Most people including me like to eat some sweets or fruits after a meal.I read that it is because of a hormone I believe the name is seretonin or some such thing that gets released after we eat and our stomach gets full.I eat at least some candy sugar these days since I am supposed to be off sweets since I am trying to lose weight ( all the time thinking of cream filled pastries and Indian sweets dipped in desi Ghee).. However,no meal is really complete without dessert, fruits or sweets... Please do add your own views regarding this

Craving for sweets - Creamy and sweet
Hmmm, this sounds really interesting. So I just learned from you that this think called serotonin is responsible for my sweet craving after every meal. At least now I know and need not wonder why my mouth would really crave for even just a bite of something sweet whenever I'm done eating my meal. I always experience this and this is the reason why I always have stocks of something sweet in my fridge.

I think it is not serotonin. serotonin is a hormone that would initiate sleeping. Somehow it is just more psychological to eat sweets after eating a meal. It became a habit and we are used to it. Our taste buds are used to have sweets after meal. probably that's the reason why most people crave for sweets after eating.

I try to drink coca cola almost every after meal. I am now afraid that I am too acidic and/or diabetic. I really hope not. I just can't live without drinking once a day. I tried but I couldn't really get off it.

Hi choybel, I feel that drinking just one glass of coca cola or any other aerated drink may not be so bad especially if you are eating a healthy diet with enough vegetables and fruits. But just eating junk food like chips and savories with aerated water is definitely not good for the system - all the best and happy mylotting

LOL, it is in your hands to see that they dont kill you - all that is needed is self determination which is easy when you know that it is bad for you - all the best

I used to be really bad about this I always had to have something sweet after a meal. But then I found out I was diabetic. Since then I only have an occasional sweet. I don't eat sweets every day anymore. I have lost 24 pounds and work out every day, now I don't really crave the sweets like I used to. If I see something that looks really good though I might want some, I will have a bite or two and then be done with it.

Hi ladym,That's great losing 24 pounds is really an achievement. One needs to have a lot of self control and determination to do that.Of course having diabetes also spurs you on to lose weight! On the whole I guess we should be careful all through our life to see that we do not go beyond the healthy limits....I too am trying to lose weight since last year my BP went haywire and I was asked to lose weight...Have lost 3 kilos so far and have to lose another 4 -5 kilos.I love sweets and find it really difficult to keep away, so I do indulge once in a while...But on a daily basis I eat fruits when I have the urge...all the best

Hello! The scientific explanation of the craving for sweets is the excessive secretion of insulin into the blood from eating carbohydrates. that is the reason why the craving appears only after you eat a meal. some people after eating carbohydrates walking around most of the time with very high levels of insulin but their body does not respond to insulin properly, he is resistant to him and there for secretes more of it. this phenomenon called hifrainsolinmih and it causing increase of hunger, a specific desire for carbohydrates and sweets. The sulotion to this problem is to chose the right carbs. you need to eat carbs that absorbs slowly in the blood. an axample of right crabs: bulgur wheat, rice (especially basmati), oatmeal, peas, durum wheat pasta and corn. even most of the fruits are right crabs (beside watermelon, dates and dried fruits) and also some dairy products, including sweet yogurts. Good luck!

Hi vanila, lol I love crabs ....thanks a lot for sharing all the details which gives us a proper insight Most people try not to eat rice at night, just to reduce the carbohydrate intake...It is better to eat more vegetables and fruits and decrease our intake of rice and wheat to the bare minimum that is essential...all the best and happy mylotting

Hello Kiran ji, six tests available in whole. Sweet is one of them. For a complete meal we must add these six tests in our meal. Eating fruit is good habit after meal. In some state it is tradition to eat some thing sweet after meal. Gujrati adds sugar or Gur in their vegetables. I also like to eat some sweet after meal specially in winter.

For me it took lots of effort to control this habit.. LOL Now a days when at home I just avoid any sweets after meals cause it does not only make you gain weight but is also not so good for your teeth. Before when I had this craving I would just opt for some fresh yogurt with some jaggery it cuts on calories a bit as it's not that refined.

Hi kiran, so far I know to eat sweets or fruits after meal is good for health. But after dinner it is better not to eat fruits. If we eat fruits at night after meal it creates indigestion problem. It is better to eat fruits from morning to noon. After fifty sweets should b e avoided. Because sweets creates fats in the body.

Hello my friend Kiran. Unfortunately for me I cannot eat anything sweet after eating a meal. It has been like this all my life. I can either eat a meal or eat a desert. If I try to eat something sweet after a meal I double over in cramps. I have to wait at least a couple of hours. I had ulcers as a child so it may have something to do with that. I really don't know. But my stomach is small and I fill up on my dinner and maybe part of it is I enjoy my main meal so much that I fill up and adding that sweet treat is overload for my stomach. i told my husband I wished there were restaurants that just served sweets so we could go have a piece of cake or pie in other parts of the day when I am not eating my main meal. Have a wonderful day hon.

So that's what desserts are for. Interesting to know that it is caused by hormones. I never heard of that until now. My theory is that there is something in the taste buds that wants to contradict what you have eaten so that you will have a different after taste. I really don't know why would the tongue would like a different after taste. Maybe because of that hormone that you have mentioned.

Hi Gulaman, thanks a lot for sharing your views LOL I too would think so,....it is because of the harmone. Most people would love to eat sweets rather than eat the everyday meals which become monotonous..

I think I am a weird person! For me, I need a sweet before eating a meal. It's my favorite time to eat some candy because increase my wish to eat something salt. After a meal, I can eat something sweet, but it's not that necessary, I can live without the sweet after a meal.

I'm totally in the same boat as well! When I finish a meal, I would always have something sweet afterwards. There is always cake and biscuits stashed in the fridge and I eat a slice or two after lunch of dinner. It's these urges that I just can't resist. I just have to have something sweet in my mouth! lol! =)
