Crash into Me

That's actually a song (one I never liked), but in this case I'm talking about computers that crashed. I have been off of mylot for two weeks because my computer crashed. I had limited access to my parent's computer (limited because every time I was there, I mostly was dealing with my mother, who is getting progressively worse), so I have had little contact with anyone or anything online. I ended up with about 1,800 e-mails, a heck of a lot of them were from mylot, gather, and a bunch of survey sites. Thankfully, I have a friend who will fix my computer for free, and found away to fix it instead of me having to come up with money for a new computer. And for a while, that was what I thought I was going to end up having to do. This guy is a blessing because I think we all know that computer technicians charge 'an arm and a leg' to fix these things. Has your ocmputer ever crashed? Did you have to get an new motherboard? A whole new computer? What has been your biggest computer disaster?

am so new to the computer world, I've only had two crashes. The first one happened in 2008, it was a computer a friend of ours had built for us in 2005. It crashed around the end of May and I was without a computer for about 5-6 months when a friend I found on MySpace offered me her extra window 98..Yeah it was a dinosaur, but I was able to get online even though it was slow and I had no sound. (The no sound really killed me, you know how I love music) She lived a couple hours away, so we met half way and not only did I get a computer, but got to meet my friend in person..:D Then Jan 2009 the windows 98 crashed, and I was without a computer for about 12-13 months and could only get on at the library. Then in Feb or Mar of last year, my husband gave this guy both of our crashed computers because he builds them and resells them and he built one for us for free..:D I want to purchase a laptop from this guy if I can, in appreciation of him doing this and so my husband doesn't get online as I am trying to do my school work..

I remember when you had to use the library computer. That was pretty frustrating, huh.

Thanks for the BR, I hope your friend is able to get your computer fixed up, not having a home computer really stinks...

Hooray for you Ambie! It is always a joy not to have to shell out so much money when the one at home could be fixed. I have not personally but I am good with computers and have fixed several friends and family members their pc's also. I have have this ex-sister inlaw who will only call me when her computer is on the brink. I have had to install a whole new motherboard, a whole new DVD drive and have had to clean out viruses about 10 times. What will she do next. I hope I am not jinxing it as I know she will call me soon. Computer techs by me run at $150 -$200 per hour or they can charge one flat fee which will almost equate to the hourly rate. Hope you are fully up and running soon.

I was trying to put a there, as I was excited for you. I guess my posting was way more excited as that devil, grin was for my sister in law who only calls me for her computer pc and not to see how I am doing. LOL

I was wondering about you, sorry to hear about your computer problems. Thankfully my hubby knows quite a lot about computers, he works with them, and usually has to fix all these various problems at work, like computers crashing or stuff like that. So when mine has a problem he can easily fix it. He starts by trying to restore it, and generally that works. However.. since I'm so old fashioned and refuse to upgrade to newer models as often as he'd like.. if it needed more than just a restoration, he'd probably convince me to get a new computer instead of just buying some new parts for it. But he's like that, anything other than the latest and greatest isn't good enough for him, LOL.

Wow, that's a lot of emails! Yes, I've had my share of computer disasters. From time to time we have to get new computers. When this one passes away, I think I will get a lap-top, much easier to carry around when it needs repairs. Glad you found a way to get yours fixed!

I had a major crash back in 2005 or 06 and lost all my pictures, data, etc. and I had no backup. I eventually bought a Dell desktop (I don't like laptops, even though I have one) with dual drives. I also bought an external hard drive for backup and I backup my stuff to disk (when I remember). I had an infection earlier this year, but we got it cleaned up. I had someone do it and it only cost $100. I'm glad you're back online and plugging away at those e-mails.

I have had a lot of issues with my first laptop. It actually developed a problem with the plug, because it got struck by lightening. We did finally find someone who helped us a lot, for a reasonable price. I do have a new laptop now. My desk top is old, but my son put in new memory for me, which I paid for with online earnings. I have been attacked by some spyware that could have done me in, but my son was able to defeat it and remove it. A lot of people got a virus on Gather earlier this year.

I've been pretty lucky that most of my problems have been fixable, but once I got hijacked and finally had to have my hard drive wiped and taken back pretty much to shop.

I am still in prayer mode, for you and yours! Yes, I think that I have already related that my computer crashed early last June, and I did NOT have back-up for my account billings, so had a difficult time billing all my clients, as I basically had to rely on my "not so good" memory as to when I had performed the contract services! The worst part, was the monetary decision...my property taxes, over $3000.00 were due at the end of June, too! A new computer...nearly 2000.00, there was consternation as I knew I would truly miss..all you at myLot...but it was MORE important that I had a roof over my head. Late September, when I financially saw my way clear (sorta) of having a technician come to the Island...it was over $1100.00...but cheaper than a new computer! Now, I need a new "hard drive", so I am going to get two...one for back-up...as my son can get them wholesale for about $60.00 each! Will seriously set me free from "computer worry!" I am sure that it cost me quite a bit of money with clients, too! One lady whom lives in Toronto, Ontario, called me and said...We haven't received a bill, even tho' I know you took good care of our property! That was about $690.00! Nice to know there are honest people! Ambie, I wish I could send you a bundle of strength to get thru this time...all my heartfelt sympathy! Take care!

Thanks for the prayers. I had no idea that a few hours after posting this discussion, my world would seemingly fall to pieces. Dramatic to day that? Probably. But I just feel heartsick. I do remember when you were off mylot for a long time. I worried about you.

Twice I have had to get a motherboard. But because of shipping they get jiggled and it destroys the part....so it was thankfully covered because the computer was new. I did have my crash because of a virus...twice and you are right. They charge an arm and leg to repair it. Glad you are back!

Wow! Does anyone do back-ups? I use Acronis. I crashed one time due to a corrupt download. Ten minutes later, I was back up, all files and data intact, due to Acronis. I love my Acronis.

My computer crashed, but my friend retrieved all of the information I had had in the computer. So I didn't lose anything.
