If a man dies of malnutrition it makes a headline in the newspaper. But every year thousands of people die at a premature age due to diseases resulting from overeating especially in rich countries, which never makes any headline in the newspaper and so we can not usually come to know of the facts and figures. Health hazards arising out of overeating now stand as a great challenge to medical profession. Are you aware of this problem?

hi didi, you are right but malnutrition shows the poverty, but excess eating food is due to richness, though those people die at premature age due to diseases resulting overeating means that is their mistake not any one mistake,Govt is saying that do not waste food and conserve food, but no body is caring for it,they are experiencing the same, have a ice day

Yes I'm very much aware of it. But still lot of awareness programs should be telecast-ed on television & published in newspapers frequently. Lot of youngsters are getting into the habit of eating junk food like pizzas, burgers, sandwiches etc, due to which they become obese & suffer with serious diseases. Overeating junk food which collects lot of cholesterol in our body & lack of daily physical activity or exercise leads to health hazards. I want to seek advice from you on skipping breakfast in the mornings. I work in night shifts & return home at 4AM daily & go to bed at 4:30Am & wake up at 12 noon. So, I don't get to have my breakfast in the morning. What should I do to minimize any complications due to this? Can I eat something at 4AM when I come back from my work? Will it help me? Thanks in advance.

I think all of us are now aware of the problems of over eating but still I can find lots of kids or young persons who are victims of over eating.

Well, it can be said as definate Truth and something that both doctors and others around need to realize these things are happening. And more often it ends up being the people who are the poorest as well. Either they are dying from starvation and being able to find ways to get food in their house, or they are eating the wrong types of foods, or just Junk food, and end up becoming obese which will soon lead to other Health issues as well. There could a lot said for lack of education on this topic, and would be nice if it would only show.

Yes, both categories are unacceptable by society. While malnutrition always shows poverty, overeating of food usually associate with richness in life. It is always said that eat what you can eat for a healthy body and mind. Don't overeat until it causes disease to your health. As for those countries that have high rate of poverty, the government need to comes-up with special program, to help improve the life of its poor citizen, so the malnutrition rate will drop and hopefully will bring more healthy living into its citizen life.

Yes, I do aware of it. Perhaps because malnutrition issue will raise the eyebrows more than overeating. Nowadays most of people are enough feeding, they have enough food to eat. So when comes to malnutrition case, they think that was strange. Foods are everywhere. This will make them make assumption that it is common for people to die because of overeating than less eating. As the truth is we should concern about both cases.Have them all in moderation~

Overeating leads to obesity, however, if not in proper dieting this leads to malnutrition or heart failure or that kind that you can no longer wake-up due to excessive intake of food. And so proper diet and to observe the right nutrition as well as yearly general check-up makes a sound healthy living.

Yes and no. For about 30 years the Food Nazis have been trying to scare people into eating " right" They pick a food and tell us it is good or bad. But then they come back after a few years and reverse what they said. And all the while , they tell people of normal weight that they are too fat. So Normal people are dieting and many are ignoring Any of the studies and eating what they like. Why are people in rich countries suffering from diseases? Because we don't exercise and we eat more food than before. Back in the day , Pre Food Nazis. people ate more at home and ate Less food. Both kids and adults got more exercise. Dad , mostly dads, Did sit at the office all day but they Also came home and played with their kids outside on the weekends. Moms , most moms, were home but they had All the housework and they also went outside to exercise on the weekends. Kids came home from school and went out to play. But with Both parents Having to work, even on weekends, kids playing video games and fast food Super Sizing Everything , we are fatter. And we are going to get even fatter because many can't or won't change. No one is home to cook that meal so they drive thru at a fast food restaurant. Kids won't go out and play because the computer games are more fun and their parents feel better because they are indoors and "safe".

The reason the malnutrition stores makes headline is that it is not the norm in these rich countries. People can eat any kind of food they wish. Malnutrition still is around even here. People need fruit and veggies too. If they just eat meat then they could become malnurished as well.

Being overweight and being malnourished are not opposites. Many over weight people are malnourished because they eat to much of the wrong foods and not enough of the right healthy ones. Many skinny people are underweight but nevertheless well nourished. What you eat is actually the most important thing.

Hi Doctordid, actually, for a long time I have been thinking. Now that we have computers and better way to manage things. Cant we come up with balanced meals for everybody? That way, we wont waste anything, and few people would die of malnutrition or over-eating.

These are two health conditions that are not beneficial to the human body. Not having enough food or consuming too much food could bevery hazardous to our health. they are deinitely two choices that would be wiser made.

Well, here i the US, being overweight is an epidemic. The reason is that years ago, I'd say before the 60's, people used to heat fresh healthy foods. Fresh meat and vegetables. When the little farmers started dying out to the big conglomerates, people were no longer eating healthy food. What they do on these farms now is they feed the animals mostly cornmeal with steroids in them. We do not even know what we are eating anymore. I remember when I was a kid, when my mother would buy a chicken, it was not that big. Now the chickens look like turkeys. This is the main reason for obesity. And another fact is that people are dying younger now, at least my generation. And lets not forget fast food like, McDOnald's or Burger King. With the fast paced life style here in the US no one has time to cook anymore, so they resort to fast food or frozen meals in the supermarket.

People who are over weight can easily be malnourished. It isn't so much how much a person eats but what they eat that is the issue. Meats, vegetables, even grasses (rice is a grass)are all things consumed by humans, yet some things can cause weight gain. People eat starches, potatoes, pasta, etc, because they are less expensive than meats and produce, they are filling, so eating them will satisfy hunger more quickly than other foods. These food items are easily digested and starch converts to sugar and sugar to starch, the body stores these items as 'emergency' energy supplies. Obesity isn't always a eating issue, it can be a medical one, or even a mental issue. There are glands in the body that either cease to work or reduce their output, sometimes due to aging, sometimes disease, and sometimes for reasons that we fail to understand. Some of these glands are regulatory glands, regulating intake of food, uses of that food and of course storage of it. Then there is the change of hormones as people age, some people experience these changes at earlier ages than others, some people are affected more heavily than others by these changes. The mental can be anything from depression to simple laziness. A moving body burns what it consumes, while a still body burns less and stores more. The reason that a person dying from malnourishment or from starvation is front page news is that we CAN do something about that, at least the starvation part, malnourishment isn't always something those of us on the outside can offer help with...but obesity, that is something different. If you will turn to the health section of the news, you will often find news of research that has been ongoing for many years pertaining to the obesity issues facing so many. It isn't just the foods we eat, but the processing these foods go through between field and table, between barns and kitchen. Hybreds, genetically modified, enhanced by chemical process...the list is long. Not everyone has the ability to grow their own food supply nor the ability to preserve it. Canned, frozen, dried...these are not new methods of preserving foods, but then grandma didn't add anything but a bit of salt to help keep it fresh.

Hello Dr. Didi! Indeed over eating is a problem. I think I have this problem, but I do exercise so I didn't become so big. Well I think that's why it doesn't reach the headlines because when people die prematurely because of over eating it varies on the type of disease they get. The disease range is too many that sometimes people cannot classify if it's because of over eating or of another cause. For instance, someone get a cardiovascular problem. There are many kinds of heart problem. And there are also many predisposing factor aside from over eating like maybe due to cholesterol and fat deposits lodged in the arteries, lack of activity, ,blood clot, injury, or congenital anomaly. So even if it is really due to over eating it is kinda hard to pinpoint. The way I see it food is mostly the reason why people die. It maybe the lack of it or too much of it. It is somehow ironic how something that gives us life could also end up taking it away.

Hi DoctorDidi, I am very aware of this problem as must anyone who lives in prosperous countries. We see obese people around us everyday as we walk the streets of shop at supermarkets or malls. It is getting to be one of the biggest health problems and a growing number of people seem to be paying less and less attention to it. Those who carry around a lot of weight find it more and more difficult, especially as they age. Blessings.

Oh yes I am aware of this! I am in the catagory of the overeaters. I am morbidly obese. Eating for me is comfort whcich I don't get from people when I need it. Food is a freind. It deosn't talk back to me. It doesn't insult me. It is always there for me! It is not an easy habit to break especially after only in the past few years why I do eat the way I do! It is something I need to do but I am learning the older it gets harder to get rid of old habits! I am getting to the piont I don't want to try anymore! I truly believe hypnois is the only way for me to lose weight and eat healthier! I am way to old for this sh*t!!! I refuse to deal with it on my own!

Yeah iam well aware of this Problem and as you pointed that when people die of Malnutrition there is just so big news flashes and when the same opposite happens no body just cares to talk about it. People today due to technology and various facilities and do work from home and vice versa. There are lots of talks regarded on the health issue due to overeating. There should be proper awareness of health issues of both Obesity and Malnutrition and this should be brought to the concern of people unless the Hazards of these things are not shown.. no proper steps can be taken to control this situations.

It is a saying in India that we eat to live not live to eat. So I also believe in it. But in these the food which have good nutrition is rare. We want grow more more grains in less time this is the reason the grain are not good quality as in past. Overeating is problem in developed countries I think it is not general in India.

What you said is very true and I am very aware of this problem. In the US, thousands of Americans each year die from overeating related diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and so forth. The list goes on and on. :( But, it is true that a man dying of malnutrition is reported and a man dying from something like the diseases I listed above is not reported. It's the saddest reality that we have to deal with.
