Be Careful with Eating Papaya

I have a neighbor who is living with her daughter alone next door. She was worried for sometime now about her daughter for she has this eating problem and according her it's unusual and thought it was some appetite problem too. She doesn't want to eat any of the food that her mom prepares for her and so the mommy resorted on to feeding her with papaya which is the kid's favorite fruit. It went on for the next 5 days because that's the only thing she'd eat. Later that week, we noticed that the girl's skin all turned yellow! It was scary and we thought that it was Hepatitis. So we went to the doctor right away for a check up and learned that it was because of papaya. She was adviced to drink lots of water and eat balance food. Lesson learned: Papaya is good for the body for it contains Vitamin C and E and is a good antioxidant. But don't ever eat it on a daily basis. :)

Oh I did not know that. I eat papaya everyday. I eat lots of fruit to begin with and I see no discoloration on my skin or stuff similar to that. I guess that resulted because she was not taking in water. I know that eating tons of carrots can also give you an orange glow.

Yes, that's what made the girl all yellow coz it's the only thing she'd eat in that time. But she's all okay now.

Anyway, I ever ate Papaya on a daily basis, and yet my skin hadn't turn yellow I think the main point here is the balance! I guess it is because she was only eat papaya for 5 days. I think if someone can eat another good and balanced foods, then eating papaya on daily basis would be all okay

You have the point. You may be eating it on a regular basis with just a small amount. True, balance food diet will not turn out to this kind of situation. Happy myLotting!

Hello Dear Ronadelle! Thanks for sharing the interesting information! I think it is not good to have a particular thing as a staple food! this could have happened with any fruit, if the balanced diet is not provided and only the fruit is taken in as a source of food! Thus we should always keep in mind that any thing in excess is dangerous! Balanced diet is a must for our body ! It should have proper amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fats together with required micro and macro minerals and vitamins. Thus we should remember that fruits should form one of the constituents of the food ingredients we take and they should be a part of our balanced diet and they should never become the primary source of food! Thanks to the doctor who diagnosed the ailment soon and prevented the girl from further incurring further loss to her body! We need to be careful and make our children understand about the importance of the balanced diet and encourage them to have all the food materials in moderate quantities to form a balanced diet! Today even junk foods are also causing lot of problem in the children! Thanks for the informative discussion!!!!

What a story. The same effect you can have after drinking few litters of carrot juice during the winter. If you drink carrot juice during summer your skin will have great colour thank to the carotene and sun. But during the winter sun is limited and carotene will gather in our skin.

I see, that's interesting but you know it's always sunny and hot here in our country. I think the girl really just ate papaya way too much.

Hello Ronadelle. This deliciously fruit was called for Christopher Columbus the fruits of the angels, and I agree with it. Papaya besides that have a great flavor, is a very good source of prevention of decease like atheroesclerosis and diabetic heart decease,It has acid folic and a good source of fiber. But like everything when is eat it too much becomes bad for our health. For example I found out that if eat too much beet, our skin will become pink or red,I tried one time because I am too much yellow. But what we have to do is teach our kids to eat different kind of food, how? begin with small portions and vary everyday.

Oh wow, didn't know this bad aspect of papaya. Btw my mom eats it on a regular basis and have never saw this side effect on her perhaps reason is that she also drinks lots of water through out the day and so her skin is quite healthy and young. Maybe, it's the excess which is prone to bring out that effect but whatever thanks for sharing and I hope that kid learned her lesson! ;)

hi ronadelle people do get carried away and then go off on the other direction. I do not think she would turn yellow again if she ate this papaya with a lot of other foods. what happened is she got an overdoes of beta carotene and could have got the same thing if she had ate nothing but carrots too. so you do not throw out the papayas just because she acted like a little fool, you just eat a small portion in with other foods. it was the excess of the vitamin that turned her skin yellow.you can eat it daily but a small portion only.what fools these mortals be is a wise quote no matter who the quoter was.we also need water every day but if we drink say four gallons in one day it could kill you yet we are not forbade drinking water everday. portion control always. you can overeat any food but that does not mean in the correct portion its bad for you. ever hear of the words COMMON SENSE? s

I'd like to make it clear that yes, she was overdosed with beta-carotene. I've already said that I was mistaken with the previous people who responded earlier or may have exaggerated the last line of this discussion. I also said that it's really not that harmful. I get your opinion positively. You have the right to say it.

It's the same thing with carrot and other foods with high level of carotene like papaya, sweet potato, squash etc. This is because carotene stores itself in the skin. However if you don't eat too much and eat nothing but these carotene rich food you will not turn yellowish at all. A balance diet is always important. And it is also important to drink at least 6 to 9 glasses of water everyday to wash away excess carotene.

Nothing eaten as the only food in someone´s diet is good. I don´t think papaya is specially bad. It is just that the girl ´s diet was completly unbalanced. I would make the girl eat what the normal dish has or stay at the table until she finishes it. That´s how I was raised and we did not have eating problems.

There are lots of good and healthy food that, if eaten in excess, will do harm. One of them is the very healthy carrot. It seems papaya is another. Happy posting!

Hi Ronadelle. That condition is what you call carotemia meaning excess carotenoids in the system. Not only does this hold true to papayas but this can also hold true to eating too much mangoes.

Is that the same with beta-carotene? That's what the doctor said to us. Fruits that are high in beta-carotene, if taken excessively leads to skin discoloration. I hope that it's the same. I appreciate another helpful insight from you!

From my understanding, papaya is rich with Vitamin A which we need it for our vision during the night. However, papaya is a kind of fruits and it just can be our supplementary food only. You sharing is good to educate us too because I an not aware of this sickness before.

Hi there aeiou78.It's not actually a sickness, the child's skin changed colour because she ate so much of this particular fruit...that's all. There are no ill effects here. The message is that we should always have a balanced diet. Remember too the adag..."moderation in everything". Anything we take in excess is not good for us.

I hope it is really not a sickness for short and long terms. Shall I consider it as unhealthy or symptom because our complexion has turned into abnormal color, yellow ?

Hello aeiou78, MsTickle is right. It's not an illness. It's only the side effect but it's never harmful. ;)

The yellowing is caused by nothing more than beta-carotene which is found in Papaya, it's not that harmful from a medical stand point but rather unsightly, so what does these tell us? Too much of everything is bad and that anything in excess would show adverse effects in many forms and that there is no substitute for a balance diet, papaya is good but eating nothing more than papaya would of coarse show in the out ward,so that make it bad, it's an indicator that you are having too much of a good thing

Experienced it. Learned my lesson and rarely touch papayas now. A year ago, I use to eat papaya fruit on a daily basis. And literally, I could sometimes eat a whole papaya everyday. This went for about a few months and my skin started to turn really yellow. My friends started calling me the Simpsons. When the doctor saw me, he thought I had hepatitis. Apparently, papaya is good for you but too much vitamin A could poison you. I've stopped eating it now but I do crave it now and then. =)

:) You can still eat papaya but make sure that you don't eat too much. I'm sure you love it that you can eat a whole papaya back then. That will really yellow you skin. Since it's a lesson for you, just eat enough. Happy myLotting!

In the US they used to warn us against feeding too many carrots for the same reason. It is the carotene in the orange colored fruit or vegetable. Not dangerous, but not attractive at all.

I guess thats why they say to only eat things in moderation. I think its the same with anything. Just eating one thing isnt healthy you need to eat a variety of things. If you eat carrots like crazy your skin will turn orangeish. My daughters skin turned yellowish when she was a baby because she ate squash a lot. She ate other things to but apparently it was enough squash that it turned her skin yellowish.

Dear Ronadelle, Your main topic discussion is an informative one. I was not aware that the papaya fruit is somehow harmful if we eat it everyday. Nevertheless, as they say, anything that is too much can bring a bad effect to us. Not only in foods but also in other things that we use.

It was perhaps because of eating that fruit alone without other foods to supplement the nutrients needed by her body that resulted in such. Although fruits are foods good for the body, still a single fruit does not contain all the nutrients or vitamins to nourish the body. If we concentrate on eating only a single type of fruit or food, nutritional imbalance may happen and this will surely have an adverse effect on the individual's health.

Carrots have the same effect as papaya. There is no harm in eating papaya on a daily basis the only effect will be orange skin because the papaya is orange This happened to me before, my palms and underneath my feet became orange afer eating lots of carrots everyday.
