No..I am NOT talking about the time change (for some of us) next Saturday nite! I am talking about those horrible pests that invade our beloved pets that create such horrible diseases as Lyme, Q fever, Colorado Tick Fever, and a host of other debilitating diseases! CAUTION..BEWARE! I have already found TWO on my dog, Brui...and it took me by surprise, it seems early and FAR TOO cold--but NOT so! These blood feeding parasites usually live in long grass, wooded and forested regions..and deer are the primary host! Ticks detect a host (interestingly) by emitted heat from the body, or carbon dioxide, and they are second only to the mosquito for spreading disease! NOW, with longer days, and a change in temp is the perfect environment for them! How do you remove ticks? All the methods that I have been taught (some even from Ambulance training) are incorrect! MyLot's "search the web" under Ticks, reference; www.emedicinehealth.com/ticks has a good article on proper removal! Have you found any in your area yet...or have you even thot to look?

Hello Pergammano, Ticks are our worse enemies. Here they spread the disease called Babesiosis which, if not treated in time, can be lethal. I always said it is better to prevent than to treat. Against fleas I use natural remedies as fleas don't put my dog's life in danger. But with ticks I don't want to take any risk. That's why as soon as the weather becomes warmer (now here are minus 8 degrees celsius! ) I'll apply a good tick repelent product (as Advantix or Frontline or other similar ones). Also, whenever we come back from the woods (we are lucky to have a lot of woods surrounding our little town ) I double check Binne's coat to remove the ticks that still walk on her in search for a place to bite. If any bit Binne, I take a piece of tissue with alchool and I keep it pressed on top of the tick until it gets dizzy. Then I remove it slowly with the tweezers, making sure I removed the whole beast and its head didn't remain under the skin.

Good morning, Inu1711....Surprise, surprise...my dog, Brui, is up-to-date with all of his FLEA treatments, which supposedly includes TICK treatment, and was administered by our Local Vet, at a Clinic two weeks ago! Being annoyed at finding the Ticks, after treatment...I did a little research, and they are (Tick's, that is) are building up quite an immunity to all that we are currently using as prevention! SOOO, you are so right...good, good grooming is really the best prevention. WE have NEVER had Ticks, before, when every morning there is frost on the ground...so they are evolving in other ways, too! YES, I cannot keep my animals, out of the Forest, I have 3 acres..and 60% of it is Forested...and We have a kazillion deer as hosts for these parasites! Your method of removal is very good...two things the article mentions is to wear rubber gloves, in case it breaks...and provide lots of aftercare. Take care..and Cheers!

Well, this is not good news at all! A friend of mine had her dog infected with Babesiosis last year, in February. He received the proper treatment and he survived. He also had had applied the pipette, but with no use. So maybe you're right, the nasty creatures developed some kind of immunity to all those products. Then why should we still poison our dogs with those chemicals? I thought only the products that are sold in my country were bad, and I used to buy them on-line, from West-European countries, but I'm not sure if they bring any help. As you said, all that we have in our fight against ticks is grooming, grooming and grooming!

Ugh, don't remind me, of either tick.....No, I think it is still too cold for ticks and the best way to remove them for me is, "Honey, there's a tick on Penny/Ciara!" Yeah, I don't like messing with ticks if they are embedded. Now if the tick has just jumped on my dog and has not gotten a hold, I will just pull it off, but once embedded, I am afraid that I wouldn't get it all..

TRULY...TRULY..SORRY! Those words came out all wrong..should pay more attention to what I am saying. I do know (from your discussions) what a diligent/loving "dog" lady you are...Please accept my apologies! YES..those were TWO things I was trying to make a point of; Living here for 31 years, I have never found TICKS under the envinronmental conditions that we have, right now, and secondly I had just had "Brui" treated by the Vet, for all immunization updates, and a Flea/Tick injection, two weeks previous...to no avail. Once again, I apologize!

Good morning..dear Lady...A REAL SHOCKER! I have been around the block a few times myself....and NEVER, EVER had I found/seen Ticks under the weather conditions that we have here right NOW! Freezing/Frost every night...barely above freezing during the day...NOT TICK weather, or so I thought. The reason for the post, is I did NOT want other's to fall under my false perceptions, that we need Spring and balmier weather for these parasites to be attacking! I know you are an extremely busy Lady...but for us with Pets, the emedicine article is truly basic and worthwhile! I thought I was quite versatile/knowledgable when it came to these nasties...but truly did not know how important...after care/follow up is! I hate them, probably paranoid..but they are a reality here...JUST NOT now! Please note, TOO... I had just had him treated for Fleas/Ticks..two weeks ago! Take care ... and Cheers!

Um, what do you mean by, "but for us with Pets?" I not only have two dogs, but I dog sit as well and I know none of the dogs here have ticks. Maybe it is the environment, but I am not someone who is too busy and has no dogs to deal with. I am sorry your dog got these ticks, I don't think the flea/tick treatments work well on ticks because my daughter gets one of the most expensive treatments for her dog, (she is a groomer and must keep her dog up to date on shots and invest in the best flea and tick drops since her dog is around so many other dogs) and she found a couple ticks on her dog..

The main reason for posting this discussion...was/is I AM IN TOTAL shock to be finding them, right now...when EVERY single night, it is freezing, white frost everywhere...and have NEVER experienced them under these conditions before. So, I just wanted to let people KNOW, they are around...and maybe have changed their environment, attack mode, as well. I hate them, and it has been found, some in this area carry Lyme's disease. WE HAVE FAR TOO many deer, which are their main host here! BIG HUGZ ...and LUV!

YES, my dear...that was the shocker, the weather, so cold...just has never happened here, to my recollection, like this. I had had "Brui" and "Curlew" (my cat) to the Vet (and she is lovely, Dr. Jehran)and had their Flea/Tick treatment, so obviously..those aren't working anymore! Seems like thousands of years ago, but my Dad took in a Malamute Husky, that had been so mistreated, that no-one could touch it. We could see a sore forming on it's forehead...we had the Vet in, he tranquilized it..and it was a tick! I will never forget that horrible sore...SO,yes, I am so thrilled to have found those early on Brui! Have a good one...LUV & HUGZ

oh my. i look at coco all the time to see if she has fleas or anything on her as she has a tendency to get allergies and break out in red patches at times. which she scratches and im afraid of infection. when we lived in florida i had to give her a monthly pill for fleas and such because she often got fleas there. now here in az, ive heard and noticed that fleas and ticks dont seem to be bad at all and she hasnt had either ever since we've been here.

That truly is a bonus, bunnybon! They are such obnoxious, invasive nasties, I wish I would some-day move to an area, like Az., where they are virtually non-existent. I have had them on me before, and they inject a "freezing" as they imbed themselves...and you just don't feel them! I grew up in Central B.C., and there they would down animals like Bull Moose. Didn't think about it, till now...I am wondering if they will infect my sheep, and how I will find them on all his wool? I don't want to shear him yet, as the weather is still tooo cold, but the deer are always in his pasture. Egads..I better get on to that! Funny how a discussion will get you running off in another direction...gotta do that today. Hope all is well with you, take care..and have a wonderful day!

There we go, you are right..myLot rules! Wish I could post the hilarity of attempting to check my big, woolly sheep, "Rambo" for Ticks! He is very cuddly, and attention seeking...but, I think he has a dose of "spring fever" and I was definitely the object of his "bunting" yesterday! He is BIG enough to hurt, BUTT he didn't...but with his sense of wanting to play..I didn't get my job done well! Take care..and Cheers!

Oh my no...not yet. Those nasty little devils are quite common here in the summer and they are a huge concern for spreading illness. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is one that we worry over. Last year I went fishing with my b/f and was preactically run off by the ticks. There were so many that you could see them crawling up to you on the ground!!! We got out of there quick. I don't think our winters have been cold enough to kill them for a while though. I think this one will have an effect on them though..at least I am hoping.

AH...Jen, one of my points exactly. I had been lulled into a false security, as this WAS/IS the coldest winter HERE on record...SO, aligning with your thinking, I was of the same....and hence MY SURPRISE to find TICKS..now! I regularly schedule my pets for the second week of Feb., for all immunizations, boosters...etc., and had just had them done...another FALSE security! I know what a busy lady, you are...BUT I really wish you could take time to read the article in the link, that I posted. I have been exposed to TICKS all my life, living in areas (CentralB.C.) where they would kill Bull Moose. I learned (old dog-new tricks) lots from that article...especially about follow-up care, handling ticks, and disposing. P.S. I will send you all sorts of links, and even mail you anything you want for your daughter's project! Rude awakening this morning at 2:30, we have Provincial Emergency Program, and our neighborhood foreman called, as I am to be (and others)to accept evacuees from waterfront homes...as the Tsunami is to hit in about 47 minutes. I am HIGH & DRY, far enough from the waterfront..to not be in jeopardy, therefore we are asked to offer shelter. Got 3 pots of Coffee made already..and fire blazing. Oops, here comes some-one. HUGZ!

Good morning, innocents! What shocked me, is that I have lived in the same area, same home...same environmental conditions...EXCEPT this year, we set all kinds of COLD temperatures..and it is NOT even mild NOW! Usually when we get the first balmy days of spring, is when the TICK alert is on! We have a plethora of deer here, and they are one of the biggest hosts for ticks! Welcome to myLot...and have a great day!

we do have some ticks on deer and other animals here as well and I have always found it strange that i have only ever found the one tick before. It is strange finding them this time of year while its still cold though that is for sure

our deer population is down a great deal form what it normally is here hunting season was a complete bust for most people. I do manual checks on my animals for flea and ticks and if they have them i'll use natural treatments rather then the stuff the vets give you as thats a pesticide that go's directly into there blood stream and the few and i mean very few tests that have been done to test for long term effects of that stuff do not show promising outcomes

I have not found them on my cats. My black cat seems to repel pests, but she does not let me check her either. My light colored cats get flea combed every day. I think I would find a tick. They actually get combed every time they get up in my lap. I think they like it. I had tried flea and tick treatments for their fleas and they just did not work. I am pleased to say the combing does, then I dispose of the eggs and larvae.

That is for sure...that was one of my points, I had just had (2 weeks b4) my little friends treated by the Vet...so you are spot on..GROOMING seems to be the best answer. One thing I did learn on the "emedicine" link is that we should be doing this grooming with disposable gloves, in case we break the body of an imbedded tick, as some diseases are in the body fluids! By what I am seeing, I am thinking we are facing an epidemic here, and the vector..DEER which has totally overpopulated the Island, to where they are all becoming sickly..the perfect host for ticks! I truly will have to be a more vigilant groomer. Take care,GG!

I occasionally find a tick on Lucy and can successfully remove it in total, there doesn't seem to be a particular time for them and she hasn't had one for a few years now.. The problem we are having in our district at the moment, and for the last couple of months is FLEAS. I've spoken to many people and the conventional and expensive treatments are ineffective. I've been doing my pup with dog shampoo and killing dozens but they are back again within two days. I was even dipping her in sheep dip every 3 days but this did not work either. It's driving us all to distraction. We seem to have a minor mouse plague at the moment too. (Can a mouse plague be minor?)

WELL...surprise, my dear friend, you are a heck of a lot more of a computer guru than I am...I do NOT know how to cut and paste. My son has hurried me thru the proceedure..so many times. But these kids are so used to doing it, it's just one speedy proceedure for him...while I am going..."Wait, slow down, what did you do?" DUH!!! One of these days! Gosh, you must remember the TICK scare in the interior? I am sure there were lots in Summerland/Penticton as we sure had lots in the Chilcotin. Right now, and for the past coupla years, our deer population is multiplying like rabbits..and here they are the vector. As I said elsewhere, there's hardly a time they are not on my property. Now, I am worried about my Ram! Have you had any relief from you Bi-Pap, or any consultation! It rained like craxy here this morning..and now the sun is shining beautifully. I have a really long-time friend (childhood) that is living in Vermillion, and planning a trip there before too long...you will have to PM me and I will see if I can cross your path! Hope your day is spectacular..LUV ya!

OMG...what is the vector of their transportation there? I am just amazed that you have so many..! I know here, it is that we have an overwhelming population of DEER, I mean overwhelming...and they are the hosts, here! At any given point, on my 3 acres, there is 5 to 10 of them laying under trees...favourite spot is the Lilac bush...and in the pasture with my Sheep. Have a great day!

Oooow, Dear ticks, deer ticks spred lyme disease here. Probably what is the vector here. We have deer, too. I wonder if wild turkeys, raccoons, and foxes help the spred, but we have lots and lots of tame animals, too.

YES..Lyme disease made it's way to the Gulf Islands, about 10 years ago, and there was NO Dr., appraised of it...lives were lost, and lives have been truly compromised, by lack of antiobiotic treatment in early stages. We had a Dr., here on the Island, Dr. Bill Gain, God rest his soul, whom many years ago, in his retirement began an indepth study of TICKS! He warned of the onslaught of Lyme, Colorado Tick Fever, and a host of other diseases. He had the entire Island, bringing ticks to him, of course, in pill bottles. His work was nowhere finished when he passed...and he even predicted that some of the cases of JRA that we have were misdiagnosed tick diseases! STILL, with the influx of a myriad of species of Ticks, those affected are still sent to a clinic in Loma Linda, California. Go figure!

My dogs don't get ticks because I treat them each month with tick and flea repellent. It's the kind that you apply along their back and neck. They hate it but it's over quickly and lasts all month. I also give them heartworm medicine to prevent that disease. Bugs can live in extreme conditions so I do this year-round. You never know where they might find a warm place to hide and attack your beloved animal!

BOYOH BOY! I hear you loud and clear, dragon...but I had just taken my JRT, "Brui" and my cat "Curlew" to the Vet, two weeks ago, for all their up-dates, and precautionary Flea/Tick treatment...so that was part of my surprise! Actually thought I was going to find little sores..NOPE..TICKS! In the back of my mind, I didn't think it was possible due to recent treatments and the Weather. I think they may have evolved (Ticks that is)where they are becoming immune to our treatments...and we will have to revert to diligent grooming. What I am saying, I was lulled into a false security! Sure will be diligent..NOW! Take care..and Have a stupendous day!

My goodness...dragon, you have me confused as the DICKENS! I use them both! I have a recipe that I have shared with many, here for doggie/kitty treats with a hearty dose of garlic in them...and here's the kicker, the Recipe, was written and posted in a newspaper, by a Vet from Nanaimo, B.C.----he was the head vet for the SPCA, and used it for treatment/deterent in the kennels. I have used this recipe, and it seems forever, with all my pets! My last two dogs, passed 2 and 3 years ago, respectively, both lived to 14+, according to breed, shud have been 10+! NOW, you have me re-thinking, and I will have to go on a Mega-search regarding Garlic. One of my favs for me, too! My "apple cart" is upset...LOL!

Wow, that's a scary thought! I have also heard that garlic works and dogs love it but recently there have been warnings that garlic is bad for them. One summer I gave Gus and Cookie brewer's yeast and that kept the fleas and ticks away. Maybe I'll go back to that. They both think that brewer's yeast pills are tasty treats!

I learned the proper way to remove ticks awhile ago. I had to drill it into my hubby's thick head, though. He insisted that burning them off was the proper way. I THINK he understands now. I always keep an eye out for those tiny nasties. My little girl, Lilly, was recently diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Thankfully, it was just a "slight positive" so, hopefully, she won't have much of a problem with the symptoms associated with it. She's already had her Lyme Disease vaccination for this year and I will NEVER let that slide for even a week. When her next shot is due, she'll be at the vet's getting that shot! (That will prevent her from becoming "re-infected", as the vet put it, and having a more serious case of Lyme.) I found a tick on me a few years ago. Hmmm, that was right before we moved here... to the COUNTRY... go figure. I had to see my doctor who gave me a preventative course of antibiotics, just in case, since it was a deer tick that was on me. Yep, I know they are something we should constantly watch out for. I've been checking myself recently, each time I come inside from working in the garden when the temps go up enough for me to work in the garden. I still take precautions, like tucking my pants inside my socks and making sure there are none in my hair or crawling around on my body anywhere. Blech!!! They are such CREEPY bugs!!!!!

So nice to hear from you, Marti! I was just really, really shocked at finding them in this kind of weather. Usually, here, they are much more prolific in balmier weather...and longer days. We have an unusually HUGE population of DEER, these past few seasons...and they are their vehicle of choice here..so it stands to reason we would have many more...but in freezing weather. YES, I am always on top of treatment, and had just had both "Brui" and "Curlew" to the Vet...for all updates..and Flea/tick immunizations, so it was another surprise to find them...Deterents seem to have lost their effect..so good grooming seems the only answer. REcently, we have had several cases of Lyme Disease in the area, all misdiagnosed, and several persons have gone to a Clinic in California, that seems to have a handle on "a cure!" YES, we are advised, if one found on us, to put it in a container, and take it to the Dr., when we go for antibiotic treatments! Sure seem to be a lot more than when I moved here 31 years ago. Glad to hear Lily is well. Take care, dear one!
