I was thinking about children being home and outside a portion of the day. When I had guardianship of my granddaughter and was fully responsible for her well being I used to have her watch Oprah when she had kids safety rule day on her show. I even got the book the man who was on the show had written. Here is an article about this very thing:

I wonder how many children even just in my apartment complex have had their parents set down with them and go over safety rules with them. Do they know their full names, address, telephone number and how to call 911? I remember my grandmother making me memorize it all. Do you do this with your child? Or did you when they were young?

U can't teach them enough about safety anymore because there are so many bad things happening to kids. It wasn't like that when my children were young especially my oldest. I did warn them of course about things like talking to strangers etc. but it just wasn't that bad back then.I do worry about my grandkids & all the mean disgusting things that are done to children nowadays. Living in a small town like we do helps but they have been warned about danger.

The freedom I had as a young kid and now are worlds apart. I have to know where my kids are and back then I had run of all the neighbors and clear down the ditch bank. As long as I was home by dark I was good to go. Now days you just can't do that.

how true that is, we did the same thing. We stayed out all day till mother made us come in for supper. It's so sad that children can't have that freedom now because they are so many hoodlums around.

I have to say I havent had my kids memorize, although we just moved. in our old neghborhood, well in our old state of WA. They didnt get to play outside a lot. Now their outside all the time, of course with me watching them. I do feel it important for kids to know this info. I have talked to them about saftey, but we need to work on memorizing address and phone number.

Back in the day when I was growing up, I remember this being an important thing with everyone knowing their address, their phone number, etc. but now a days I know a lot of kids that could never tell you this. I have heard horror stories of kids on school buses, in Taxi Cabs, etc. unaware of their address, or how to get a hold of someone if need be. Teaching a child safety and address, etc. should be important as you never know who is really going to be around your kids for sure.

My grandmother set up a plan of what I was to do and taught me all the important info. She was ahead of her time I think.

I do not remember doing this with my kids, but I know that they knew all of that before they went to school. I know when I worked in HeadStart we taught a lot of that and especially fire safety, stop drop roll, dial 911. We even took the kids through the fire fighter "smoke house" and helped them climb out a window.

Maybe Headstart kids are getting it then. My granddaughter didn't know a thing until I taught her. I guess different areas do it differently too.

Oh yes...that was very important to me that they know. The earlier they know, the better. You just never know what could happen or when they might need to know. We can be the most careful parents in the world and still have something happen in which they might need that info.

And children have a right to know what is going on in the world. I just think it is criminal to keep kids in this protective bubble. They need to live and experience things. Our job is to teach them not hide them from the world. I was discussing this with a gal the other day and she said that in one class room only a couple of kids even knew what the currents events were in the world.

It's one of the things on a list for children to learn in Kindergarten, name, age, address, phone number, name of their parents. Ever ask a kid their parents' names, "Mom and Dad or Dad and Step-Mom or Step-Dad and Mom."
Dialing 911 is at school, too.
Hope this discussion catches on and you help a lot of people.

I mean in my area, it's on the list. Now sure about other areas. We have a pretty intensive list of things to teach kids in Kindergarten now.

My grandson wasn't but maybe my great grandson will learn it at school. His mom should teach him. I may have to myself. Hehe
