I changed the kale to put my tomato plants...

Tomato plants inraised bed - The tomato plants grew a lot since I transplanted it to their final place. I suppose it has to do with sun and good soil.

in a sunnier spot. As my garden is not so big and I get greedy wanting to have everything, I decided to place the tomatoes in the raised bed which is at the sunniest part of the garden. I had to place elsewhere the kale and now the poor plans as in a fight with snails. But my tomato plants aare gorgeous. I planted the round and the long kind. I like the long ones for sauces, chutneys and jams. Do you plant tomatos? What do you do with them? I remember last year, Msdianait taught me to make fried green tomatoes..

Fried green tomatoes are good food. I didn't have any this year. I love home canned tomatoes. The ones u buy in the store don't hold a light to homecanned ones. I think a good ripe homegrown tomato makes anything better.

My tomato plants are growing fast, but not as fast as my wishes for good homegrown tomatoes, Jo. I call the tomatoes we buy at the super "plastic tomatoes". They might be even more beautiful then the homegrown, but the taste is something else. I was taught here to make fried green tomatoes last year and I grew addicted to them.

One of the earliest plant I learned to plant when I was in grade school is tomato because it grows very fast here but I don't plant tomatoes anymore since it's available everywhere and very cheap. Kales and cabbages are more expensive cause it does not grow here, only in upland Philppines where the climate is cool, so most of them come from the Northern Mountain province of Benguet and Baguio City and in the south they come from a place called Tagaytay. What we commonly plant here is "pechay" or Chinese cabbage or Bok Choi. fried green tomatos? maybe should try that, tomatoes here is use mainly for sauteeing with onions and garlics

I learned here, at mylot about fried green tomatoes. It´s an ameican dish. It happened when I accidentally cut some green tomatoes here while watering the plants. I asked for help and received the recipe. He we eat tomatoes in salads, soups, sauces and we also make a raw sauce to put over meat at barbecues with diced tomatoes, onion, minced coriander leaves, hot pepper if you wish and salt, oil and pepper YUMMY!!!

This is the end of the tomato season for me! VERY SAD! But all good things must come to an end! They are straggling on in the green house, and I still get to eat a couple everyweek...but for the last two nights, heavy frost--so being that I refuse to heat the greenhouse, I will have to eat some fried green tomatoes, and freeze the rest...before Mother Nature does..LOL! Yes, marguicha...I grow all forms of tomatoes. Roma's which are the long ones, and known here, as a "paste tomato" as they are meatier! Beefsteaks, very tasty BIG, BIg tomatoes, one slice does a sandwich...and a variety of Heritage for everyday eating! I love experimenting with the colored tomatoes...like Lemon Gem, and Black Russian! I think it was one of your tomatoe discussions where we really became friends! Hope you are having a spectacular day!

Mysdianait´s pepperonata, made with diced green tomatoes, sweet peppers and diced white onion are awesome too. Don´t forget that one. I have some Roma tomato planted in my garden, but the plants are not doing as well as the normal round tomatoes for salads. Anyway, I was raised on the round ones and don´t even mind eating the seeds.

As long as they are "homegrown" they have that special flavour! Nothing that you can buy, tastes quite as good! I think just a little time, and the Roma's will become prolific, as they are normally very, very productive. I always "mulch" my tomatoes with lawn clippings (about 3 inches deep) which keeps all the soil born bacterias from splashing up on the plant when watering, fusurium and fusillium wilt, are very common here! Mulch also keeps your plants from drying out--keeps the moisture even that helps to deter "blossom end rot!" I prefer the "pepperonata" which I call salsa verde made with "tomatillo's"! Have you ever grown tomatillo's....I just love them!!!!

I love tomatoes, but I haven't had anywhere to plant a garden for many years. I might try to do planters next spring, but I would have to find a way to keep animals out of them since I live in an apartment complex and there is a lake that it is built around so there are always critters running around. I am hoping that maybe in the spring I will be organized enough to be able to do that. Have a great weekend!!!

You can still plant herbs in containers and place them near the windows. I have all my herbs in containers as it´s easier to water and I ofter water them with the rest of the water in the jug that I have at the table for drinking at meals. That way I also save water.
