Mot people these days seem to be doing that.they sit in front of the TV with their laptops or have positioned the TV in such a way as to be able to watch it while using the computer...I do it and am not sure if it is doubly harmful to my eyes...I watch news and a couple of Kannada(local language) serials at night while I am using the internet...I feel that it may be added strain for our eyes doing both these activities together, what do you all think?

Ushaji, namastey I have a mirror on the wall just above my computer monitor, the big screen tv is on the opposite wall, so i can see the tv news , movies etc in it, the tv is 12 feet away from the monitor, means the image i see in mirror is 24 feet away, guess it is less harmful.. Thanks for sharing Best of luck. Professor

Hi professor, that is unique way of watching TV...However, i feel that watching TV is far less harmful than using the computer and the internet..But then there is no getting away since we have to use both...We have to do both in moderation ! thanks a lot for sharing your views and happy mylotting

Wow, what a technique.. That is cool, I just heard and think about it now. I guess it means we can reduce the radiation from our TV monitor.. Nice share!

Yes, I watch TV while working or playing on my computer. I never considered that it might add strain to my eyes. This is new to me. My problem is that I am not giving my full attention to either. I mostly give my attention to my computer while listening to the TV rather than watching the TV. But I get distracted by something on the TV and stop giving full attention to my computer. Or I begin watching a good movie or program on TV but get started on the computer and miss something that I was watching on TV. It would probably be better to do one or the other. If I am watching TV, don't work on the computer or shut the TV off when I am on computer. But we are a multi-task society and I have gotten into it also. Sometimes less is more.

Hi phil, thanks a lot for sharing your views It happens to me as well, most of the time I am concentrating on the comp and listening to the Tv occasionally watching what is actually happening on the Tv...I agree ! most of us are doing multitasking these days and it is only natural that we do it even while browsing...either listen to music or watch TV..

Well actually I do it. There are times I can't resist watching TV and browsing the net at the same time. Like when I was watching the Ms. Universe I could not help but watch the TV while browsing on the net. I think this really consumes much energy and yes this strains the eyes even more so I don't do this very often.

Well dear it could be possibly true. If you do it regularly then you will get so acquainted and things will be easier for you. I know many people who do that on a regular basis and they seem to find no problem at all.

Hi salonga, I guess when you do both the activities together once in a while it may seem to be more strenuous. However, once you do it on a daily basis it does not seem so, since you learn to balance out...all the best and happy mylotting

I can't just do one thing anymore, I have to multitask or I get bored. I enter Sweepstakes on my Laptop while watching shows I've recorded on our DVR. In between that, I text my son and play games on my husband's phone.

Hi Kiran.. I guess overdoing anything can cause the problem. Otherwise its okay. I am doing it daily. I mean I used to see movies on TV with surfing on the net. Yes I guess it is becoming common everywhere as I have seen many people here doing computer in front of TV.

I agree akp, I m doing it now, watching serials and also using the net. However,I have noticed that when I am using both i tend to feel less stressed since my attention gets diverted and that somehow reduces the stress level. The only bad effect is that I tend to get a slight stiffness in my neck because I have to keep myself in a certain position to watch TV LOL...

Watch television too long OR Browsing on computer too long OR Do both, I think all of them may harm our eyes.. ^^; Generally, our eyes need to be rested. Staring at monitor (either computer or TV) too long may harm it. Well, anyway, personally, I don't like to do both activities together, since I can't being focus if I do it simultaneously, so it would be less fun .

Hi varier, thanks a lot for your response I am sure that both the activities cause strain to the eyes . However, I feel that doing both the activities together may not cause even more strain since we distribute our attention...

Yes that is true, at times we do get a headache....the other thing is that you may type what you are watching sometimes and may not realise until you post it LOL...just a thought, thankfully, not happened to me so far ...

Yes, it might harm our eyes, but I don't think it would be more dangerous than just doing one of them . Well, about distribute my attention, I think the one that might be harmed is my head. Sometimes, doing two things simultaneously make me got headache

Hi iran8, I would like to watch my favorite tv program while online. This would happen only when I'm surfing net in my bedroom for the tv and hifi sets are placed in our bedroom. Most of the time I spend my online time in the sitting room. Although there isn't any tv there I still can enjoy watching free internet movies or tv series and doing online browsing at the same time It's sure that this would affect the concentration on doing either one lol... As what I know it's not good for our eyes if we focus on the computer screen for long time. So I think watching tv in front of us at least could let our eyes having some exercises and free from concentrating on the same screen Happy posting

Hi Ikbooi, It is the same with me, when I am online , one of the serials that I like to watch gets telecast . Anyway, TV serials do not need absolute concentration, so can easily be managed along with the computer ...what you tell about our eyes getting some exercise does make sense ! all the best

Hi kiran! I used to watch tv while surfing the net when my desktop was still positioned beside the tv. My mother always nagged me about it because it's bad to the eyes. I'm not sure if it's true but I guess it is because it puts more strain to the eyes. And then, I stopped the habit because I could not focus on each and I find it tiring to the eyes looking at two different monitors with different brightness. Now, I don't have my desktop anymore but I've got my netbook. I don't use my netbook while watching tv or the other way around. I just watch my favorite dramas in the internet by downloading them.

I think it's good to keep looking away from the screen instead of just staring at it without a break. I'm a bit worried that it's bad for my attention span instead though!

Yeah, I do that everyday too.. but not at the same time.. I use the computer for a few hours, then when I am not using it I just watch tv...I think it is harmful because of the radiation..and too much of it can definitely ruin the eyes.. You should only use them moderately and have some rest..

I do this every day. I think the biggest problem of do this is that I don't have my focus in one thing, so I lost some parts of the TV show that I am seeing and/or I have difficults to do simple things in computer. But as I have so little free time at my home, if I don't do this, I will not have time to see my personal e-mails, enter in mylot and see my sports on TV. This is a problem of modern life. But I think watch TV as bad as use the computer for too long time, because your eyes don't have time to rest. Don't you agree? Happy mylotting

Hi Kiran! I feel that our mind is not tuned to attending to two task at a given point of time. If we are using internet or we are on our PC and TV is also on, we could concentrate on either of the two. This sometimes happen with me also, when am doing something on my mobile and TV programmes are also going on, however, I just can concentrate on mobile and my mind does not register, what is going on in the TV programme. It is really harmful to attend to task simultaneously, and it will surely put strain in our eyes.

Hi deepak, I agree that we are not able to do full justice to two different activities at the same time. In my own case Tv serves as a background sound and I am taking in what is being spoken and occasionally look up and see what is happening on the Tv screen...I guess there is a certain amount of strain to the eyes...enjoy your evening

Hi kiran, my common sense says, watch TV and work at laptop or desktop computer at the same time is harmful for eyes. Because it creates stress on eyes. Moreover if you put your laptop on your lap is very harmful for health. The radiation from laptop can affect your body directly.

Hi bhanu, I have heard many people say that about the laptop, but when I ask the computer experts they say that it is not harmful if you have it on your lap for a short period of time.I keep shifting mine, placing it on the mattress for sometime etc;I guess there is no easy solution to this since one would want to use the comp and also watch Tv, just have to be careful and use in moderation...

I am on the computer while the television is on. I don't have a laptop so I am on my home PC when I do this. My PC is facing the other direction so if I want to watch tv I have to turn around! If I had a laptop I would be sitting in front of the tv doing both!
