Snow Cream & Other Rare Treats!

Do you have something you eat, use, or drink only when Nature provides it? I have a few, chief among them wild blackberries, &, most wonderful of all, snow cream! My maternal grandparents had a farm in NW Louisiana on which the world's sweetest & biggest blackberries grew. Every Summer, "Mama," my grandmother, & I would take 2 buckets each into those wild thickets, & gather so many they were heavy to return to our big old kitchen, where I'd gobble up some with whole milk (butter scraped off the top), or try not to go crazy from the smell of her backing blackberry cobbler or pie. Oh, YUM! But blackberries--except when there was a drought--were an annual joy, whereas, in Louisiana, snow happened maybe twice when I was a girl, & only once did it actually stick for more than a couple of hours. Most times, though, it nearly all melted before it even hit the ground. But those rare times, my grandmother would collect the snow (away from the road or the eaves, so it would be pure), & turn it into that rarest of treats: snow cream. It was simple enough to make, but you must have snow. Crushed ice just doesn't taste the same! If all we had was milk, we'd use that, but pure cream was best. Then you just stir in some sugar & a flavor, vanilla or banana, or lemon, say...maybe add a bit of fruit, & voila! Magic! I'm convinced snow fairies & unicorns live on the stuff! And yes, I had some snow cream today. Elic gathered the snow, the pure white, sparkly snow, & handed me the rest of the makings. It only snows here in Austin, Texas about every 12 years or so, so I'm--as the Brits say--chuffed! Maggiepie "You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

What a wonderful treat. If we must have snow, we must make some fun from it. I hope you enjoyed it thoroughly.

Every. Single. Brrcold. Yummy. Bite! I'd share, but the internet's too hot; I'm sure it'd melt! Anyway, I only had one serving, but it was good enough to last me 'til next time...12 years from now! Ok that's a new one on me. I remember visiting my brother in Washington state during cherry season and we went and picked cherries. We also have this grower's area near us, apple hill, that we go visit every year and pick fresh apples, etc.

I was raised in Idaho and Utah where it snows every year but I never tasted or heard of snowcream till 65 when I moved to Tenn. and my motherin law made some and it was good didnt haeve fruit to put in i of cream for they used the cream for butter. AND I wonder why no one in the west evr thought of this lolol but we used to make home made icecream turning that handle reall got to be alot o work but it was so yummy when it was done. Nothng really grew wild in Idaho no berrys or such but I would go out int he spring and find my aspargrass. Or find choke cherry trees to get hose little feller to mack jelly. In Tenn we would find currents, some blackberrys

Yeah, she wanted me to make it... So, I brought her the can of milk, the sugar and then the snow. "You want me to make it?" she asked. "I've never done it," I replied. turned out neither had she!

Good morning Maggie, i know u enjoyed that cream. I thought about making some myself yesterday because we got a new snow & it would have been perfect for snow cream. My grandmother always made snow cream when we were kids & i loved it.I made some last year but haven't this year yet.As for good ol' blackberries my 'bigmama' could make the best cobbler i ever tasted. I use to take my other grand out riding around to hunt elderberries. She loved making jelly out of them & it was good. Have u ever had elderberry jelly? Hope u have a great day.
