Miracle in the mud.

I was setting thinking about life, moments that spring to mind, politics(what's been going on in the country lately)and there appears a light bulb over my head. I had it! In August 1969 over 500,000 young people convened on Max Yasgur's 600 acre dairy farm in the Catskills of New York. It was the largest group of people that ever assembled anywhere in the world. It is said to be the most pivotal moment in popular music history and is listed among Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed THe History of Rock and Roll. Here is just a few of the hightlights: * Jimi Hendrix's Star Bangled Banner * Arlo Guthrie's Amazing Grace. * Janis Joplin's Try Just Alittle Bit Harder * Jefferson Airplane's Don't You Want Somebody to Love * The Who's Talking About My Generation * And the skinny white boy everyone thought sounded like a gifted black blues artist- Joe Cocker's Let's All Be Friends. It rained off and on the entire week-end. People were cold and hungry. There were bad trips and all manner of things going on in little scenarios all over. One person was ran over by a honey truck and died. The only mishap the entire week-end. Yet never was there to be again such a coming together of harmony, love and peace. The youth were fed free by people like Wavy Gravy from the Pig Farm and Leni Binder and her peanut butter sandwiches. We are in a bad way in this country we call the United States of America today. Recession, unemployment, war, hunger, and the government can't even get along. Why can't we take a hint from a bunch of muddy hippies and THINK WOODSTOCK!! Why do you think it is such a problem today? I think if some of the reps in congress (that voted themselves a six digit salary FOR LIFE) should have to live on the averaging $1,000 a month that most people on social security have to budget their lives around maybe they would see things differently and they would take of their rose colored glasses and actually come down to Earth. Our tax money and the money we think is in a 'fund' for our social security is footing the bill people! Our taxes are paying for this country to continue along the perilous track it is on. So lets start THINKING WOODSTOCK!! Your thoughts please.

never heard of Woodstock back then dont think I had a tv at the time or was on the road signing up for jobs. and when I did see a Doc . om it was amazed at all the poeple. ya people came in and fed them but thats what America does all the time with countries that get hit hard by storms and valcanos we seem to be there first. But I think charity begins at home and the moneys and things we send there should start here with homeless and putting us back to work bring our jobs back home! would this create a woodstock ya think?

Exactly! Charity does begin at home BUT we need to get back on track and that means cut it to the bone and maybe help but not as much until we are back on track.

Not fully understanding what you were trying to say. I think that if people keep the word out about what the government is doing we may find the right person with the right voice to speak and be heard for a change.

Personally my friend, I think this overall does bring a lot of things into perspective and actually these are some of the better songs out there to consider when things around you just might be like you want them to be. Overall it has become too much about the Rose Colored glasses and refusing to look at things as they really are, and when another country needs help we are right there why the people of the US continue to get poorer, more hungry, and in need and no one wants to help them.

Yes, I enjoy these old tunes and they could give us all a good perspective on todays unrest. Several responses have mentioned the Us helping other countries and letting our people get poorer.

I do strongly agree. The ones in politics that are getting all that money need to take 6 months at least and live like most of the rest of the nation. I'm talking the ones on SSI, SSD, and small incomes. Many many people live on 30 to 40 hours of minimum wage jobs. That's what they have to live on. No one is there to bail them out, to bail us out! We don't have funds we can dip into to make ends meet or to live extravagantly. I have written so many letters to all the presidents, senator, and congress people. I have told them to do this, gave them a challenge to do this. I never get a response. They just send me email on propaganda and mass email. They never ever have address the issues I write to them about. We the American People need to clean house and get rid of all of the people in government and they need to be given a modest salary that they must do with. They have to stop dipping into this fund or another and start making it work with funds alloted for whatever. If You or I were CEO of a company and could not do what was asked of us with the money alloted for projects, where would we be? I'll tell you! We would be Fired no ands if's or butt's about it. As for Woodstock we do have a mimmick of this every year in a town close to us it's Manchester, Tn. Every summer they have a music festival that got it's start because of Woodstock and people wanting to get that back. It is called Bonaroo! Sorry for the long post but yoou hit on a sore spot for me.

But I think if we take on the attitude of some kids back 1969 and keep the ball rolling who knows what we could accomplish. I agree that if you or I were a CEO and could not do what was asked of us with the money alloted for projects, where would we be? I'll tell you! We would be Fired no ands if's or butt's about it. THis is exactly why I wrote this. We need to keep the attitude in our own circles alive and make people aware. Some people don't understand what crooks our government is and we need to make sure they do! SOmeone out there has the right voice and some people backing them and if we keep going we find him or her.

Probably, dear girl, one of the most inspirational and discerning discussion...I HAVE SEEN here in a long, long time! I cannot in all good consciousness comment fully, as I truly am not akin to the hardships, trauma and dilemnas you are facing--altho the triple down effect is being felt here in Canada, and I think we should take all your comments to heart, and stave the wave before it reaches us! I am really surprised at the SS payment...as here in Canuck land, if you are compelled to live on government dole..it is a meager $594. Wondering if that may be the "prod" that makes it a "very last resort" option? Great thoughts...appreciate your take on this "sad moment in history!"

GRRR!! Oh boy! Easy to tell with all the "typos" that I have been away for a while! Yes....I did mean "trickle" down! What happens in "BIG BROTHER" U.S.A. eventually happens in Canada! Our old age pension, combined with Canada Pension totals about $1294.00 per month, keeping in mind that nearly everything here is close to twice your price. Gas; $7.37 a gallon. Milk; $4.85 for 2 litres! A very pricey place to live.

Do you mean 'trickle' down affect? That would make sense. Here in the US if you are on benefits due to medical problems then you probably will only get about $600. But what I was talking about is retirement on social security and that is, on the average, about $1000 here in the US. After putting money in for about thirty years you'd better get more than $600! Thanks for your input.

I'm thinking that a little Woodstock never hurt anyone....why not? I agree about the salary point. Why shouldn't they have to live on the average salary?
