I'm sorry. I know there are fans of this but I'm not at the moment. Why? Because it won't stop the "Backup in Progress" that's why! And before you ask, yes I've tried everything..gone on forums, you name it, I've tried it and STILL the problem persists. How I loved XP. Life was so much simpler then lol. Even that is to be "discontinued" in a few months which beggar's belief really but Microsoft love annoying us with bad decisions. I find Windows 7 too fussy and about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. I'd love it if the likes of Firefox brought out an operating system to rival it. How cool would that be? Never gonna happen though. So, how do you find Windows 7? A pain or a gain?

I heard windows 8 is coming, but I just wish windows 7 would go on developing more. I have started loving it, and just have let go of the love for xp.

i have one issue about win7. xp has the ability to save audio files only with movie maker but win7 could not save audio files alone. you have to have at least one picture or movie clip.

I wonder if Windows 7 will last as long as XP? Probably not!

I recently got a new laptop with Win 7 on it. It was a gift from my hubby. I agree XP was really simple and with win 7, i am not much comfortable, may be i will find it better as days goes on. I face problems especially in compatibility, in installing my applications which requests for higher versions and upgrade. I am making my hands on Win 7, hope i may like it in future!

I can tell you're not going to give up easily with Windows 7 and I admire your determination to succeed. It is different from XP, you're right. Because loads of people liked XP but disliked Vista you would think Microsoft would've listened to its customers and just..well, tweaked XP a bit. Why change something if it works? Beats me!

I also have my issues with Windows 7! It is very picky. I've had to create new profiles so I could use my computer. There were some authorization violations on the original profiles, now I can't even acces my files. I have to schedule it to get it fixed, as I am not a computer whiz. XP was a lot simpler, and a lot better!

Give it time and I'm sure you'll learn to love it. I have just redecorated my win7 and now I'm just so proud of it.

Two ends of the Windows 7 spectrum there! I guess what works for one doesn't always work for another but I hope you get the problem sorted bounce58 as I'm not a computer whiz either, to be honest. What's annoying me now is whenever I type colour (as an example)it gets underlined because of the American version. If I type color it doesn't! I'm a Brit in case they hadn't noticed!

I'm not an IT specialists or something, but people still using XP don't necessarily need to upgrade unless they have to. Well, Windows XP is going to be obsolete sooner or later like it or not. There are still people using Windows Vista as well, which I never dwell. In other words, I never have a computer or laptop running Vista. Pretty soon, there will be new Windows OS as long as Microsoft is in operation. What you always can do is giving your rant to this big corporation. Just tell the ones that create Windows 7 how sucky it has been, lol. If millions of people are complaining how sucky it is, whoever working on the next OS will work on what could improve. Do you always backup your computer everytime you turn it on? G.

You may have already find solutions for this. Once everything is up, just research on how to turn it off for sure and find better ways to back up.

I have heard several say they really enjoy windows 7, but to be honest with you I totally hate it. I don't like the way it runs at all. I find it to be way too slow for me. I prefer my XP and will use it until no one decides they cannot support it any longer. lol

Would it be dangerous for me to uninstall Windows 7 and install XP? I had XP on my other computer but this one came with Windows 7 so I've been stuck with it. I prefer XP. Far more simple to use and I envy you for still having it. As far as I know tech support will cease in 2012 sometime I think, which is a ludicrous decision on Microsoft's part. Why they just couldn't tweak it instead of bringing out brand-new systems is beyond me. To compete with Apple, perhaps?

So true jazondo. XP will sometime in the near future be obsolete, so a lot of the newer hardware is not being supported. The only way to successfully do this is taking it to someone who can work out the kinks, so to speak and get all needed to support it. There will be several professionals who perhaps will not be able to do this so it might have to be done by someone, friend, type IT person and or you are savvy enough to really scour the net and find the necessary drivers.

You may not be able to install Windows XP on a computer that came with Windows 7... There is a lot of newer hardware that isn't supported by Windows XP, and you'd probably end up being in a lot worse shape. ;(

Well, I got to admit Janey, that I have found Windows 7 more stable than XP. I didn't upgrade though. My old XP machine burned its motherboard - far too expensive to repair. I got a tower-only computer from one of the E-bay traders - half the price of my old XP that I got from the high street. Anyway I digress... Windows 7 was already installed and I recieved the original disk and not just a "fix it" disk as with XP. My machine now is more powerful with quad processor and lots of RAM. A few years back I updated to Windows ME from 98 on an old machine, but had loads of problems and went back to 98 - which in my opinon, was a terrible operating system, always crashing. I read on the net recently, that Linnux is a good operating system and runs with virtually no crashes or problems at all. Maybe I'll try that sometime in the future, but for the moment, I will stick the microsoft. Amazing really what we do put up with! _Derek

I think we should start an online petition calling for Firefox to develop an operating system. Macs are way too expensive and I use the Firefox browser all the time..so..come on Firefox, get your finger out! John told me Netscape were a big player at one time but, due to Microsoft's dominance I don't think they even exist anymore. Would be nice to have a choice, wouldn't it? On PCs anyway.

I have been using windows 7 for awhile now, no problems so far. Have you tried updating your version to the service pack 1. I'm guessing there were bugs before which the update fixed and what you are experiencing could be one of it.

I do have automatic updates but I will take a look on the Microsoft website later on, see if there is anything the updates don't cover (which, knowing Microsoft), there will be. Thanks.

I have been using Windows 7 for the last 3 months or so and find that it works great. It is not as busy as XP was and seems to be more efficient along the lines of the Linux system which I had before. XP seemed to have way too many programs attached to it that I never used and they just took up extra space. I think Windows 7 is more streamlined and just seems to work better. I was used to XP in the old days, but things kept going wrong with it which is why I gave up on Windows and went to Linux for a couple of years.

I am using Windows 7 and the first time I used it I instantly fell in love with it! I used Vista for a few months before W7 was released, so I already adjusted from XP - Vista. I haven't experienced anything about "Backup in progress".

I usually do a manual version that involves discs. Every month I was doing this and it got a bit tedious, which is why I chose the automatic version that uses my second hard-drive. Well, my guess is that there isn't enough memory on that hard-drive for what the back-up wants to do..but it keeps trying instead of giving up. I hope you understand what I mean. It does my head in thinking about it lol.

I like xp than window 7 why? Because window 7 is not stable as xp but I believe it will be stable soon plus window 7 consumes huge amount of ram while xp only consumes 128 mb of ram which you can perform a lot of task than window 7. The only bad thing in windows xp is there is no online support from microsoft but I love using xp.

Yes recently there's been a lot of complaints about win7 from many a users around.I too tried upgrading my xp sp 2 to win 7 and was trying out how it is.My first experience in what what i saw was the memory thing. It eats up a lot of your cpu memory.Second it displays everything is faster overface but the RAM gets congested in the background which slows down if you are into online net working specially. The system won't prompt you or alert you for backup or update. It goes on its own which updates by itself without your knowing ,which drastically slows down your networking really. So, i don't know about other users and their opinions, but for me it is a pain than a gain.

You've expressed my point perfectly there my friend. I didn't know about the RAM but, thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Microsoft have always been guilty of providing "updates" that we don't really need but the back-up thing is really annoying me now. My computer is fairly new but if it wasn't it would probably die with all its exertions!

I tried XP - Vista - Win7. I loved Windows XP since it's so easy to use and it's fast. Since most end-users are using it, support is everywhere on the net so it's easy to find a fix if something happened to it. Vista, well, I simply HATE Vista :P Windows 7 is perfectly fine for me. Most are complaining that Windows 7 runs really slow but if you increase the memory speed/RAM of your machine, it will definitely run accordingly. Also, lowering the graphics a bit would help a lot. In all, I prefer Windows 7 since quite a lot of our users are using Windows 7 most are also moving from XP to 7 since Microsoft, in some time, will stop supporting XP to concentrate on Windows 7. What I love most about Windows 7 is the User Admin/Security Feature as well as the auto-restore and auto-save point. So far I've been using Win7 for 3 years now and I haven't formatted or encountered any problems yet :)

Hello and welcome to MyLot. I can't understand why Microsoft has this huge market share. I wonder if they bought other companies out? Probably! I agree with you. Even XP had its problems but not early on in its usage like I seem to have with 7. Oh, well. If hubby wins the lottery he can buy me a Mac!

It took me a long while to get used to XP and I skipped Vista. 7 is okay, and I have not encountered that problem. Everytime I get anything new, however, like Firefox 6, what ever it is tries to take over the entire computer and I never know why. I now have Bing and MSN come up as my home page. I never asked for that. I think Firefox 6 did it, but a little box is now congratulating me on my new Dell computer (nine months old.)

Mmm, I used to get Bing, etc, installed when I didn't want it and figured out that you have to untick a box at the beginning, then it doesn't load. Hope this helps.

I've had no problems with W7. and as for the back - up, I solved that by not specifying a location for it to back up to! It keeps sending me messages telling me that "No backup location has been specified" but I can live with that. I liked XP a lot but I think that W7 is better and much better than Firefox which, despite all the upgrades continues to be crash prone.

I love Firefox but the latest version seems to me more buggy than the previous one. I can't understand why they're in a hurry to upgrade on what seems to be a weekly basis now! Firefox 5 was the best, I loved it but now it's 6..or is it 7 lol. I've lost count!

I know very little about windows 7. Right now I'm using Vista, but everyone I knows say they pitty me because I've got vista. Now your problem may not be with the OS itself, but without full details I don't know what to tell you. There could be many reasons it's frozen like that, and I'm sorry you're having trouble solving this annoying issue.

Even the boffins at Microsoft all come out with the same thing so I follow the instructions and the problem still remains. Hubby did a scan for me the other day, using our McAfee Security and that's helped a lot (not slow anymore) but that pesky "Backup in Progress" icon continues to annoy me. I think it's searching for extra memory on the second hard drive and there isn't enough, so it just goes round and round in circles instead of just giving up and stopping!

Acoording to me Win 7 is the best ever windows operating system and vista is the worst of it. Also my Xp OS used to crash every month. SO i think you can opt for manual backup. Also see if the problem is due to a hardware fault. You can contact the tech support for solving your problem, They might lead you in aright direction.

My in-laws have Vista but have had their fair share of problems with it. Having said that though, they're not exactly "technical" so it may be them at fault, not the machine itself. Good luck in whatever you decide.
