Jasper Fforde - with his new book - yes, I got it signed!

Back in January, I think I mentioned one of my favorite writers and went to his web site to give a link. Well, I found a place on his site about book signings, and wondered how close he might come to Austin and scrolled thru it. Imagine my surprise to discover he wasn't coming NEAR Austin, he was coming TO Austin! I whipped out my phone and put the day in the phone to remind me. So, for the last 2 days I've been getting reminders about his visit! And TODAY was the BIG DAY! So, while I almost NEVER go downtown, I drove downtown to the bookstore to see him! Now, he's not for everyone, but I think he's GREAT! If you can stand a little mental exercise, then look up Jasper Fforde's books. Probably best to start with the first one, tho, The Eyre Affair.

I'm always looking for good books since I read faster than my favorite authors can write. What genre does he write in? (Or is it a she, cause you can't always tell by their pen name.)

Good answer BarBaraPrz! I included a picture so you could see he is a he. and its hard to say exactly what he writes, but I've seen him in Science Fiction, I've seen him in literature, and he was introduced by the Mystery section head at the book store...

I love sci fi so I will have to look up some of his books. After I posted my comment I saw the picture soo, yes, I felt a little foolish. However I usually post to discussions from my email so I don't get to see the add ons until the page loads with my comment. Sometimes, I look at the discussion first before I post but mostly I answer the interesting ones straight away.

Personally I have never heard of him. What type of books does he write? This is exciting that you went and seen him and got his autograph. Quite some years back I went and met Debbie Macomber and got her Autograph, and picture taken with her, and for some time the picture was on her website even. She is actually now a local author as she lives not too far from me, as does Ann Rule and I know maybe one of these days I should consider making it to one of their book signings for sure.

They are really hard to describe. He actually made a joke about it at the talk/signing. One young girl there says she describes it as "The Phantom Tollbooth" for adults. Mind you, since I read "The Phantom Tollbooth" back when it first came out, as an adult, I don't really remember much about it now...

You've really got to love when lucky stuff like that happens. I love it when people I really want to see all of a sudden pop up somewhere where I am going to be. This has happened to me in my hometown, but it's also happened to me when I've planned trips to other towns. Though not an author, one of my best friends, whom I never get to see because of the distance, was going to be in Arizona, at the same time as I was going to be in Arizona, and we ran into each other at a coffee shop! LOL I love it when that happens.

That's exciting! I haven't been to too many book signings myself. I went to one with Peter S. Beagle (author of the Last Unicorn) and I got a few books autographed by him. My autographed copy of the Last Unicorn is in a vault. lol Not really, but if I had one then I would put in it one. It's very precious to me. It's one of my all-time favorite books (I have THREE copies) and it's been signed by the author! You're making me want to look and see if any of my favorite authors are coming to town so I can go to another book signing.

Oh my, I liked that book too, I've had it FOR-EV-VER! I have actually met most of the authors at science fiction conventions, but this isn't the first time I've gone down to BookPeople for a signing, tho I didn't put phone alerts in for the last one!

I believe the forever part. That sounds like fun! I should see if there's a fantasy fiction convention coming to my town (there probably is... I'm just not paying enough attention. lol). I'd really like to meet more authors and have more signed books. What other sci-fi authors have you met/ gotten signed books from?

Not really, but it was great to hear him talk about the creation of his books and how he decides to write. Its also good to know that he has as much trouble describing what he writes as the rest of us!

I bought one of his books as a Christmas present for my cousin's hubby a couple years ago. Of course, I had to read it first, and I loved it. I almost didn't want to give it away after that. But I did, sigh. It was the one about Humpty Dumpty...

Actually, "The Great Over Easy" was his first book - original title "Who Killed Humpty Dumpty". Naturally it didn't get published until after he got his Thursday Next books published.

Have you loaned me anything he's written? I can't recall. What does he write? Fantasy? Science fiction? Romance? History? Humor? What? Maggiepie "Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted." ~ Jules Renard, author (1864-1910)

Oh! Thursday Next! NOW I remember! I loved his books, & surreal is the perfect way to describe them! Very droll sense of humor, too. Maggiepie "Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted." ~ Jules Renard, author (1864-1910)

I'm not going to say he's my #1 favorite author, but he's probably in the top 50... At least I'm better than my friend who had her top 500 favorite guys (all looks not all personalities)...

He was very nice! Didn't look at all 50, I will have to say, more like late 30's. He's got one of those self-depreciating British personalities, able to laugh at himself. I don't know how or why the British do that better than another group. I wish he could've answered my question tho, after all, the Czar is still the ruler of Russia and Wales is a socialist state, but what's going on in his Americas?

I won't say he's my FAVORITE author, but he's in the top 50, maybe even the top 25... I would say that Ann McCaffrey or Mercedes Lackey are probably my favorite, with Orson Scott Card, Robert J. Sawyer (he's Canadian BTW), Janet Evanovich, Andre Norton, Tony Hillermann, A. Conan Doyle are ahead of him. I guess that could still put him in the top 10...

I heard a young gal there that said it was kind of "The Phantom Tollbooth" for grown ups

He writes really hard to describe books... he said it was really hard to pitch them to people because when they asked "What's it about?" he would go... "Its... ah... well... just read it."
