And then there was a jury summons

So here I am, worst cold I have had in five years and I get a jury summons for this upcoming week. I do not mind jury duty, but I just hope I am through with these coughing spasms by Tuesday. Of course, I need to call the night before, to make sure the case is still scheduled, and I need to bring the letter with me. Well, with a temp of 102, my brain was fried. I just did a massive search, and found my letter. Whew!!! I have been called for jury duty before. I have served twice and been dismissed once or twice. I do not mind doing it. How about you?

Oh gosh I was supeona one day because I use to ignore the orders. I was then selected and served the first case in Illinois for the electric chair. It was a 7 1/2 week case and I was scared out of my wits. Since then I have attended each and every order and have been dismissed each time. During the 7 1/2 week jury duty I have such a bad head cold and could not breath. I do hope yours can be canceled so you do not have to attend and rest a bit more.

If I have to go in on Tuesday I will take my box of Kleenex and some cough drops. I think living where you do the trials would be a lot more serious. My first one was bad enough, and then, THEN, because our little local paper did not have enough news to print one of the days they published the names and addresses of the jurors. The guy on trial was an ape!! I was scared out of my skin on that one. He had tried to strangle his wife under the Christmas tree, in front of the two kids. She had left him twice before and gone back to him. Among other things we recommended counseling for the kids and for the woman, and yes, we convicted the guy.

Oh HWG, you ignored the orders? That is almost as bad as ignoring the IRS....

Yup I was so young and naive and allowed my ex-husband to convince me it was not necessary to go in. lol but when that day came, that I was supeona I no longer listened to a word he said and hmm wonder if that is one of the reasons why he is an ex.

Well, with your condition, can you explain it to the court that you might not be comfortable with such high fever. Even though you are selected, you might not be able to make judgment with rational reason. All you want to do just hopefully the case is over soon, so you can get home soon and get some rest. I hope those lawyers can be understandable.

My heavy cough would be disruptive, I just want to show that I am willing. This will just be a civil case and probably only last a short time.

I got called on a "change of venue" one from Tarrant County, and then got called on a retrial of a local one. I got interviewed and dismissed on the first, and had to excuse myself on the second because I worked at a place where I saw the clipping service's articles on the case, so I knew too much about it (and thought he needed to be strung up by his short hairs!)

I have actually served on two cases. I found the first one scary and the second one boring. I felt like we did some good on the first one.It was a domestic violence case, and we were also able to recommend that the entire family needed counseling. The second one was a young person who had a traffic violation and was trying to say that the police mistreated him. I learned in the jury room that our police are not well thought of.

I have been excused before, when I had two jobs that both would have required substitutes, and I did request it. I just figure that with nothing occupying my time except my computer, if they need me, I will do it. I have had them postpone the case when I have called the night before, as well.

I do hope that you will feel better soon. You cannot do jury duty whilst sick. Myself - I have never been called for jury duty - maybe they heard something about me.Listen - call in sick and spend the day in bed. am gonna send you some rum. Have it straight or hot or heat some milk and put in rum and a bit of honey. Happy drinking. Oh, remember not to drive after drinking the rum

I am going to call tonight and see what they have to say. Chances are good the trial will be postponed or delayed. If not, I am going to walk in with a huge box of Kleenex and a bottle of hand sanitizer and see if they will throw me out. I just want to come visit you, that would make me feel better.

Oh that would be wonderful. But you would have to share my king size bed With my daughter and her friends on weekends it is not unusual for me to wake up and see a few stray female bodies sleeping beside me Seriously, have not posted for several months and answered so few. Am helping my son with his election campaign and do some research for him too.

I have been noticified to do jury duty four tiomes. The first two times I ignored it and nothing happened. I have been summoned twice more. I lied to get out of it both times! I refuse to do it! I know I will be picked every time even though I will try not to! I have a problem of getting stuck in situations I am not comfortable in and will be embarrassed. I plan to avoid this forever! it is not for me and I also know no one will listen to my opinion anyway! No does anyway as it is!

I am sorry you get so little respect. I know that they can fine you or maybe worse for evasion, but I also feel that if a person truly is unable to handle doing jury duty they should be excused. Often when you are summoned, at least around here, the case is settled out of court and you never even get into the selection process. I was very nervous and uncomfortable with the first time I served, but our foreman was very experienced and did an excellent job, and I learned a lot.

I had jury duty once but my boss would not let me attend . I was managing a company bookstore at the time and I was really pleased to be given a chance to have the experience. But I was told I would not be attending....seeing as how I was the store manager and all that. I'm still disappointed by that whenever I think about it.

You rarely hear of it here. I've never even known of any of my family, friends or acquaintances who have had to do jury duty....except one, aw workmate, who was called but the case was dropped.

The trial I was scheduled for did not go through. I can be summoned again, I think until the end of this month. We live in a small town where not much goes on usually. Hubby had just barely moved here and got a summons for Federal Jury duty and served. He had to drive to Wichita.

I have been called once but didn't go. I just don't like it at all, I know you could go to jail for it but technically the letter was sent to the wrong address, with the wrong last name, and they couldn't very well prove that I live this in county again anyway. Yeah, bad of me, I know.

Hi. GardenGerty. I have never been to a jury summons before. I have never been called for one. I know a few people have told me that they have been selected to be a part of the jury trial. I also was told that they had gotten paid for their time too. Did you get paid? I wished that they would not let you come being that you have a bad cold. I mean your health should come first though shouldn't it? I know that they are very strict about a person serving jury duty, and if they don't come the person can be taken to jail. This is what I have been told. That is why I really don't want them to contact me about serving on the jury. What if I can't show up? I hope that you will feel better so that you can attend the jury summons.

The trial did not happen. I believe you get paid $10 per day. I am still eligible to be called if they need me, at least til the end of this month.

I don't mind. But I never get selected. Being a Christian conservative has its merits.

I have been called to jury duty twice. The first time the guy on trial turned out to be a boyfriend of my cousin's so they didn't take me. The second one I was in the transport bus along with about five others and on my way to the court house when the driver was called and we were not needed. Never would have minded but never was actually needed.

Lately I haven't been called for jury duty...thank goodness. When I was younger, it seemed like I was summond all the time. I once had to sit on a jury that lasted for over 3 weeks...long and very boring days. I am sorry that you have to deal with all this jury stuff when you aren't feeling good. I have to say I am not a big fan of jury duty. I guess it would probably be better if I ever had a interesting case....just long boring ones. I hope you feel better.

Well, the case I was to be on did not go to trial, so I am off the hook for this week, but I think I can still be called up for another month. I feel much better except for coughing so very hard.

You know... I am going on 32 in July and I have never once been called for jury duty. All I say is thank goodness! I did have to testify in a case once and that was no fun. I'm afraid i'd be falling asleep in the stands because I did that before during a court hearing and when my head bobbed waking me up I looked and noticed the bailiff giggling at me. lol

I think my first time to serve I was about your age. They take their lists from the registered voters. I would rather be the jury than testify. I have not had to testify in court but have had to talk one on one with detectives over a situation at a job. I might fall asleep this week if I get called just because of this rotten cold that I have.

Well, I have actually been called to Jury duty like 3 times I think. All 3 times I could not do it due to Health issues. One time had my Doctor even send in the reason. Personally I would not mind doing it if they paid more and if they could guarantee you would be on a case. I think some cases might even be a little exciting to be on.

I've never been on jury duty and never wish to either! I don't like having such weight on my shoulders. Besides, having a hearing problem, I can't do it so just as well! Now as for you being sick, I doubt they'll let you be on this time. Coughing and sneezing creates havoc on the trial so I'm sure you'll be let off that hook.

I wouldn't mind being summoned for jury duty but have never been called. I've had several friends who have served. A lot of people try to find some way to get out of it. I saw on the news this past week where one woman made up an elaborate excuse to not serve. The judge didn't accept her reasons and cited her. Gave her a judgement that she'd have to serve indefinitely. He excused her after a day but said he hoped he'd taught her and others a lesson about doing their duty.

The first time, I did not really want to serve, but it was such a Civics lesson for me. I felt like we did our job, and did it well. We convicted the guy, not because we did not like him and he looked like an ape, but because he had done a serious bad thing. If more people would serve others would not get called up so often

I've been called for jury duty a few times, but have only served once. I found it interesting, and would be happy to serve again. It was most interesting to watch the 'show' that the lawyers put on to sway the jury to their point of view. If I had to serve on a jury panel that had to sit for weeks, or months, I'd no doubt have a different opinion.

My longest was three days. I imagine if I serve I will have internet withdrawal. You are right, the lawyers show off, and the plaintiff and accused also have their personas that they display.

I have also been called for jury duty in May. I am going to try for a medical excuse...not because I want to, I just don't think I can physically able to do it. I have trouble walking and sitting for long periods of time, and there is a problem with having a bathroom very close. Don't think the judge would like it if I had to keep going to the bathroom. You never know what the case is gonna be, but there is a murder trial coming up and the jury is to be selected in May, so it kinda sounds like that might be what I have been called for. A bunch of people, the youngest one 17, tortured and murdered a mentally handicapped woman, put her body in a trash can, and left it in a parking lot. Would not be a one day thing, I think. By the way, jurors are not just chosen from voter registration lists. I am not a registered voter, and I have been called twice. Also, the last time I went, anyone who did not show up received a visit from the county sheriff.

I know it varies from place to place, and I think it is appropriate for people who are not registered voters to serve as well. I could be wrong about that. They should give you a medical deferral. Perhaps your doctor could write a deferral slip. Some people are just plain mean and need to have some big consequences.
