Hello Friends Just a week ago when I was working on laptop, I saw that smoke is coming from the upper side of the keyboard part. I just got worried and immediately I shut down the laptop and remove the battery(cause it can be blast).. I was worried that my laptop will be blast with me.. I guess I done the proper thing. Or I done that thing because cause i got scared.. Whatever. What do you think we should do during such time ?? There was something flaming inside but I can't throw water on it... When I saw it to one shop for repairing purpose, he told me that there was more damage inside the laptop and I have to paid more for it. So I decided to buy new laptop by selling that old laptop (get very less money) to that shop. I guess its better to go for new instead of spending too much for a old laptop.. What do you think ?

I am not an expert so I am not sure what was wrong with your old laptop. If it's because of the LCD then I think it got nothing to do with the battery right??? Even if I always use my laptop on bed I will always make sure I switch on the cool fan so it will make it less heat. I just wonder one thing, since you are already sold your old laptop was that mean you gave the whole laptop?? I mean the hard disk as well??

Well, When the problem occurred I wasn't sure it was due to LCD or battery. That's why i got worried and remove the battery instantly. But after a day I came to know about it that lcd got damaged from inside.. Yes I sell the whole laptop including with my harddisk by completely formatting it.. But yes after copying my important data.

Hello AKP, Yes it was good to buy a new one as i think it would have costed much to repair it.You did it right, first thing which comes in mind is to shut down the laptop and remove the battery in that case. But what was the cause of the smoke AKP? Is there any wire short in the laptop?.

Hi sj.. I did the same thing. I immediately remove the battery after shut down the laptop. The problem was its lcd screen. Its lcd screen got damaged and didn't showing the display after that smoke. When I saw it to repairing person, he told me that it will take 6000 RS. And I thought its not worthy to spend that much money behind that old laptop. So I got new one. (Samsung)

Oh 6000 Rs is too much. That's the reason i bought desktop not laptop as maitenance charges for laptop are too high. Recently LCD of my computer also got damaged but as it was under warranty so they did not charge anything.

Seven years is a very good age for a computer. You know they say that a dog ages seven years for every one of our years? Well a computer ages one year for every month of ours! So your laptop was really 84 years old! Time to pension it off and rest in peace.

I agree with the others that you are better off buying a new laptop. It's cheaper than way compared to having your old laptop repaired unless if you wish to repair it on your own and in your own time and leisure. I know that if my laptop would suddenly fail, I would still keep it because it holds some sentimental value to me and I will try to fix it but I will still buy a new one to use.

Wow! That laptop really served you well. By the way...speaking of expected lifespan, laptops nowadays are very fragile compared to those old models. In terms of durability and endurance to perform hard work, the old units are unbeatable. The only problem they have is that you can still take a nice long nap before they can finally show you something you want to see especially large files. Good luck in canvasing for a good laptop that would serve your needs! Sometimes, it's better to research a certain product over the net first before going to the store and buying one. Nowadays, laptops have different advantages over the other so you should know what you would use your new laptop for. Example if you work on graphics and sounds or multi-media, get the laptop that has fast processing video cards and the main processor itself; If you're only using it for regular tasks such as for documents, the regular ones are good and they're cheap. Be careful also on what brand you're going to choose. My advice is choose those with good background in terms of durability. Some brands offer products that are very fragile on some parts while some can handle falling down and still work like it didn't kissed the floor just a moment ago. Hope this helps a bit. Happy MyLotting!

Whoa! Good thing that you noticed that your laptop is already smoking. It could have been worse especially if you just leave it on like when downloading stuff and other things. It is good that you have done an action to prevent further disaster from developing. If you haven't done anything and continued to use your laptop, you might even need to shed out more money in the end when a fire occurs because of that compared to just buying a new laptop or even repairing that laptop of yours. In my opinion, you should buy a new laptop rather than repair the old one. The damage should be serious and you will never know how much it can be repaired back to normal.

Wow! Nice job! You were able to dispose of your old laptop and still able to earn from the sale of it. Good thing you got someone to buy it when it is already smoking like that! Now, you better take care of your new laptop and prevent the smoking to happen again. I suggest that you buy some fan cooling for laptops. They are readily available and I think they have cheap prices. Just a suggestion.

Hi AKP Didnt I tell you - Not to change those avatars so frequently... Angered the Lappy? Now that the old lappy is gone and the new one in... Dont start smoking over it... it will get that habit soon and might be addicted Seriously speaking, you should have consulted with another laptop doctor before making a decision to sell off that old one at a lesser price. Maybe when you compare the two prescriptions you become more sure of what the ailment is

I consider about it with three person who are working in this field and they are like my friends.. And as per them I got good money for that old laptop.

Hi akp100! I had the same situation as you do a couple of months ago. When my lap top overheated. It was plugged-in for a long time and I was not able to shut it down just because I was too busy surfing the internet. For me, what you did was a good decision. You will have to spent more money to spent more money having it repaired, not assuring that their would be any damages due to the blast.

New is definitely better than paying more than the old one was worth. I took a laptop in for service thinking it just needed the keys cleaned or something and they said there was a problem with the motherboard, the hard drive and a few other things. I got a new laptop because I had paid for "black tie" service at best buy so I didn't have to pay for the repair and got a comparable laptop instead. I just wish I would have had money to put that service on the replacement in case something happened to that one...I think you definitely did the right thing! Have a great week!!!

Yes I noticed the age of the discussion, but I just got to it in my email box the other day. Between school and health problems I fell way behind last year and am slowly catching up. I still always look for interesting discussions that I can respond to even if they are a little old. Is a service plan an option where you live?

Thanks... That's what I think too. Paying more money for repair work is not worthy. As there is not assurance that same problem or another one arise in future. so better we go for new one. As you see this discussion is quite old, so quite time have passed after I purchased my new laptop, and good news is that it is still working very very good.

If you see smoke in your laptop or in your computer there is a possibility that component inside was burn due to short circuit or over loaded of voltage. Just practice not to used laptop while plugin to the outlet because the laptop has small voltage to carry that dissipate in the battery. If the battery is full and not carry the excess voltage it will go to the components which is not suitable to carry more voltage. The result is blown up or burn...

Buy a cooler fan for your new laptop my friend to avoid the battery be burn up again. Do not practice using laptop while pluging into the outlet because it maybe damage your battery due to over voltage
