to find treasure.

Maybe there is a way for you to combine the two. Are you working on a collection of short stories or do you want to develop each into a book? You shouldn't get too caught up in the "extraneous stuff." Just write and you can clean it up later. The important thing is to have a map for yourself of a clear beginning middle and end for each story. Then you can go back and decide what details are important to include along the way.

A break is always refreshing, or so I've found. It's even true in working math! If I get bogged down and walk away to do something totally different then come back it's all fresh and comes much easier. I find the same thing with writing. When you go back it should flow a lot easier!
