oil change

They were reporting on the news that most models newer than around a 1997 can tolerate not getting an oil change for 5,000-7,500 miles depending on the model and I guess there's even a phone app for that too! *LOL* I guess they were even saying that the new 2012 models can go up to 10,000 miles for an oil change.
Do you keep up with the strongly promoted 3,000 mile oil change routine? Sadly I only drive 5,000 miles a year so with that I really just stick with an oil change a year unless the lil light on my dash goes on which is usually about 5,000 miles.

I still change my oil at around 3000 miles and I drive a 2004 Toyota. It is hard for me to remember sometimes but my car has done a lot of mileage. right now it needs to be completely overhauled and cleaned too. I do hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and I also hope that this New Year will be a better one for you

Thanks Cynthia! Holidays were ok, my new year will be getting better little by little. I don't drive much but the dealership thought I should have a several hundered dollars in maintenance done.I don't drive much and I have next to no miles on my van if Idrove alot then I could justify it.

I have always had older cars and changed the oil religiously every 3,000 miles. As a result, I never got rid of a car with less than 250,000 miles on it!
I got my very first new car in 2005 and was leery of the claim that it didn't need such frequent changes. But every time the light came on I would get the oil changed. It's been nearly 7 years now and the car has never had any trouble other than routine maintenance!
Like you, I don't drive a lot of miles so I get it changed roughly once per year. I guess the claim is true and it saves me some money.
I did have a big expense last month when I got all the fluids, including the transmission and antifreeze, changed but it was due to be done and it means I'll get years more service from the car. It's paid off and runs like a champ. At this rate and my age (57) I may never have to buy another car!

The only maintenance I do is the oil change and whatever else like wiper blades, wiper fluid replacment ect. I'm sure I could use all that servicing BUT the last time I was recommeded maintenance it was $200-300, when you live hand to mouth it's just not happening.

Yes, it's about 3,000 to 5,000 miles for my car, but I try to get it don't before it ever hits the 5,000 mile mark.

I think the only time I get the oil changed is when I have the money to do so. I usually do go at least 5000 and often more unless I see that my oil level is low or it is dirty. Of course, it doesn't help that I don't check it very often. The last time it was done was when the mechanic put in the new engine. I haven't put many miles on the car since that time so it may be a year before I get it done again. I think the 3000 miles is just the shop's way of trying to make more money off us.

Normally I get one once a year at tax time due to affordability. Car maintenaince has never been my strong suit, LOL. I must drive the average number of miles, because that little sticker that tells me the date or mileage of my next oil change, I hit the mileage right on the date I was supposed to hit it.

LOL indeed! I know I only go once a year or maybe up to 2x a year if that since I've been home with the kids. I don't meet the mileage til many months afterwards my van is 6yrs old and only has 26k on it!!!

You know, my car does actually say that it only needs an oil change every 5,000 miles or every three months, whichever is a shorter period of time. However, I tend to stick with the 5,000 miles between oil changes because that ends up costing me less money than having one done every third month. Honestly though, I do think that you can go longer than that with your oil changes as long as you make sure that your oil levels in your vehicle remain at an adequate level.
