Is it ill-advisable to just close the monitor of your laptop when you're done using it? I have this lazy habit of doing that especially when I feel sleepy. I don't even shut down the computer nor close all the programs that were running.

No friend it is not advisable at all.. It will put unnecessary pressure on the processor...and loos of energy But if you are downloading something or given some work to do and you don't required to monitor that ...then it is advisable to turn off the monitor...it will reduce pressure from the monitor and also save energy happy mylotting....

It just wastes your electricity. And are there other people in your house who use your laptop?? If yes, I will say no, it is not advisable to do so, as someone useing that laptop can mess around with your works. But if you are alone, well thats up to you, as it just raises electricity bill. Well maybe you can try to change the habit into stand by or hibernating it, which will save some bills. Happy MyLotting :).

I am one who barely ever shuts down my computer as I have all 3 pc's in my home networked to a server. I do have a sleep mode so it will hibernate and not actually shut down. If you prefer as me to leave it on then go to your settings and set it to hibernate as opposed to shutting it down. I do from time to time restart to give it a refresh but never actually shut it down as at times I do log in to my computer from outside computers so I need to have it on in order to do so. Best of luck to you.

I use my laptop mostly for surfing and accessing my social network sites so I guess it's better for me to shut it down instead setting it to hibernate. Thanks.

Hi josesl, yes setting it hibernate certainly saves on energy and lifetime of the monitor. I do see you are new to myLot so a very warm welcome to you.

But its still better setting it to hibernate automatically at the amount of time you want if it is idle than letting it turned on all the day long, right?? If you want to do it, you can just set it(works for Windows XP, I don't really know the others, though) from Start menu--control panel--On the left tab, switch to classic view--then go to power options--go to hibernate tab--enable hibernation--go back to power schemes-- and set system hibernates time. Or also you can set it to stand by instead, which still eats a little electricity. You must probably now this already if you have used your computer for a long time :). Happy MyLotting :).

I'm grateful for your advice. Saving energy is really important.

I too have this terrible habit and what happens every couple of days, is that my netbook will just freeze and I then have to restart it.

Actually, sometimes it happens to my PC too. Especially when I just let the computer run throughout the day, it will hangs more often, and if a restart my computer, it will be refreshed and runs faster. Happy MyLotting :).

You should shut it down. You don't just help the planet save energy, you are also saving yourself from the harmful effects that an active computer might have caused to your health. I always shut it down whenever I'm done using it. To save energy and give the computer time to rest. I believe by doing that, my computer will live longer. :D

I to sometimes get so tired that I just want to leave the computer running and not shut it down. I rarely ever leave it on while I am sleeping though. It can make the fan burn out. My ex father in law had that happen a few times because he leaves his computer running day and night and never shuts it down. I prefer to save electricity so I shut my computer down while I am sleeping. My computer runs from about 8am - 11pm or later. I think its good for it to get rebooted each morning to help it run faster.

So that's probably why I've noticed a change in the speed. I was thinking it had something to do with my laptop getting old.

I usually, just put my computer in sleep mode rather than doing a full shut down. This way, power is conserved and it doesn't take any time. I think it does basically the same thing as shutting the top of the laptop, but not really sure.

I'm pretty sure my processor is still running when I go in sleep mode because every morning when I check, my points went up in 20$2surf and that only happens when it is running. I don't like dealing with shutting down the machine because it takes much longer to get it started again. I just hope that doesn't do any damage.

Apparently it's not the same. I thought of the same thing but as I understood it, the processor is still running.

It's not advisable to do that. I always shut it down properly. What if your battery runs out if you're not plugged into AC, everything unsaved will be gone or even Windows can be corrupted? Very troublesome if that happens.

Well, of course there are many other possibilities & scenarios but I don't think any one of them are beneficial, like others have mentioned

I have heard that running your computer overnight like I see so many people do is hard on the computer and is in no way a savings in electricity. I also hear that using the hibernate stage on your computer is a savings and it keeps all your programs so you can go right back to them. But only if you aren't going to be away from the PC for long. So if you can afford to buy a new computer and do not want to economize then your'e fine. hehe

There are several things that make a computer slow besides just age. Do you do good maintenance on it? And do you have a good security on it? These too things make it run longer and faster.

Like they said it is not advisable to do that. Simply because it might corrupt the OS. I could just imagine you just let the battery run out, so that is like pulling the plug. This corrupts the system.

Ouch! Your laptop easily in trouble if that the case. If you didn't close any particular browser. It is easily infected by viruses or any other internet trouble. Another case also will be damage your laptop lcd or monitor due to excessive exposure. The battery also easily drain and many more that possibly your laptop damage easily

Don't feel bad, I do the same exact thing once in a while. I stay on the computer so long that I don't even have energy to press the shut down power nor close the programs, even though I do try to avoid doing it often. But you're right it doesn't kind of become a habit, it's different when it's a desk top computer, you kind of feel obligated to have to shut it down.

It's funny and ridiculous but ijust found myself doing the sqmeexact thing tonight, I closed the computer without shutting it down, like if it was automatic. Now is when I noticed since I am no longer in my computer Bit in iPad instead.

I always shut down my desk computer and my laptop if I am not going to be using them for several hours and overnight. I never just shut the lid on my laptop. It will go into sleep mode, but I think it's not good to trap in the heat between the screen and the keyboard. To leave any computer on, wastes power and may cause a fire. I know that not everyone things this, and I could be wrong, but I never take chances with such expensive uquipment. _Derek

I don't think that it's a bad thing to shut it down. I personally don't turn it completely off. I find that it's easier not to turn it completely off.

You should shut it down. If you do so, your computer may be suffered great damage. The computer will be broken even it is the best. And, you'd better don't use it when you are sleepy or on the bed.

No. This is not advisable at all, it gives more work for the processor to do - as it still has to maintain the system, just turn off the display. As well as this, by closing the lid, you're effectively using the OEM's way of turning the display off, then executing the standby.exe, which is not very healthy for your display, either. Shutting down is win :)

I never knew it would affect a lot of the laptop's functions by just closing the lid. It's not only a lazy habit, but a really bad one.

It doesn't do any bad to close it. The exact effect will depend on your energy settings. You may have it set up to hibernate on close, suspend, power off or do nothing. It depends on what you are doing with it and if you want to leave it doing some work all the night. If suspended, hibernated or powered off, closing the screen it's just a shortcut of powering it off the classical way, the effect is the same but you don't get a chance to save any changes on open programs. If simply set to "do nothing" when closing the screen, the computer remains on all the night. To give you an idea, on a desktop it equals to power off the screen and leave it, working all the night. You may choose this if you want to leave it downloading something the whole night for example (and in those cases, closing the screen is better than simply leave it open). The bottom line is, it does not harm you in any way, computers are ready to remain powered on for entire weeks without any trouble, a night doesn't do any bad. But if you're paranoid on energy consumition and don't have anything important to leave your computer working, turn it off the normal way.

Hi. Now this is a new one. Almost all responses told me that it would damage my laptop. Actually, someone has told me a little bit similar to what you just said. That's why I just close the lid. But another friend of mine recently told me that it's not a good thing to do. That's why I posted this topic to find out people's opinions on this matter.

I thought when I just close the laptop's monitor, it kinda automatically puts it in a sleep mode. Haha. I'm not really good with computers :)
