Knitting for next winter

It's almost too warm to wear sweaters here in the Phoenix, AZ area, so I'm starting to think about next winter - if you want to call what we get 'winter'. :-) My son mentioned to me a few weeks ago that he wanted something cuddly to wear to school next year instead of his usual sweatshirts or jackets. He loves to cuddle with my yarn and starting to hint that he'd like a sweater. So, my question is... for those that have knitted for 7 year olds, what was your favorite pattern or style for a child at that age? I may point out that my son is a red head and loves the color green - especially that pukey-army green and amazingly enough, I found that color yarn! I'm not looking for actual patterns itself, I can design my own, but I'd love to get ideas. :-) Thanks in advance, Pinka

Good morning, pinkap..and "Welcome" to myLot! The last time I was in Arizona, many years ago..you got your first snowfall, in I don't know how many years, the night after I left...but I didn't miss out, I came home to snow. I did fine the evenings, early mornings "coolish" but did think you are in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. My son is long past seven, but the thing that I found most, that he wore, was a zipper up vest (it was knitted out of Buffalo Wool, Cowichan style.) He actually almost wore it out, he like having his arms free, but back & chest warm. The next year, I made him a sweater (matching his Dad's) and that was seldomly worn. He just seemed to like the zipper vest! He is now 30, and has a Cowichan Zipper vest! Good idea to start now, before summer activities intercede! Cheers!

well i live in south carolina and even when it starts to get warm outsite i still like to knit winter garments when i think of knitting clothes i think of sweaters and jackets and big thick winter blankets i do not think of much stuff that you can knit during the summer to wear use your imagination when it comes to thinking of patterns and do what i always do just make up the pattern yourself and go with it i never learned to read a pattern so i picture the final product in my head and make up the stitches as i go along i have made several sweaters and they turned out lovely this way

If he wants something snuggly for those cool days, why not knit him a hooded jacket with a zip front? Make it so that he could wear it as a sweater if he wanted to, and a light jacket (if it ever gets that cold there!). I knitted all of my kids and grandkids hooded jackets one Christmas and they all loved them.
