NOOB or Newbie...which are you??

I was both...
. I was definitely a NOOB for a long time.
It's not so simple as read the Guidelines FAQ and TOS. When I first joined I just wanted to participate...yeah!
Pretty soon, I realised I wasn't doing very well so I read the Guidelines. They were fairly meaningless. Eventually, after more participating, I read the FAQ. That was OK, sort of. Later still I read the TOS and they were a real eye opener. I didn't understand it all but there were parts I understood very well...the scary parts about being banned and so on.
I've since read the Guidelines at least a dozen times and I reckon (after 5 years or so) I have a pretty good understanding of them but if a post I have made or responded to is deleted because of a violation of the Guidelines, I have no idea of the actual reason most of the time.
I wish the older members would quit throwing their weight around as if they are the boss of myLot and know everything. If you see someone doing something wrong, friend them and send a PM for goodness sake...don't make yet another discussion about read the Guidelines.
If I was the boss of the members I would wave a big stick around and tell everyone to use Spellcheck and preview your post before submitting then EDIT your errors. (Grrr)
And so ends yet another post from an old member telling everyone how to behave here.

Hi MsTickle,
I don’t know what NOOB means… but I agree there are lots of discussions about reading the guidelines. Some I will leave a comment on and most I won’t. There are only a couple of people I will listen to when it comes to those kinds of discussions. Most I just ignore… I think we all respond to some that get deleted. I wonder at the time if it will get deleted, and sure enough in a day or two it will be deleted. I should have just skipped it when I had doubts in the first place.

Hi PQ -
To some extent, a noob is a sort of derogatory term for a newbie who doesn't have a clue. These are the newer members who manage to upset or irritate the more experienced members.
I glance through those discussions and usually move on. If I think a discussion will be deleted I don't respond...those are the ones that get to stay...so you see, even after all this time, I still don't get it.

Hi MsTickle,
Sometimes when I think I won’t respond, I will look to see if any of the older lotters have responded. Like .. if I see some of my older friends respond I will give it a chance, and then zappp!!! It gets deleted so I should have listened to my inner voice to begin with.
Thanks for defining that term for me. I wouldn’t have had a clue to what it was…

thanks for that. i get so tired of read the guildline discussions. because if someone, everyone has to keep being told they probably never will anyway.
most people really just learn as they go. whether others like it or not

"If you see someone doing something wrong, friend them and send a PM for goodness sake...don't make yet another discussion about read the Guidelines."
Every single one of those discussions is usefull to someone else here other than the user who statrts the topic concerning something that they have not understood.
Fortunately there are a few of us who have done a lot of homework, reading the Guidelines and FAQs inside out and upside down and we too enjoy particpating therefore we share what we have learnt.
GAA has said that he is happy that there are many Lotters who are helping out too.
"If I was the boss of the members I would wave a big stick around and tell everyone to use Spellcheck and preview your post before submitting then EDIT your errors" OUCH!
That is something that we are told NOT to do in the Guidelines because myLot is for everyone regardless of whether they write correctly or not. Of course those who do correct their posts before submitting them might get more readers but we should not scold those who do post with errors contained in them too.
I shall now creep back to the couch and you can be happy with the knowledge that this was the topic that caught my eye and caused me to log in today.
Happy New Year!

Hi sweety, nice to see you. Do you remember reading the guideline about researching a topic before starting a new discussion? LOL.
Sorry you took my big stick mention literally. I feel it's really important for the English speaking members to help the members whose first language is not English and who are trying hard to improve their English writing skills, in any way they can and some people are so quick to earn a penny they sometimes write badly and do not bother to correct. This helps no-one, it just makes the post hard for a lot of people to read.
If umpteen people write umpteen discussions about reading the Guidelines, surely I can mention Please edit your post before you submit?
Hope you are doing OK and that the New Year brings you many blessings.

Hehe, I was a simple newbie when I first joined but times changed, I understood everything under a short period of time and now everything is totally clear. I read everything two times and there has been no problems at all. Moreover, my opinion is completely positive of the older members. All of them are always kind and nice to everyone, I've never experienced the opposite. I hope everything stays the way as it is, I think it's perfect at the moment.

Welcome to myLot Tibor1450 and thanks for such a pleasant, positive response. Every one of us is a newbie at some stage and we all have different ways of getting to our feet at a new place...it is harder for some than for others. I'm really glad you caught on quickly. Well done!

Hey this is a refreshing post!
I definitely agree that there are a few 'veterans' here that are throwing their weight around. In fact, I may have been guilty a few times. Or worst, I just ignore posts that clearly violate the guidelines.
Thanks for the refresher of maybe sending a noob or newbie a helping hand!

I don't think you throw your weight around friend.
I've seen members downright harassed for asking questions and quite often that harassment turns into an attack...that's how I see things at least. That sort of stuff is just not the myLot way.

Noob or newbie is to good for describing poor old me.
I am horrible at reading as i cannot remember what i have read, so reading the guidelines ain't not much help, ya know.
Anyhow, wheres the vodka then?

Personally I can relate with this one. There are times I will respond back to something and then see it has been deleted and wonder why, and other times respond back and know why. The main thing is sometimes these need to be kept up there for the New people to realize what they are doing wrong so many of us older ones can help them. I feel no one really needs to be a Judge here. Just try and help out the New ones so many more will want to stick around.

Now that's the myLot way Tina. Helping each other is the way to go - yes, it's sometimes difficult to get through and sometimes we can be a bit blunt but most of us mean well. A section for newbies would be great...a separate bit where these discussions are left up for the newbies to read. Great idea!.

Hello Ms Tickle... When I joined myLot, I didn't feel the need to read the guidelines.. I don't say that I knew each and every rule... All I knew was I would not violate any rule... Because all wanted to do was to have discussion.. All I wanted was to post as much as I could.. I have been kind of a loner, with no ready ear to listen to me.. .So I thought, I would better write here... Some would read, some won't... But I knew that my thoughts would be heard... And it proved true.. It has been 5 years.. I have not been real consistent, but I have been able to make friends... A lady fondly calls me her Son.. I have never received such an honor... It feels better to be on myLot...
Bosses on myLot!! I have not seen any yet.. I am sure I never sounded like being bossy...LOL.. I am too humble to be a boss, anyhow... But yes, when someone intentionally violated the rules in discussions, I made one or two honest attempts to explain things (they never work though, those honest attempts)..
As far as I know, I have behaved well here... myLot is home for me, one doesn't like to mess up things at home, right???
Happy New Year Miss... Have a great time...

Hi mr_pearl, nice to meet you. When I joined, all I wanted to do was rake in the cash.
. I've always been too shy to throw myself wholly into the site as a lot of people are able to but I'm happy doing my own thing here.
You must keep a very low profile because in all the time we've been here, I've not noticed you. I hope we cross paths further in the new year. Cheers...

Well, well...MissyTickle...signing the old year off with "bells"...are we? Love your diplomacy! To be very honest, duh, I just learned something (even tho' I thot I was learned to most of the groundrules)...did NOT know that you could PM some-one with whom were NOT on your friend's list! Thanks for waking me up! I have, oft, responded to a discussion knowing full well, a good chance of deletion...hoping that I can help them thru the "hoops" of myLot! Most are "one-line" discussions with poll-type...and honestly, I do it with kid gloves...sometimes with humour...but must be careful as it can be lost in language barriers!
By the by...belated Happy New Year!

Hello there pergy dear and belated season's greetings and hugs to you too dear one. I have lead you astray it seems...we cannot send a PM unless the person is on our friend list...that's why I wrote...friend them and send a PM Or close to that.
It's really good to see so many members offering help when someone posts incorrectly. It's hoped these responses help both the original poster and those who have responded unknowingly to a discussion which will more than likely be deleted.
Cheers my dear!

Stop telling me what to do
I think it is a good idea to send a PM to a member that a senior member sees is violating a guideline. There is certainly more of a chance that they will get the message than the chance they will run across a discussion about their mistake. I have seen a lot of discussions be deleted and I never did figure out how they had violated guidelines. I think the most common and hardest to abide by is the "poll type" discussions. The ones where if the question is able to be answered yes or no..it could be considered poll type. I am very careful about that one. I haven't had a lot of deletions but the one I did have was because of that guideline and it was my most active discussion here. The body of the discussion wasn't poll type so I think it was my introduction.

Hi Jen -
I received a deletion message the other day. The discussion heading was "What's your favourite colour and why?" It was a very old discussion if I remember correctly and I thought...is someone going through older discussions and reporting the ones they consider a poll?

Because that's the only reason I could think of for this discussion to be deleted...and yet, I remember giving a well detailed response saying what colours I enjoyed and the reasons I enjoyed them and to me, that was not a poll but an interesting discussion about people's colour preferences. I'm glad I'm not the only older member who is still not sure...

Hi MsTickle
Wishes for A Happy New Year to You.
During the small time of about 3 years(my profile still says it is 2 years only and I wish it was the First day of Year 2
) I tried quite sometimes to send off messages to the Newbies on "Having to Courtesy to RESPOND back on their started discussions" but none of them heeded to those.
Today, I DO NOT (yes, unfortunately that is quite true) go around trying to pose myself on these anymore. Just because I am here to chat, discuss and converse... not to talk to myself. I believe almost all of us (barring the three great people I always mention - MysD,HWG and Owlwings - maybe a couple more to add on that list) I feel no one cares anymore on sending out PMs, Guiding and blah blah... because on 95% occasions they fall on deaf ears, and we (the others who are not in that Special Category) - feel that we are here to enjoy our time not to lecture to those who wont care to grow.
I do try to Spellcheck, rarely do a Preview - These are beyond my natural process as I am quite Impatient and lazy - MyLot Community understands that and I am thankful to all my friends and fellow lotters who keep excusing me for my Laziness
.

Hi thesids - wishing you the best of good wishes for 2012 my dear friend.
I so agree with the first part of your response, in most cases our offers of help and suggestions fall on deaf ears. I think most new members figure things out in their own way in their own time. If they don't they probably leave.
As for checking...you might be impatient and lazy (I don't think so
) but then again, you rarely make mistakes or have errors. You are truly a valued member here sir.

I have been described as a NOOB on more than one occasion, but it was only spelt with one O.
I am not sure what the guidelines are, but what I do is, find people I like and then follow them. Next best thing I think!

I think I am both
But I keep checking the guidelines whenever I feel the need to look on it. Sometimes when I think I should guide someone who's confused with the guidelines here. I sometimes feel the itch to reply on the post of a lotter who might not be reading the guidelines and advise them to check it in a good tone. I have tried couple of times to send some a PM if they're already my friend.
About the editing of post...
I feel guilty about it. I usually hit the post button and not preview my post. =)

Hi enelym001. I sometimes see a newbie misunderstanding things here and I think I will offer a helping hand but I'm generally too late and find that a dozen or more members have already jumped in to set things straight. I figure they don't need yet another member telling them .
As for the editing, we all make mistakes and forget to check, me included but I'm talking about those who rarely or never check.

hi mstickle I am not sure what a noob is, forgive an older user for being dumb or stupid, I am starting my fifth year here and I guess I am a bit guilty of telling people t o read the guidelines,. but its because I am a practical person.whenever I venture into a new site or buy something that has to be assembled I do read the guidelines,is there something wrong with doing that? I am confused as when I joined I was told by the admins to read the 'information. Now I do not think I am the boss of mylot but resent being scolded for simply suggesting one read the guidelines as I feel they are important. I realize there are some here who do not like guidelines and rules at all so be it. they soon get fed up and leave. I am with you on editing as I so many times forget until I hit post and see a bunch of gosh awful errors. we all must edit before posting. but I assure you
I am not the boss of anything let alone mylot. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I see this older post revisited, which is fine it shows that you still have an interest MsTickle. Must say that I noticed you hadn't come across any of MrPearls posts before a month ago. Must say this is the first time I've noticed your presence and you have obviously been around some time. Must be because were not on each others friends list.
Have not noticed any bulling by older members, only kindly helpful hints which for a reasonably new member is very useful. Must admit even though I use a spell check I do make mistakes and spell things the old fashion way, just won't submit to US spell check.
Certainly agree that the guidelines and FAQs have to be reread several times after initial contributions.

Hi there telmesh and a belated welcome to myLot. I'm here most days for several hours off and on and I seem to spend most of my time reading.
I wouldn't submit to a US spell check either...lol. Although since a recent Firefox update, one of the sites I use is now using a US spell check, which is most annoying, I just ignore it. I mostly use spell check for corrections when I mistype something...I actually spell quite well.
It's so nice of you to contribute here in such an agreeable manner...thanks. See you round.

Thanks for your kind comments MsTickle. I'm afraid my spelling is bad I am continually calling to my wife whose spelling is excellent to ask for the spelling of this and that not literally I can manage those two. Just coming back to this page noticed straight away bulling for bullying. Sometimes I would give upon myself, I actually read through my contributions before I post them as well.
