Hitching a Ride

Yesterday, as I was entering the highway, there was a fellow on the side of the entrance ramp with a cardboard sign that read, "I don't stink." I thought it was rather funny as he stood there with his dufflebag and backpack waiting for someone to pick him up. Hitching a ride in our state is against the law so he was in an area where he could see the police prior to their getting to his standing place. What's the most interesting sign you've seen as hitchhikers stood waiting for someone to pick them up?

I have seen all kinds of signs from them too. I forget what they said though. I never pick up a hitchiker. It is just too dangerous, especially these days.

Is a good way to get killed. This guy was clean cut looking but still no way I'd give a stranger a ride. Thanks for responding and hope you had a great day.

Hitching is not common here in our place and is considered dangerous. In any case someone will ask for a ride I won't take risk. Have a good day

Dangerous here too. Years ago I use to see females hitching a ride but don't see that any longer. Thanks for responding.

That's pretty funny! I wonder how many states hitchiking is ilegal in. I have no idea if it is illegal here. I've never hitchhiked, but I've been walking home because of a broken down car and people have stopped to offer me a ride. I don't think I'd ever take the chance of hitchhiking. I wonder if he ever got a ride.

I happen to go by the same area the next day and he was gone so either he got a ride or was warned by the police to move. Thanks for responding.

I don't think I've ever seen a hitchhiker holding a sign. They've always just had their thumb out. I didn't know it was illegal anywhere to hitch a ride. I can't imagine anyone picking up a hitchhiker these days. It is just too dangerous.

I totally agree but I have seen truckers pick them up. Generally I see signs but the sign usually lists the final destination. Thanks for responding.

haha wow people come up with the funniest things but hey at least he is letting you know straight up what state do you live in that it is illegal to hitch a ride? i think that is a stupid law i have the upper most respect for police but i think they have no right to say who i can and cannot pick up in my car i understand it is dangerous but i think i should be able to make that call on my own the funniest sign i seen was a hobo man holding a sign on the street corner saying "family was kidnapped by ninjas...need money for karate lessons" but his words were all mispelled like a true bum haha

i'm not sure whether hitching a ride here is against the law or not and i never encounter anybody trying to hitch a ride before... but to be really honest with you, i won't allow any stranger to hitch a ride in my car as the world is getting crazier and scarier nowadays and i don't know what type of people i will be associating with... safety is always number one for me and it is better to be safe than sorry... take care and have a nice day...

I have only had the typical signs! Like will work for gas....or we're down on our luck. It is also against the law to hitchhike here in our state. We had a couple down by our Walmart saying they needed gas money....well someone called the Salvation army to help them. Turns out they has a brand new SUV parked about two blocks away. And they weren't really broke. It was how they chose to work!

How sad someone would take advantage of the public. The poor people that really need help are the ones I feel so sorry for and wish I could help. Thanks for responding.

Well in our place, written signs are rather uncommon. The trend here would be to hide in the bushes while your prettiest or most good looking friend will waive her hitch hiking hand sign. Then when the car stops all of you hiding will jump out and ride with your friend. lol.

I haven't seen any signage as funny as you just encountered, because I don't have a car. But in the Philippines, if ever someone wants to get a hitch, they just wave their hands as sign to pull over. Then, the hitchhiker talk to the driver and ask if he can have a lift. That's Philippines, that's how we get a hitch.
