Is The Internet Becoming Boring? Will Anything Replace It?

Sometimes I sit here and think, "I'm bored" even though I have a computer that works fine, I have no problems (like many do) of logging onto the internet and browsing but.. I dunno..it's all a bit "samey" isn't it? I suppose it depends on what you are using the internet FOR. I quite liked it when it was all very basic and new without broadband to make it all go faster. Now it's all becoming rather elaborate, memories on computers are getting larger and I'm wondering where it's all leading. Or am I just being picky?

Yes if one frequents the same sites day in day out I suppose it can get a bit like a drag. One has so many avenues to explore online that I can't see me being bored from it. Not picky maybe just one of those days where perhaps some things don't seem interesting today.

There are times, when I might get a little bored of being online, but it doesn't really happen very often. I usually don't get tired or bored very often of being online. It's not that easy for me.

I only felt that MyLot was the most productive site for me (mainly for my well-being) but, since I signed up for an online course this will help me find employment, hopefully. So I guess the internet isn't all bad.

There are times I feel like this about the internet. It's just an information overload! And anything and everything is already online. So, there isn't anything surprising or ingenious anymore. Even if you have an idea which you think is unique, you go online and a lot of people has done it already.

I have already been bitten with computer, even though I have aching back and neck if I play it too long. But then, what can I do ,if don't play it? Do I play the Erhu (I mentioned it before)or read all day ?With the lapse of time, computer becomes more and more advanced.Personally I hardly do other thing with it except email ,searching and blog.

I do agree that the internet is a really good educational tool. I get email updates from Greenpeace (amongst others) to let me know of a new person I can send a campaigning email to. The internet can be very powerful (in a good way) and has revolutionised the way people complain about things!

I think there are many here who can relate with this one. There are many times when I find myself online, if I am not in the mood to really be posting here in myLot that I find myself BORED and wondering what else there is to do. I mean there are sites like Facebook I can also log into and play some of the games and such there, or other sites, etc. all the time here to check out and Email but sometimes I just wish for something more. Maybe then it's just time to log off away from here and go do something else.

Yes, this is the main reason why I've got into cooking a lot more. I found that I was on my computer for the sake of it and not really doing anything constructive. It's always nice to visit MyLot though, I'm sure you will agree.

It does help, I agree. It's nice when you find a site that pays too - on a regular basis.

Hi Janey.. I know what you mean. I get odd days of wondering why I bother with the Internet, but then the next day the mood has disappeared. I have blogs and a website and then places like Facebook and e-mails to answers. So with me it is just a transient feeling that comes and goes from time to time. _Derek

Hi Derek. A bit like when it's crap on telly lol. I absolutely LOVE telly when there's something like "Frozen Planet" to look forward to. However, that doesn't happen very often. It's nothing new though as - judging by the stuff I wrote in my 1980s diaries, telly used to frustrate me then as well. John has ordered a Samsung dongle £20 cheaper on Amazon so it will be interesting to see how this Smart TV works. It's great having something to look forward to and yes, I know it's a possession as in, new telly and Sky+ HD but, let's face it, in this dreary climate telly is the only thing that stops us from going to bed at 8pm lol.

Hello, Janey. I don't find the internet boring at all, but then I use it more for research than just passing the time. I write a lot - usually 2 - 4 articles each day, and even if it's a topic I know a lot about, it usually involves at least some research. When I get really interested in something, I can spend ages just reading and skipping from link to link. Yesterday I was doing a couple of Shakespeare character analysis articles. One was Joan of Arc, and I really got into reading about her. The other was Lord Talbot, and again, he was a really interesting person in his own right, aside from the play in which he appeared - Henry VI Part I - so it took me nearly all day to do a couple of articles which should have taken between 2 and 3 hours. I suppose I'm really saying it depends what you want from the internet. If you're just surfing, it can all become a bit samey, but if you're actually researching something, no matter what the subject, you can become really absorbed in it.

Hiya Sandra. Yes, I do know what you mean about researching. I did that with my Family Tree a few years ago and got REALLY absorbed in that, I must say. At least it's faster than it used to be, which helps. Poor John needs a new Mac though as his is kinda obsolete now, which is really annoying..for him at least. I'm actually better at buying stuff online than I am in real life as it's so much easier to research prices via the internet rather than going from shop to shop. We did this with our new telly (that my FIL is kindly purchasing for us) as the one we picked was a Web Exclusive on the Comet website and could only be ordered ON THAT WEBSITE, rather than from the shop. We're taking a chance with it as it's not on offer anywhere else, therefore no reviews anywhere..but it's exciting all the same waiting for something we've wanted for so long.

Not now at least. I think that there are times where doing the same things, every day on the Internet, that can get a bit dull. Which just means that its just time to mix it up, visit different websites or do things in a different order than you normally do. But, I would not say that the Internet in general is getting boring, not by a long shot. Now will anything replace it? Well, yes, some day. I mean, who could have ever seen the Internet blowing up the way it did? I doubt any of us could have seen the Internet coming. It is just really something that has caught many of us completely off guard. There will be something far more insane than our craziest dreams. The most insane is yet to come with technology. Just strap in and enjoy the ride, I guess.

The internet becomes boring if it is used and looked upon as a toy. If someone uses the internet for games and other stuff for pleasure, then he will eventually get tired of it. The internet is supposed to be a tool, or a communication equipment. If it is something that we use for our comfort, then there is no sense how it will become boring. And there is no other alternative to the internet.

I do love buying things on it, I must admit, especially for other people. For example, my Mum lives 100 miles away and it's her neighbour's birthday shortly, so she rang me and asked me to order a Trugg (carries bits from the garden) from Amazon on her behalf. I like doing this as there is no way Mum would be able to find one in a "shop." Online shopping is easier in this regard as browsing for "stuff" is half the fun!

i don't think can be replaced by anything.. without that nothing works and people will go mad without it.. we can get more knowledge through internet and there is no point of boring here...

well if you are getting bored of internet then i guess you are looking at wrong places :). I personally feel internet is so huge that you can always find something interesting on it and I personally believe that. I am a web developer and I find a huge amount of information regarding my field on internet which I feel I would not have learned if I was not aware of internet. Plus there are several other topics on which I find so much information. I have passion in photography and I found a lot of information and reference regarding photography and how to enhance your skills.

Yes, it does help when you have another interest, so to speak. I've done a lot more cooking lately due to finding really good recipes on the internet. However, the best ones of all are passed down the family line, as in my case, as web sites tend to be way too fussy about ingredients. The photography thing sounds really good though. Excellent!

i still love the internet as it is. I do not get bored with it... not yet as of this time because i am not using it for facebook only, or i am not using it for the same old boring stuffs we see all over the net. I like the internet for mylot, for the chance of having an extra income source, online... :D and well i sure am not bored with mylot, and so far i have equated internet means mylot... hehe and im fine with it. To add, i find some good stuffs online too, free music, downloads, music videos, i do not have to wait for them to show it on mtv and i can listen and watch it by myself... I think too that it would probably take a few more years before theycan develop something new. i think WWW is what it is now... and will just evolve into something better... but not be replaced by something new.

I do not think I will ever get completely bored with the internet but I have days were it seems like there is nothing to do online. today I made the choice to get on mylot and start making time here instead of being on facebook all day. I love being online but there are somedays I choose to try and stay away and live life in the now instead of through typing or whatever.

I know what you mean. I went out with my husband on Saturday night (something we hadn't done since New Year's Eve) and we had a whale of a time. It was so nice actually speaking to people rather than to type, like you say. Fortunately, I don't go on Facebook so MyLot is the main way I communicate with people away from family.

I don't think I could get bored of the internet, because there's so much you can do with it, listen to music, watch movies and TV shows, earn money, play games, there's just too much to do with it so you can't really replace it with something else.

Yeah I get that feeling too. Like I would get all excited to log on and get onto the internet to start browsing or do whatever I like to do. By the tie I open the internet, I just sit there and think what I should do and then eventually I'll grow really bored. After discovering Mylot, I always find something to do on the internet now. I would usually spend about an hour on Mylot and then leave the rest for other stuff like watching a movie or playing games. Now if I didn't have Mylot, I would spend more time with movies and games and eventually, I'll run out of things to do on the internet. I hate it when I have nothing to do online.

I do know what you mean. If I compare the time spent on the internet with, say, a year ago, it's definitely gone down, but that's due to me ensuring I don't spend TOO much time on it..therefore I have to find something else to do. I'm hoping Father Christmas will bring me an Amazon Kindle which would take me away from both the computer AND the TV! I used to read proper books when I was younger but I haven't read a book..ironically, since I bought the computer before this one in 2001.
