If you're down, how do you rev up?

Some have said that running can help one get rid of the symptoms of depression faster than any other psychotherapy. In a research conducted, patients complaining about depression had to go out and run three times a week for half an hour. Ten weeks after, 60% of the patients recovered fully from their depression without discussing their problem with a therapist. What is your view on this? How do you rev up when you're depressed?

Depression is something which not lets any one do anythign. Now comming to running i dont think a depressed person would like to go and have a run.Depressed people like to be in their own works ,if needed the y do if not they sleep ,Depression can not go with some exercise,it is that work makes them forget the depressed situation.Thats all not thing more than that would happen.

Hi umabharti! Thanks for your response. There are others who may find running a cure to their depression as you would have thought work as something that may help forgetting it. Furthermore, as I have put it, it was shown in a research conducted. To my mind, it is easier to go running to combat depression than working (office work) as the latter needs some form of concentration. So, when one is depressed, like me, I cannot concentrate fully, thus, I commit so many errors. But there are other ways to rev up when you're feeling down, like, doing meditation, listening to music, swimming or any other form of sports.

But one way of revving up or stirring up our feelings when we are down is to do something we wanna do or we love to do. This could be in many ways like, as research has said, running or anything of that kind. Others would even dance just to shake off that down feeling. We cannot do away with depression, it may happen anytime. What we should learn is to be able to manage to stir up ourselves to kick off the blues..

Running can be possible to only one group of people .Not every one like it right , many people who are disabled or old they too have stress ,they can not manage running in the ground or exercising .They like to get out of depression by some easy things like listening music or meditation .Some times a walk can do help. And sometimes playing with grandchildren or pets or chating with friends also do a great help.Sometiems a good book can be a friend so that to forget the depression .Some times a nap or a sleep can help.

Whenever I am feeling depressed, down, or bored I pretty much always just try and find something to occupy myself so that way I'm not focusing as much on the way I am feeling. There are a variety of things that I do that make me feel a lot better which include running, playing basketball, gardening, walking my dog, playing with my lizard, playing bass or guitar, doing online earning, playing video games, hanging out with friends, reading, and much much more.

Hi jambi! It's good to know you have so many ways of revving up. You have an active life, I supposed, that is why depression or that gloomy feeling seldom happens. But in the event it does strike, your manner of shaking off the blues will surely hit the target. It's just so interesting to note that you have included in your list, online earning as your way of feeling better. I'm pretty sure mylotting gets into the front seat. :)

I cannot speak for anyone else of course, but I have found that running does really work for me. It helps me deal with the stress of life and it helps me get through the days. I am a full time caregiver for my son who was injured in an automobile accident and running is my only escape. I run 4 mornings a week while the aid is here. I have done 18 races now too... it is my outlet. I have found it very helpful for my situation.

Wow that's nice to know. You are among those who have benefited from running. It does not only kick off our blues, but make us fit and trim as well. One health benefit of running is that, it makes us mentally alert too. In other words, so much health benefits can be derived from running, thus, it's high time that we consider it worthy of our time.

I think most labor work can help, including running. I tried running once when I was down, and it is quite beneficial. But I would like to do the cleaning work in the house to get rid of the kind of feeling, or walk my dog until it cannot move a step. I remember in second part of 2009 I felt very frustrated becoz of something, and I just went to the sport machines in my block. I was on them for a month, and then I found that I was not so frustrated and my body became more strong. And I found that playing ping-pang ball helps too. I think maybe you can also get some friends to talk casually, that works a lot.

Hi flzmlady, that's nice. Indeed, running is beneficial to rev up, so does house cleaning. House cleaning helps us get rid of our feeling blue but also gives us the good feeling that our surroundings is clean, which is good to our health too. I agree too that walking your dog revs you up because just by the knowledge that you have given your pet some of its need to keep it healthy, will already make your day. Engaging into some sports as you mentioned would really take out the blue and is healthy too.

Listening to music is probably the answer to everything for me. It helps keep my mood up when I feel down and relaxes me. Anywya I never knew running helped get over depression. I think I might give it a try, but actually I'm not depressed. Anywho I love running but haven't done it for sometime now.

Yes, thatgirl, music soothes us if we are depressed. Sometimes if i feel blue, I would force myself to sing even if I don't feel like doing it. Then after about five minutes or so, I would have the mood to sing. The reason for this is that, maybe because I am a music lover. Anyone who loves music a lot, will remain that way, and that will always manifest anytime.

I do believe it is true. It is one of the best ways of combating depression and even stress. But I unfortunately do not have a lot of time to run. What I do that really works for me is that I just sings things out. When I am at the moment really down I just put my favorite songs on and sing my heart away. In such a way, it makes me feel as if every hard feelings goes out as I exhale the words. Running has always been a good exercise. Must be the reason why all those stressors vanish, and keeping the new ones from attacking your body.

Hi thetis! That's a nice comment, though, most would really vouch that running keeps the blue away, time matters most in making it happen. Sometimes, we really have to prioritize what is most important and what is least. Others do keep health in their priority list, that's why revving up will have to take the front seat. On the other hand, one activity may be substituted by another, thus, some would choose the less strenuous and most convenient form.

I will go to a book store or a shopping mall to distract my attention from the depression. I believe once your depression is distracted, it's gone. Sometimes I go to park or amusement park to see children playing or even play with them. It's very helpful.

Hi! Thank you for the response. That is also one of my many ways to rev up when I feel depressed. Rather than sulk in one corner and be gloom for many hours, it's better to go out and do something about the situation. Sometimes friends may find me in a book store looking for a nice book or magazine to read because I can say I'm a bookworm myself. Window shop is another way to make myself alive, though, it may hurt my pocket because I might be tempted to buy in the end. Strolling is fun especially if you enjoy seeing playful children.

I too believe that physical exercise can help you change the direction of your train of thoughts and hence taking you out of a gloom. Yoga has been great to me. It helps in removing all the blues and feel fresh. I push myself to go out and have some thing done to me or do something natural to start feeling fresh at times. Even inhaling and exhaling in an open environment helps.

Hello!Thank you for the comment. Yeah, I have heard so many times that yoga helps a lot in kicking off the blues. So do breathing exercises.. One of these days, I hope I can also engage on that activity.
