Have you started preparing for the winter (summer) ?

The weather forecasts are saying that the coming winter is going to be severe. If so, we have to be prepared for it. One thing I will be doing before winter arrives is to have the furnace in the house inspected and have it in good condition. That is necessary to have the heating system working. How about you ? Have you started preparing for the winter ? People in the Southern Hemisphere will be preparing for the summer, of course. How do you prepare for the summer ?

To prepare yourself for the coming winter is a wise decision. We have to prepare ourselves for the future as we can face it properly. In my locality we have faced 8 degree temperature. It is lowest. So my preparation is simple.

Only 8 degrees ? Oh, that's very nice, cool and refreshing. Yeah, your preparation will be simple ! Here, the temperature goes below zero. The rivers become ice. And, heavy snow at times too.

Yes, I have started preparing for winter. We heat with wood to help with the electric bill as our home has electric heat. It seems that we are not as stocked as I want to be on wood, but we do have some ready for winter. I have plenty of meat in our freezer and I am getting some more vegetables in each time I go to the store. I like to be prepared. I need to make sure that I get some good winter boots for all three of us and then I think that our winter wardrobes are set as well.

We do not have winter in our country, although I had some experiences with winter when I was in China. For me that was a fantastic winter because I was bale to wlak, hold, and play with the snow. It was so much fun but the coldness that it brings is someting to be prepared with really. It goes deep into the bones. Summer is not a problem in my country because it is moderate unlike the summer in mainland China.

Hello Irene. Here in Canada, the winter gets very severe some times, extreme freezing cold. There will be tons and tons of snow. One has to be prepared for that.

greenline You are wise to prepare..especially with a furnace inspection because it sounds as if you will have a lot of use for it this winter. I live in California so not much preparation needed here...I will take out my warm sweaters and jackets...that's about it...

Yes, I don't know how severe this coming winter is going to be. But, it is better to be prepared than not. So, the furnace is an important facility to be in good order. California would be very nice , indeed.

I have brought in the houseplants and blocked some drafts. We have used our downstairs heat a time or two. I have lots of provisions as far as food goes. We have many blankets and warm coats. I have snow shovels and ice melt to spread if the walks are icy. I have done as much as I ever do. Actually we have furnaces upstairs and down and one was needing repair and got it early this year. The thermostat was not working for it or the air conditioning upstairs. It go so hot we had to have the a/c and so that fixes it for the heat as well.

Hello. You are indeed very well prepared for the winter. Sounds like you have a big house, and need to prepare downstairs and upstairs. Yes, need to have ice melting salt too, as the walkways get pretty icy some times. Thank you for the response.

BRRR! Ah, yes...I heat by firewood only, and I have about 7 cords of dry fir, in the woodshed, 6 boxes of cedar kindling...but I still have to get my son (coming home next weekend) to fire up the generator, change the oil, etc. Living on an Island, in the middle of Georgia Straits, we can get some pretty fierce winds, that knocks the power out for days on end, so the Gen. was a necessary evil to keep the freezers running, and a few lights! Also have to put my storm windows up! The gardens are all snug under their mulch! Bales of hay in for my sheep in case the Ferries don't run for days! Can happen with prolonged winds! Can't think of much else, but pray that it is NOT nearly as rugged as they are predicting...the worst in 20 years, they are saying...and I do have a lot of books stock-piled! LOL. Hope you are as snug as a bug in a rug, too!

Did not look at your profile, greenline...but am trying to guess the area of Canada, of which you live....by the way you are describing your winters. I grew up in the interior of B.C., so have experienced some mighty ferocious winters...the coldest I can remember is we set a record..(back in the days of Fahrenheit) 63 degrees below! I now live in the Gulf Islands (between Vancouver and Victoria) so the winters are not anything like the interior...but the cold is a very different form, damp, damp cold...hence this is why I reverted to wood heat, as it is such a dry heat! OUr monster is the winds, weather that blow up the Georgia Strait! I love your comment, have a nice winter...as I will try as hard as I can, but being a summer person..it is just one long trial for me..LOL!

I've heard that about the coming winter too! And I was planning to get winter tires for the car this year. I get by every year without buying a set, as winter is never really severe here in the west coast. But my tires are getting old(bad), and it was almost touch and go last winter. So, maybe just to be safe, I'll shell out the extra cash and get a set this year.

Yes, I certainly agree with you. That's what I am thinking too. My car tires are getting old too. I should change them to winter tires, to be safer. That may be a bit expensive, but worth doing.

We have started getting ready for winter. We cleaned and or replaced filters for the furnace. We bought the plastic sheeting to help insulate windows. I put away the summer clothes, and got the winter ones out. Mentally, I am not ready for the cold or the snow, but I know the house will be ready.

That's wonderful. I have also done furnace cleaning and replacing filters. I do that regularly before winter comes. Yeah, I know what you mean. It is always hard to be mentally prepared to face the severe winter, isn't it ? Heavy snow and storms !

hi, in our area we are now all geared up for the 'festival of lights' i.e. Diwali and the winter is likely to be followed by this festival. As we experience heavy rains, this time we do expect severe chillness as well. If you ask me how well prepared I am to welcome winter, i am least done. But yes, you reminded me think over what all should be done including shopping, washing / dry cleaning the cardigans etc./ taking out winter cloths for children... and much more.

actually,I have started preparing for the coming winter, it is reported that the weather this year would be quite bad and be extremely cold is among those. while I am not afraid of it because I have well prepared for it. you may wonder what should I prepare for it? it is so easy. I just make a plan of regular exercises to build my body and make it stronger and stronger. Now I can feel the real power of my body. It really works. what about you? have you had anything special to prepare for?

That is excellent. Yes, it is indeed important to be healthy to face the severe winter. Regular excersizing helps a lot. My favorite way of staying healthy is jogging. I go jogging in the park every evening after I get back home from my work. Wish you good health !

[smiling] I think it is the same with your summer time, but here it is hotter, 30-36 degree celicius. Nowadays, we cannot predict the rainy seasons anymore. It can be a heavy rain all of a sudden in summer time, and cause some flood at certain area. very bad. and at the same time, it will be a heavy dry season at the other island, cause lots of dry and no water and all plants die. And I cannot imagine if I come to your country, I will be frozen immediately. Here, if my sister turn on the AC with 20 degree celcius, I am frozen in no time. But I do really want to feel snow. Wish someday, I can come and stay there :-) Do you think it is necessary to bring the winter clothes from here? in Jakarta, we have some stores that sell a thick clothes for winter. It might be cheaper. But I do not know whether it is really useful to avoid the cold or not.

We just bought the house, but have been living in it for over 4 years. We bought it from our landlord. Last winter there was an issue with the furnace and it was repaired and inspected, so thankfully that is taken care of. We have a small leak on the roof that we need to take care of before winter and I would love to get the kitchen window replaced because it leaks HORRIBLY. Other than that, I'm making throw blankets for the kids to have when they are laying around the house. Everyone has 2 or 3 heavy comforters for their beds. I'm looking at getting a heated mattress protector for my bed, my room is one of the coldest in the house, which is fine, however my husband works overnights and I'd like to have a warm bed to climb into at night.

Yup. Word on the street is it's going to be a pretty cold winter this year. Luckily, we're still going to have some heat for at least a week or so. It's in the seventies outside right now, and we're hoping it'll last until at least Halloween so that the kids can get some candy without their toes falling off. Winter is my favorite time of the year. Thanksgiving, Christmas, those are the days! We've already seen Christmas decorations in stores, which makes me upset, because it just ruins the purpose of having them when it's actually Christmas! I've gotten out my winter clothing and my sweaters, and our hotpot cooker is out more often now. I just hope we get tons of snow this year!

Well, I've definitely changed out all of the clothes in our family from our summer clothes to our winter clothes with a few things that are appropriate for warm weather left in the mix because of the fact that it really hasn't gotten cold yet. Also, we've made sure that our furnace is working well. The last thing that we really need to do is to get some firewood that we will be able to use the fireplace on the days when it is extremely cold outside.

A few tips for winter. Trying to cut down on using gas/electric heating or central heating will reduce your fuel bills (and help reduce carbon dioxide). Get some really warm clothing, get a jumper, get some thermal underwear, get some thermal socks (so important on cold days). Get a blanket (preferably wool :) ) and use it just for in front of the tv. Some gas boilers are more efficient if you leave them on constantly rather than them cooling down and then having to heat up again, esp if it's just water heating. other important things for winter are shovels for snow, tyres for your car - always check the tread! you can save lots of money by using clothing and being sensible about winter instead of wearing a t shirt and sticking the heating up high!
