Things you do for your own safety.

I lock my car doors all the time. Someone could be in the back seat or on the back floor and you don't know. So I look before I get in because someone could have overrident the lock. I also have my key ready in my pocket before I get to my car. I study people before I introduce myself to them. I watch them at the Mall or wherever. There are so many people who are mean or whatever. But usually if they don't know you're watching, they reveal their true selves. That way, I don't get involved with mean people. I try not to go out at night. If I do, I wear reflective wear because even white and orange don't show up very well where I live, but reflective wear and lights do. So what do you do for your own safety?

I watch people too. I think back to when I was young and all the stuff I used to do. My girlfriend wanted me to hitchhike with her once. I wouldn't but she did. I recall going with strangers and letting them into my home. Would never think of doing such a thing now days. I lock my doors and when the kids aren't home I lock myself inside. I am not really friendly anymore. I have taught my kids many safety measures. I remember the scariest thing that happened to a co-worker of mine. She came to work and she wasn't the usual smiley self and we all asked what was going on. She had stopped at the convenience store just up the street from out office to fill her tumbler with pop for the day. She goes up to the clerk and is getting her money out when the clerk gets her full attention. He has just seen a person get into the back seat of her car. He calls the police and she stays inside until the policeman comes. I guess it was a local gang member. He was wanting to get his 'colors' and to do so he has to beat up and old person. Can you believe it?!

Sick, to get into a gang he has to beat up an old person. Sick, sick, sick! Another gang member from an opposite gang, that would be different. Would he want someone to kick his Grandma's butt?

I know. It is pretty rediculous.

I suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which I'm in therapy for now, so my safety precautions sort of go above and beyond! A lot of them are pretty whacky! I always check the stove more than once before bed, I always make sure any hair appliances are off, I wash my hands before every meal, and before preparing meals as well, and I also have to make sure nothing is touching radiators because I'm so scared of fires! Those are just a few of many precautions I take. The rest of them are even more bizarre! Oh well, it's something I'm working on!

I guess I don't do much as far as safety goes. I live in a small area where you tend to know a lot of the people you see and those you don't know are friendly. I always lock my doors, mostly because of people stealing out of cars but if I'm alone or it's just me and my kids I don't want to take the chance of someone being in there like you said. I'm not too worried about going out at night like I said, safe area, but I'm never really alone. I lock my house at night if I'm home alone. It's good to think of safety, you never know what could happen.

True and it sounds like you do some things even though your area is pretty safe. Ours was safe. I lived here 7 years with nothing bad happening, then we had 3 murders, one in each of the last 3 years.

I've said it before, I pretty much consider myself the most dangerous thing around me, so I pity the fool that messes with me.

Locking the house's door is something that I see to everytime, it might happen specially because it's the one thing we have to REMEMBER to do everyday, even more than cars cause somedays we don't use them. The car it's good to put an alarm, inssurance, things like that, in that way you are all set.

I live in an apartment so I put the chains and locks on my door and close the window near the fire escape.

Yes, I think that's wise. Never had an apt. with a fire escape. Only seen that in the movies.

I probably do not do enough for safety. I do lock car doors almost all of the time. I understand about the person that might hide in the car. I park in lighted areas. If I go out at night, I go in lighted areas. I watch what is happening. I avoid walking into groups who are idly standing around. I do not answer the door to strangers.

Seems like you probably do plenty for your area. The lighting thing drives me crazy. I park my car under a light during the day. By the time I get out of the store, it's dark. I pick the only light in the entire parking lot that has a burned bulb every time.
