How daring are your eating habits?

I have just come back from my vacations in Aruba and I managed to smuggle in my suitcase a couple of caribbean seasonings, one for chicken and one for fish. I love to try new spices and new food. Even when I don´t specially like something, I try it again somewhere else or get acostumed to the taste little by little. It happened to me that way with wasasi, the green hot pasta you have in japanese food. At first I just felt that fire was coming out from my nose; now I love it and eat more than my share. How about you? Are you the conservative kind as eating goes or do you dare try out some (or all) new stuff that is given to you? I have my limits: I will not eat cockroaches, no matter how tasty.

I know when I was in China, I did try foods that I normally wouldn't try in America. I guess it had more to do with the fact that I didn't have a choice. If I didn't eat Chinese food, I wouldn't eat at all because it was fairly difficult to find western food without paying a western price for it. The only thing I would stay away from were the really hot spicy foods. I did discover a number of new tastes and I would often go to the same places many times. Oh, and I agree. I will not eat cockroaches either.

I have tried many awesome and different foods from the chinese cuisine. It is very different from the type of food you eat at chinese restaurants made for westerners. You have yet to tell us of you experiences in China. Any pictures?

Sorry, no pictures. My first experience with real Chinese food was when I met my sister-in-law who is from Taiwan. Her cooking was way different than what you get in restaurants. And when you eat in a restaurant in China, it is all very good compared to anything you can get in America. It just isn't the same.

Now you´ll have to watch your diet and your cholesterol level, if you want to play with your grandson instead of just watch him play a few yeasrs from now. Congrats again, granpa

I do admit to being VERY adventurous when in comes to consumbables...BUT very, very reticent to expand consuming to "insects" of any form! Altho, I do remember as a kid, playing a game of survival, and trying sugar ants. I think that one indulgence abruptly halted my insect consumption. But when it comes to "foreign to me" foods, I am pretty open, and do like to try the foods, common to the country that I visit. And as for "Wasabi"...can't get enough of it, and finally found a market that sells the truly GOOD HOT stuff! Funny, that you should mention it...as I grow regular horseradish, and this year thought I would try growing the root that they use for Wasabi.

I am very much like you, pergammano. And yet I don´t see myself eating insects although I have tried so many things that I will not swear I don´t do it in the future.

I'm open to tring new food but I won't eat any meats besides beef, chicken, pork, duck and fish. I eat seafood as well. I don't think I'm dare to try insects, I think it is gross whether it tastes good or not...

I see that your daring is more towards veggies. I have tried many other meats but insects is not something I´m up to try yet.

hi marguicha^^; i love trying new delicacies and specialties of different countries. when i see a country's restaurant, i in a way have to try what they have in there. turskish, greek, spanish, mexican, indian and so on. Chinese food? i've eaten a lot of them but hey not those roaches, bugs and rats cut and cooked like chicken....arrgghh! i like "sashimi" too (fresh cuts of fish) dipped in "wasabe" and soy sauce. i also have tried the japanese fresh/raw beef strips (eaten like sashimi). Now i eat "kimchi" (Korean pickled cabbage). if you like spicy, well, you can try this since it is an acquired taste to liken it. It is ranked as one of the most nutritious food because of the lactobacilli content like those in yogurt.

I have tasted and liked all of the food you mentioned. I go often to japanese restaurants as it´s a kind of food that my mother likes and I´m the one who takes her to the super and for her meds. Part of the outing is to have a nice lunch together. I love sashimi with wasabe, ginger and soy sauce. Of the fish I prefer tuna although salmon could be my second pick.

I use to be very open to all foods. I still am to some extent. Where I lived people were very conservative with their foods so people would look at what I eat and gag! They couldn't handle sushi, sashimi, even shrimp! Being experimental, you learn the hard way what you can't eat! I only found out as a teenager that I was allergic to mussels and olives. That was the worst feeling of my life, so now I'm not as extroverted with food. I still love eating a wide variety - thai and indian food are my favorites.

Thanks for sharing, sasha. It is true that allergies don´t help our daring impulses. But that also happens with usual food in our own countries. I know people in my country who are allegic to seafood )we have a lot here) and even to tomatoes. Fortunatly the only food that doesn´t agree with me are dry beans but it´s not allergy so I have them once in a while.

not daring.. not at all! I am not thee kind of person that would try something unusual.. no excotic foods.. but "new things or recipes" that are made of common ingredients.. sometimes i give them a try especially if they are suggested by friends... hehe

I know what you mean. That´s why I would not try snakes or insects as those ingredients don´t belong to my culture. But I have learned not to say that I won´t ever do this or that. So everything is a maybe.

You smuggler you! LOL... I don't blame you I would have done the same. I am all for seasoning and spices to spice up food anytime. Although I must admit that I am not very daring with certain foods. Like anything I know that is a pet I will not eat. Like goat, lamb, frogs, rabbit, etc.. I won't even dare try it and certainly not cockroaches, lol

New Year in Miami - We took pictures at a friend´s house. New Year in Miami is something to see once in your lifetime.
I don´t think I´ll ever try insects, but I can separate perfectly well meat from pets. When my kids were little they had a chick that turned to a small hen. She had a name, came to the dining room to pick up the leftovers and accepted to be carried in a doll´s pram. She had nothing to do with chicken I buy at the super. But I can understand your point of view.
