Ok for thoses who don't know I did not get my drivers license till I was 50 years old almost 51. So I got my license after going to a driving school. I drove for a year and really hated it. I was alway sick in the stomach with my nerves to the point of going down to 104 lbs from 120. It is just not for me. My significant other drives me everywhere now in Puerto Rico. Then again we go everywhere together anyway. I will be 55 in a couple of weeks and my license is up for renewal. Living in Puerto Rico I need to get a clearance letter from New Mexico where I lived before and which who I have a license with now. I have to take the written test over too. Now here is the problem. I can't get in touch with anyone through the phone or email at the DMV in NM. So I was considering giving up the license and just getting and ID from DMV. Do you think it is wise to give it up and just get an ID since I have no plans of driving again or do you think its better to have the license instead of the ID only?

Yes DMV's create so much red tape for all of us. Its just not easy. I just went to a website dealing with fear of driving. I can't believe how many people responded of all ages who hate or are fearful of driving. I'm glad I'm not alone. However, I'm thinking I have to do something to stop the fear from going on. Thank you for your response.

I know I understand what you are saying, however, if you saw how nervous I get just sitting behind the wheel you would understand my dilema over this situation. Drivers do not want someone like me on the road, is what I'm thinking. Thank you for your response though I appreciate it.

I'm a firm believer in having as many options available as possible. You don't like driving but if you renew your license it remains something you can legally do if you choose to or have to. It will remain something you don't want to do but can if the occasion arises that you must.
Are you calling at the right times when the office is open? Write them an email, contact them through their website. The time may come when you want to take advantage of having a driver's license. If not, at least you know you can whenever you want. If you don't renew you've lost a privilege and closed a door.

When I have called its been during the right time however, I'm only getting a fast busy signal which tells me the call is not going through. I might not be able to get through due to the 888 number because I'm in Puerto Rico. I have also sent three emails which states except to get a response within 10 days. It's been way over that and still no response. That is what I don't think I want to do is close the door. Even though it would be so much easier, but I worked so hard and paid alot of money to get my license with driving school. Thank you for your response.

If you can get a driver's license, why give it up? If you have too much hassle to get one or you just can't reach anyone in New Mexico, it is probably better to get an ID temporarily. Anyway, whenever you can, you can get a Driver's license and an ID both. So, don't worry about it.

Driving is a skill not everyone has. If you think that you will be driving or you might be needing it soon then get it or renew your driver's license. My advice is that, everything in this world takes patience to achieve and you need to do the same. If it is hard for you to have your license then just think that it will be harder if you need your license for emergency and you can't use it because it is expired.

I know even though the thought of getting behind the wheel terrifys me. I think I will do what I have to, to get it before it expires. Thank you for your response.

I'm like you I wish I didn't hate it or was afraid of it. I'm glad you were able to decide that it was better for you to do away with it. My problem is I worked so hard to get it and to give it up even though I don't drive will make me upset with myself. I'm so torn by all this. Thank you though for your response.

I know I have to do what I can to get it just for emergency reasons. Thanks for your response.
