Mondays Should Be Banned

No matter whether or not I'm working I've always hated Mondays. Even the word sounds depressing, "Monday." "Friday" however, sounds completely different, don't you think? Monday is always a day I feel a bit depressed. For example, I know I'm doing good things with my new cooking regime BUT Mum pointed out on the telephone that I "should watch how much electricity and gas is being used." I'd not even thought about this before and, what with gas and electricity going up (again) I've only been thinking about myself and not the fact John has to pay the bills. He has changed energy provider and pays monthly now but those payments will definitely rise further if I carry on the way I am doing, especially during the winter when we have the heating on as well. It's so depressing having to think about these things. I can't just switch on the oven or hob whenever I feel like it. I am going to carry on with the healthier cooking BUT I shall have to cut down on the baking. Over weekend I made some amazing bread and have enough ingredients to make another one (Mum said if I'd got two loaf tins I could've made 2 at once) so once I have made loaf number two we shall have to go back to the shop-bought versions, I'm afraid. Just can't afford to make my own bread on a regular basis, unfortunately. The extravagant baking has to go too...or at least be resigned to the weekend. I do freeze food before anyone asks BUT I still have to cook it before it goes in the freezer, do you know what I mean? Oh, and my silver charm bracelet has been SOLD on Ebay but no-one wants to pay me for it. There is another bidder though so I may offer it to them, as I did this with my iPod recently. I've given the winner of the bid 24 hours to respond. Received another $1.13 from Acme Gpt though, which did actually cheer me up! Do you think Mondays should be banned? Should we call it by a different name to cheer us up or drop the day altogether so most people would only have to work 4 days instead of 5!

No matter what we would call it it would still be the same. I think Monday comes from "moonday" so why not look at Monday as a full moon, so romantic. So every Monday, sing the song "That's Amore." You know, "when the moon hits your eyes like a big pizza pie, that's amore...." Do something special every Monday so that you are actually looking forward to Monday and it will pass faster and soon it will be Friday again. lol

Moonday brings up this mental vision of lots of people all mooning out of car windows. Perhaps this'll give you something to smile about next Monday Janey ...

Yes, life is difficult for many at this time. I hope you situation changes for the better. Perhaps you need to find other places to earn online. This is what I am doing.

I guess I was feeling sorry for myself at my financial situation yesterday. Today I got out and about in the sunshine so my worries weren't so acute. Mind you, I'm only £13 or so into my £200 overdraft which is brilliant compared to most people!

Monday is just the same as any other day to me, no need to ban it! I think you'll find that your power usage for cooking could be reduced if you just used your oven more thoughtfully. No need to stop baking if you can work out how to cook several things at once, or use the residual heat to cook something else. Batch cooking is also an economical way to go, seeing as you have a freezer. And a slow cooker is a great bit of kit.

I think she got rid of her slow cooker. I really like mine and it is handy. Toaster oven is good for small things too.

Bad decision! I can't use mine just now as it's electric, but I loved it.

Yes, I did get rid of the slow cooker, but it was at a time when a) I needed the money and b) I wasn't cooking like I am now so didn't need one. Anyway, I don't think it would actually be big enough so it was a good decision, not a bad one, in my opinion.

Get a breadmaker! I got one several years ago and I've never bought shop bread since. The latest loaf will be ready to come out in 15 minutes time - I can smell the lovely smell of fresh - baked bread all the way upstairs. Non paying bidders are the bane of Ebay - fortunately, I've only had it happen to me a few times.

I shall offer my bracelet to the next bidder as I did that with my iPod and the guy who bought it was well pleased! Do breadmakers take up a lot of room? I'd be worried about that aspect plus my cupboards under the sink or now full of baking/cooking equipment so I'd be struggling to find room there. Mind you, there is a box full of nothing in particular right in the corner (also under the sink) so I guess it could go there. You can tell I'm justifying getting one, right? Haha!

It's not all that big and you can put it anywhere as long as there's a power socket handy. I use mine about twice a week - a 2LB loaf usually lasts me about 3 days, and on the fast setting takes only 2 hours and 20 minutes. So you could have fresh baked bread every day if you wanted to with no more bother than filling the pan. I will say though that it took me a few tries and several failures to get it right. I don't add salt for one thing, (it inhibits the yeast) and you need the rapid action yeast, not the regular dried yeast that you'd use if you were making bread the old fashioned way. Which you can obviously do anyway The only times that I've tried to make bread the old way it has not been all that successful with the resulting loaf tending to have something of the consistancy of a house brick.

Breadmakers really are worth the space. And i imagine it's something you'd use often.

I agree with mom that you could cook 2 loaves instead of just one, but if you make up enough for 4 loaves, since you already have the oven warmed up, just stick them in after the first 2 come out - and in the winter... it'll also help warm the house - no point in warming the whole house if you are just in one or two rooms most of the day (cooking).... and if you do a lot of cooking then you can just pull something out and warm it up at a later date... if you have a freezer (the large kind) then you can cook in the winter and just take things out to warm in the summer...

Our freezer is large but not American large. We do have them here now but ours is a smaller version of a fridge/freezer with the fridge at the top. It's adequate for our needs as there are only two of us. If I do get into cooking and freezing more I have some labels as my mother-in-law is notorious for freezing meat, etc and she's no idea what it is..so gives it to John!

But then Tueday would be Monday and then you'd have to ban that as well. Then poor Wednesday would be the first day of the week and that'd have to go to and so on and so forth. Better to use monday profitably and enjoy it.

It's like Mum received good news about her job last Friday. You just KNEW this would never happen on a dreary Monday. In fact, if she had had to go to that Employment Tribunal thingy that was on a Monday. How typical. Fortunately, she doesn't have to go now. If it were re-named that would be nice. What to though, I don't know.

There are many times when I have felt that way, especially since I have to return to work and always afraid if something New is going to be said that I have to worry about or make another phone call on. But mostly Mondays can't be helped. They are here whether you want them to be or not, so we just need to continue to make the Best of them.

Okay, about Monday . . . give yourself a fun goal or activity then it will be more cheerful, or at least assign a particular chore to get done, so it feels more purposeful. You have to choose your attitude. About the cooking and baking, etc. I know that I probably live somewhere where utilities cost less, but you had to be heating up those convenience foods somehow, so how is that different from making your own food from scratch? It is better if you do sequenced baking, or batch baking, that is true, because it does take the oven a while, and quite a bit of energy to heat up. An example would be to make a main dish, and once it is done, pop a dessert in. Put veggies in oven safe dishes and cook them while the meat is cooking if you have two racks. As far as not baking because you have to heat the house. . . if you are baking the heat goes to the kitchen anyway, and that is one less place to heat. Or, if you are baking, and no one else is there, just shut the heat off in the other part of the house and hang out in the kitchen and get stuff done there while it is toasty warm. Maybe you should reserve your baking for Monday, then it would be fun, serve a purpose and you could concentrate the extra heat usage to just one day. When you have baked all day, be sure, at the end, after the fire is turned off to leave the oven door open to release the heat into the house.

Sorry I've not replied until now (no idea why but my discussion replies are coming up as SPAM in my email notifications, other people's discussions are not..very weird). Anyway, you're right of course. Last Monday I set myself certain tasks to do and I was in a way healthier state of mind than I was yesterday. Today I've been better due to the fact I've been out shopping for supplies. The only depressing part came when I had to tot up what I'd bought in my head because I only had £10 to spend. If I'd bought the cheese (something I really wanted but actually forgot) no doubt I'd go over the £10 and I didn't want to use my Switch card as I'm overdrawn..don't want that to get out of hand. As regards cooking the processed food. The one positive from that experience was the cooker wasn't actually on for that long. In total about 45 minutes as it has to be pre-heated first. My pies, for example, take way longer than that as the meat needs to cook slowly on the top for an hour and a half, and that's before it goes in the oven. Oh well, at least I've got a few of those in the freezer so I don't need to make any for a while! I'm a bit annoyed about the cheese but never mind, we have some awful orange stuff to get rid of, so that will have to do.

Well here where I am at, the economy is getting bad, and they have already stopped working at the meat packing plant on Mondays, and they are only working 3 days a week ! Things are not looking good for this area, there are no other jobs ! But I agree with you on hating Mondays, they are really rough for me, because I have to work late on Sunday nights in a band at the club, and then I have to get up to go work, 5 hours later, but I guess that's what I get for liking money so much !

As much as I'm not always a fan of Mondays, I do find that sometimes they can be fun, and pleasant. However, whether they are pleasant or not, we all have to deal with them. We may not like it, but it's just the way that it is. We have to deal with the fact that Mondays exist.

Just as you said, I often hear many people say that they dislike Monday. I could totally understand the reason why they have such feeling. After enjoying a two-day weekend, it's not easy for them to change their condition of mind. They may have to spend more energy doing the work than they do in Thursday or Friday. So I don't think banning Mondays could solve this problem unless you ban the weekends at first, but I'm afraid few people would agree to this idea.

Mmm, I know the Germans are debating having siestas which would be great if they caught on here in the UK. My John works very hard but, to be honest, hasn't enough hours in the day when he only has half an hour for lunch and does loads of overtime!

If Mondays were banned we would come to hate Tuesdays. I remember when I was working offline I dread Mondays so what I use to do was call it my lazy Mondays where I did not do much at home in the evenings. This gave me a chance to settle down and only do cooking and school work with the kids. I still did those things the rest of the week but tried to do as little as possible at home on Mondays. I would then resume all other things the rest of the days.

With me I think it should be the other way round...keep myself busy on a Monday instead of having the day "off." I did this last week and felt much better than I have done this week. My energy levels are zero but at least I've been out in the sun, walking into Town and I'm glad I did that to keep me sane lol.

Monday, derived from the German word Montag, is pretty much the same as any day for me. I think you really like the word Friday as it sounds like food. That's why I like it, they could spell it Fryday, and cheer me up a bit.

I saw an advert a few years ago for Crunchie in which the line "Thank Crunchie it's Friday" always made me smile. I wish someone would come up with something similar for a Monday..it sounds too much like "moanday" doesn't it lol.

I totally agree with you. If i have had a good weekend then i am even more depressed when i even think of Monday. If we drop Monday then the thought of working for 4days would certainly cheer me up and then i would not be depressed when i think of Tuesday :)

My husband and I both work seven days a week so every day seems like a Monday to us LOL. I think they should rename all days to be more joyful.

That Monday sounds depressing or Friday may brings about a good luck is related to cultural tradition in your locality. Here we hate the number 13.There is no room 13 at many hotels.I think they are all man-made.Time is without feelings, only that people take it out on it when they are depressed.

You would not feel different if the word "Monday" gets banned.Lol You would still despise the other word that would they would come up as replacement. You would have to face and come to terms with it like others would do. Do something fun on a Monday so that you would not get depressed.. After work you can do some bowling or bingo so then you would call it "bowling Monday" or "bingo Monday", its just a suggestion though. Everyday is a blessing, make the most out of it.
