Cheap countries and expensive countries

I think it is a good idea to mix visiting an expensive country with a cheap country or two cheap countries. I did that with fairly expensive Mexico and Belize and cheap Guatemala. The most expensive cities I have visited have been Oslo in Norway and Stockholm in Sweden. In Oslo the youth hostel cost around thirteen pounds and the youth hostel in London cost about five pounds by comparison. I found all of the places I went to in Norway expensive. I found Indonesia to be a bargain for everything. Wow! In Western Europe it is pricey and Eastern Europe is far less expensive. I found the Seychelles and the Maldives very pricey indeed. Which are the most expensive places you have been to? Which are the cheapest destinations that you have traveled to? Do you wish to travel somewhere specific but you can't afford it? Can you think of ways to travel for less money?

Well, one of the most expensive country to visit is Bhutan. A tiny Buddhist kingdom located between India in south and China in the north. Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan is only the capital city in the world without traffic light. Bhutan is known for its rich culture and tradition. It is untouched my modern scientific changes and Bhutanese are determined to conserve their culture and tradition and environment. It is also known for Gross National Happiness. The tourist are charged US $200 per night. This is done because government wants to preserve rich culture and tradition.

The other day I read an around the world account and the most expensive country that couple went to was Bhutan. I wouldn't be able to afford $200 a day. Just think how many hours of my lotting that would be hey. I have seen pictures of it and it looks stunning.

Sometimes I do that... Like 3 years ago, I visited Singapore then proceeded to Phuket, Thailand. By my standard, Singapore is an expensive place to stay in while Phuket is quite cheap. Then the following year, I went to Kuala Lumpur and Siem Reap. Though I consider Kuala Lumpur as a cheap place, I find Siem Reap as a very very cheap place to visit. I love it there! I live in Asia so I would consider traveling to Europe as very very expensive. So until now, I cannot afford to go there but I would love to. When I travel, I really plan ahead. I go for the dates when there are special promos from budget airlines so it would be cheaper. And try to book the hotels in advance to have discounts. I try to carefully study the routes that I want to visit so I will not spend time and money just finding the places I want to visit in a city.

Thanks for your fantastic response Doggy Dimon. I found Singapore more expensive than Australia but a little cheaper than home. I would love to travel to Thailand to places like Phuket and along that coastline. I also think an overland journey from Bangkok to Vietnam via Siem Reap would be excellent. I worry about the risk of Malaria. You have given some very useful information about how to travel as cheaply as possible.

The most expensive countries that I have been to are probably Sweden and Norway. I didn't spend much time in Stockholm, but it was still pretty expensive. The cheapest countries I have visited are the countries in Eastern Europe. In Romania we had dinner for about $10, and that was incredibly cheap compared the prices in my own country. In Romania we got two dishes and two soft drinks for $10, in my own country one dish often costs more than $20 and it would be impossible to have dinner for $5 per person. I would like to visit Switzerland one day, but it is an expensive country to visit, and I don't think that we would be able to afford accomodation in Switzerland. Even the cheapest places a hostels sound quite expensive, so we would definately have to save up a lot of money in order to visit Switzerland.

Due to the high prices I didn't spend time in Switzerland. I spent more time in Southern Germany and Austria which I found quite pricey too. I am delighted that you found Romania very economical there and had such cheap meals out there. I found Denmark cheaper than Norway, Sweden and Finland. I lived in the Netherlands for four months when I was a university student. I regularly popped across to Germany to get a weekend wonder ticket. It allowed travel all weekend for a low price on all of Germany's slower trains. I went right across to Bavaria which was amazing. I hope that one day you will visit Switzerland and explore a lot there. Hopefully in the future you will afford such a lovely trip as that.

Wow maximax. Thanks for this discussion. I am planning a trip sometime soon. Might get to know something useful here. As to traveling to other countries, I've been to Zambia. Climate is good, but all that was ages ago so dont think I can offer much information on where to stay and how much it would cost. There is a Pamodzi hotel there. That is all that I remember about that place. I guess African countries would be cheaper. Though safety of belongings and person is suspect. But we often have similar things in our country. I wish we were not so over-populated.

Hi Vandana. I liked hearing about Zambia and many countries in Africa like it are ever such cheap destinations. I visited Kenya and paid just $150 for a five day safari. I loved the beaches and the wildlife were superb. I adored shopping in the handicrafts market in Nairobi. The thing that worried me was the possibility of catching Malaria. I kept the the safety rules to avoid getting mugged.

The cheap country is India where u can earn your living by earning around 8,000 per month whereas the expensive country is Bhutan situated between India and China which is famous for its tradition and culture. Most of the daily necessity of the country is required to be imported.Thimpu the capital is the only capital without any street lights. Here minimum requirement is around 20000 per month.

One of my friends has a husband and his work took him to India. He found architects work for little money compared to in my home country. I am very impressed when I read about India's train system, India's low prices and how friendly the people are. Yes, Bhutan sounds way too expensive to me. I think India would be way cheaper than China. In a travel book they said for £1000 have 67 days in India or 14 days in Japan.

I traveled to beautiful Malaysia and found it a cheap destination. It is lovely to hear it has an excellent seascape. I visited Tioman Island and it was glorious.

The most expensive place I have been to is Paris, France. The least expensive place I have been to... there are a lot of them and so I am going to remove the Caribbean from the equation and probably say Morocco. I hesitate to say so because there was a lot of 'cheap' and a lot of insanely expensive. I'd like to visit Tahiti/Australia/New Zealand/etc... but it is #1 very expensive and #2 very far from where I live. As for traveling for less... eliminate what is not needed. Travel during times that are down times. Use a service like Kayak or others out there that track the price of flights/hotels/etc.... Additionally use a credit card that gives you airline miles. A free flight can remove thousands (literally) from the cost of a vacation. And earning miles can be from things that you buy every day to other flights that you take. That is a whole discussion on it's own. The biggest thing for me to save money has been to be flexible. Do I need a **** hotel for 2X the money or will a nice *** work just as well. Thanks as always! Zelo

hi maximax8! i agree with you that it is indeed pricey in western europe. i have been to London, United Kingdom and that is a very expensive place. i enjoyed my stay there but my wallet didn't. hehe.. however, the most inexpensive country i went to was thailand so far. i didn't get to spend as much in thailand as i did in my other travels. my husband and i are planning to go to Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam hopefully soon. he just got back from Beijing, China with his friends and we will go back together there after our other planned trips. i think vietnam and cambodia will be the least expensive while singapore will be kinda costly. however, we are planning to avail of promotional tours and stay with a relative in singapore and i guess, that will save us a lot. i have learned that accommodations in Singapore is very expensive and having a relative there will surely help a lot. hehe.. have a nice day dear friend! lovelots, faith210

I have been to London at the government expense. UK is the richest country, isn't it? I have never been else where but plan to go to Australia for a holiday. I hope this will come true. Have you been to Indonesia?

Hello!, you are lucky to be traveling most of the time. You see i always dreamed of traveling to other countries but i could not afford to do it. The places where i have been to only are Hongkong and Macau. I went there because i have to accompany my parents and my sister was the one who sponsored our trip. If it was not for her i should have not gone there. Hongkong trip was not expensive, we availed of the promo air fare and we stayed at a hotel that is affordable. In Macau, site seeing was not expensive too because there are free buses to places where you can watch nice and amazing shows but the hotel is expensive. When we were there all eight of us stayed in one room but we did not tell the reception that we are eight. I really enjoyed that trip because i was able to experience taking a bullet train to their Disneyland. In Macau, the city is exciting at night because there are lots of colorful bright lights. I wish to go back to those places again and maybe other places in Europe and Asia God willing.

I very much enjoyed reading about your time in Hong Kong and Macau. I found Hong Kong reasonably priced. Whilst there I stayed at the youth hostel on top of Mount Davis. Wow, the view from up there especially in the night time. The bullet train sounded exciting. The Disneyland I went to was in California and I traveled there with my sister. We went home after that then I flew onto Hawaii. Yes, Hawaii was much more expensive than the mainland had been.
