How do feel about blood transfusion?

How does blood transfusion makes you feel? Or how does it feel if there is no other choice that you need to have one? I certainly would not like a strangers blood inside my body although I'd have to accept it if it saves my life. It just sounds scary because there was once a \news where one person was given blood that has HIV. I just have this strange thought of asking because I have a pregnancy complication called placenta previa and if my placenta is not back up after the next ultrasound I'd definitely have to go through C-section, which I hate so much otherwise I will have the risk of bleeding and may need blood transfusion which I really hate the most. It is so scary. I used to drink plenty of fresh tomato juice to purify my blood and I'm keeping myself healthy so everything is clean inside of me and that just scares me because if that could happen I might have to worry all my life where the blood i could have be coming from.

Blood transfusion is kinda scary but if that's the only way for you to compensate your blood loss then you don't have other chance to grab it. You have the right to ask your doctor about the medical profile of the blood donor so you will feel secure somehow. In Jehova's witnesses blood transfusion is prohibited in their doctrine but the bible says you had to give what you have. Another option to reduce the risk of blood transfusion is you should eat green leafy vegetables rich in iron like celery, ampalaya, pechay, beans plus food supplements.

But the most fearsome of this process is medical malpractice in blood transfusion which is very common in some hospitals.

Yes, that is just one of the best that I also need to remember. I am healthy at least anyway and have enough good supplements. I also trust my doctor. She is very good.

Hello Dear Thetis! I can understand your problem! Don't worry about the blood transfusion unnecessarily! Now a days the blood collected in every blood bank is screened for HIV and other diseases that can be spread through the blood and having found that everything is OK then only the blood is stored for the use in the blood bank! So please remove your unnecessary fear of getting contaminated with blood borne infections because of blood transfusion! Yes, there could have been one or odd cases of transmission of HIV because of faulty blood transfusion in the past! Now the things have go changed and every precaution is being taken by the doctors to ensure that he blood used for transfusion is free of all contaminants! After all doctors are qualified lot and they know their job and we should trust them and their efficiency! I know many people who are undergoing Hemodialysis once in 15 days or so where entire blood is taken put of the body and subjected to purification, if needed such people are given additional blood also. I have not heard any thing untowards happened o them! So be positive and try t face the situation boldly and bravely ! The God is great and every thing will be alright and you will have a healthy baby and you will have a wonderful health after your surgery! Many a times C- Surgery may not require additional blood at all! If you have sufficient hemoglobin in your blood level then normally doctors manage the surgery without additional requirement of blood. So please don't take unnecessary tensions and stress about it as you may have your surgery with out the need of blood only! One thing I a not sure by having plenty of fresh tomato juice if you can really keep your blood pure or not, a I see no logic behind this, but having excessive tomatoes can lead to have urinary calculi! Better consult your physician before doing anything of this sort! You can change or alter your diet programme according to the advice of the expert! All the best! Take Care!

Your very informative addition is so highly appreciated. Thank you. I will surely won't be that stressful anymore. I just happened to hear it on the radio and it was about a few months ago, about the HIV thing being in the transfused blood and it happened just here in my province. I am sure more precautions are taken now after that. It is so good to have you all here to care here in mylot.

first, don't stress too much about it. that's not good for you and the baby. second, it's safe for you to have BT. Those who got HIV was transfused during the 80's. before BT blood would be cross checked (actually 3x xa check. during when the blood was donated, before xa lagay sa blood bank then before transfusion) third, CS delivery is OK. our doctors are well trained. for your peace of mind admit yourself in a good hospital. If you have no budget or worrying about money regional hospitals have well trained doctors. some people have this perceptions that public hospitals have a low quality of healthcare but that's not true. they are good on their field. they handle different cases everyday compared to private hospitals. But you know, I can't say that everything will be alright. I wish I could say that to you but I can't. only god knows our fate/destiny. I wish you well and I hope you have a safe delivery. Just pray to god if you worry too much about it. praying works ;)

Accidents like giving a patient blood infected with HIV are very unlikely, as usually only people who meet certain conditions can donate blood. When it comes to blood donation they try to make sure that the blood might have 0% of possibilities of infection, so you don't have to be worried about. Also it will turn into part of your body, as your body will assimilate and mix it with your own one

Yes and that is fortunately for the very careful people who do their job very well. How I have come up to this thought is that not long ago just this year I heard it on the radio and this happened here in my province. And I was shocked thinking how and why it happened and that the blood was already given to the patients. Some hospital here are having issues on wrecklessness. Although I would be going to a good hospital sometimes I just can't help from thinking about in case I would need transfusion. I would be glad if it happens that way. Thank you so much for sharing.

Yeah, there are risk to do a blood transfusion, especially for people who accepting the blood. When you go for a labor, you will have no choice but you are always at risk that at anytime it will turn into a complication. Things are unexpected. My wife planned to go for natural birth but after tried for almost 12 hours finally she gave up and request for C-section. Although a c-section have the risk of bleeding, but natural birth also have the same risk and you will also need blood transfusion anytime when needed. So, just relax and hopefully things will go smoothly. Good luck and take care.

It is nice of you to share yspmyl. Twelve hours was quite long. My first labor last almost 24 hours but when I was ready it was a little quick. Though there a difficulty at least she came through forceps. She was too big for the opening at 7.2 lbs and 21.5 inches tall. I would wish this one will be smaller. My tummy now is really small anyway than before my doctor said.

Hi Thetis, I had a C section five years ago because of a difficult pregnancy. Now my baby is five and well. I had all your fears back then and had to have bedrest for the duration of my pregnancy. I endured it for nine months. Sitting down on a couch in front of a TV for nine straight months is no mean feat. But if you ask me if I'll do it again just to have another baby, I'd say I would. It's all worth it girl. Now all your fears are fine. Having them is a normal thing. But dwelling on them too much is another thing. There are things more important than our fears and one of this is to try and conquer them. I'd suggest that every time fears like these crop up in your thoughts, reach for a magazine filled with cute baby pictures and imagine just how cute your own child will be. Have a blessed pregnancy Thetis.

I am so happy for you to have shared that. I know I had to be strong or it might hurt me and I don't want that to happen because my babies will need me. I'm so lucky to have a lot of you saying these things to me. You must have been really strong having to go through that for the whole nine months. At least mine was detected when I bled during six months. It could have been busy I am always busy. Lifting things since we move to a new house when I was 3 months pregnant. I was painting and walking around to much. I am a very busy person and doesn't like taking naps at day time. Must have also been the reason why placenta went down further and further. I even fell when I was painting. I took a plastic tool and climb on that to paint and the other stool foot broke. But I did not fall with my butt on the floor. I was still standing but the drop was really heavy I guess.

Personally from what I have heard and learned that Blood Transfusions now are a lot more safer and healthier than they used to be as they Test the people giving blood all the time now, and there are certain factors (at least here in the US) they have to meet before they can ever give blood. I will be Praying that things improve for you and that you do not have to get thru such a dangerous pregnancy.

I don´t mind about that as I hope that there is enough screening before blood is given t someone. But I had a friend that needed surgery with no hurry and had a very special type of blood. The doctors put her on a diet and made her go every some days to the hospital and got her own blood to use, just in case. I found that very intereting, specially since there are some churches who don´t accept blood transfusion from othr people.

Yes and I do hope that in case it happens the blood they transfuse is really safe and pure. That is why I am so careful at this moment. I am just bed resting to avoid bleeding again. But lucky because I think I am okay. And I hope i don't have to go through c-section.

Don't stress yourself thinking about that thetis. I had my blood transfusion 11 years ago at a prestigious hospital here in the Philippines. I was operated for Total Abdomina1 Histerectomy and after the process, during my recovery period, i suddenly have to have blood transfusion. When i woke up it was over and until now i am okay. I didn't pay a single cent except for the blood screening, because i have my medical card courtesy of my husband . So, i think before you will be given a blood transfusion, for sure it will be screened too. Just be in a reliable hospital though, to be sure.

thetis - I wish you have a safe delivery. Re.C section it has become very common and is not a tougher one as you imagine. Many of my relatives had to opt for this only. In one way it is good that it lessens delivery pain. Re. blood transfusion when it has to be done it doesn't make difference whose blood is that, as long as it is good one.

I know times are so much different now but when I had my first child I had to have a blood transfusion. That was 37 years ago. It was long after that before the scare of HIV was heard about. I never give it any thought of were the blood came from only that it saved my life.

Hi Thetis! Just in case you really need to have a blood transfusion, i suggest you can find your blood donor. Find a friend, a relative or someone you think that has a "clean" blood. Before the blood extraction, there will be a screening and a series of tests with complete physical examination to be sure that the donor is disease free. Even in Red Cross or gov't hospitals, they have a thorough screening for the safety of the patients. Right now, I think you have to eat more veges, particularly green and leafy, this helps in the production of your red blood cells and then increase your hemoglobin which is a baseline for a blood transfusion. Don't think too much, this is not a serious problem anyway...

I'm so sorry to hear that you have placenta praevia, but just know that most of the time C-sections are perfectly harmless and definitely a safer option - if you try to give birth naturally with a praevia than you may well bleed a lot! But I think that blood transfusions are life saving treatments and that is the only way you should look at it - think of it as a treatment you are taking to save your life rather than thinking of a stranger's blood inside you! I really hope and pray for you though that a transfusion will not be necessary! Best of luck

Thank you so much for that. Yes, I do think of that too. It's better to have it rather than risking my life not wanting it. I wouldn't want to leave my children off course. So I definitely won't have to think too much about it anymore.
