Sports and Lesbians and People Who Don't Think

I couldn't think of a great title for this discussion. But here's the deal. I love sports. I love football (American), baseball, and basketball. I watch loads of ESPN, the cable sports channel. And I'll talk about sports with anyone who expresses an interest. And I am yes, a woman. So I'm talking to these two guys at the front of my apartment complex while I'm out with my dog. Another guy walks up, hears us talking about sports and says to me, hey, you look like a girlie girl. And I say, uh, thanks. He continues, But I thought the only women who like sports are lesbians. And I thought most lesbians weren't girlie. So you're girlie and you like sports, what are you? I looked at him and said, "You aren't married are you." ('cause what woman would want him with his attitude?) He's like no, I'm not married and don't have a girlfriend. Then I just ignored him and continued on with the conversation with the other two guys. They were looking at him like he had lost his mind. So yes, I am straight, I'm a woman who loves sports, and I'm feminine. Why do people open their mouths and say they stupid things? Doesn't it cross their minds to think it through before speaking?

Some people are just so used to stereotyping people; they are just stupid about it. Good come back with that question about his marital status. My daughter loves football. She is a girlie girl too. She and her hubby watch it together, and she even watches it if it is on when he’s working… she loves it.

My hubby and his sister talk to each other on the phone all the time about sports, and other things. This stereotype is bad. So is the one that says nursing careers are not for men. It is a bunch of malarky. My hubby is very caring and would have made an excellent nurse, but due to both gender and age stereotypes he dropped that dream. Nursing is a talent and an interest that runs in his family. And he is a "manly man" who loves sports, cars, and lot of other things. But he would have made an excellent nurse.

Sounds like that jerk doesn't have much of a mind for a thought to cross over. It is people like that reinforce gender roles and that stuff burns me a new one. That is the same way women were reacted to when they began their quest for equal rights. They were depicted as having manly features and like the jerk said to you, being lesbian. The media presented them as so to deter them from their goal. Perhaps the guy couldn't stand the fact that you could carry on a more intelligent conversation about sports than he could. No wonder he hasn't met anyone yet.

I have to wonder about his parents. I mean I can't imagine a mother letting her son grow up with that attitude, but perhaps an agressive father gave him that opinion.

Oh that is too funny...But I have to say this because of the Communications class, you may not be feminine, but androgyny... I know I am...Androgyny is someone who exhibits both masculine and feminine traits. For example, you love sports and probably are competitive, yet you are female in compassion and nurturing. I am like this, I am more aggressive in taking action than to sit around, yet I love cuddling and girlie things.. So perhaps this guy needs a course in "Communications" Or next time someone says something like that to you, just say, "No, I am androgyny" it will confuse him and make him look stupid..

I know what androgynus is and I would never refer to myself as that. Because when I hear that term it is usually used for a person who looks like either a man or a woman. It may mean something else, but I never hear it used in a good way! lol

No that isn't what it means..It is like myself for example, I am compassionate, nurturing, love to cook and makes things pretty. Yet I also love to cut the grass and get down and dirty in gardening. I also don't back down when I feel something isn't right, I will speak up, unlike the feminine side that makes one either enable or they are passive in speaking their mind..I am not passive when it comes to speaking my mind...lol

It wasn't my imagination. I was watching a fashion show on TV the other day and they referred to a woman as androgynous. Apparently it can mean man and women characteristics in personality and looks. Look up Tilda Swinton and you'll see what I mean about people looking androgynous! That poor woman.

I just really worked on all papers I had to do. I sometimes did not in other classes and thus maded bs and one c but I learned to think first then write and then edit and edit and edit too.I have met men like that who have the oddest theories about women and I 'did think that these guys really did not have many brains to start out with lol lol What a creep that guy was and how forward of him to talk to you like that. a real jerk.glad he was not married. I would have pitied a woman who married that. lol

I would have said, "I'm like your mother", followed by, "Here's your sign". Without people like them, poor Bill Engval wouldn't have a job, right?

Poor guy, he's got a one track mind. Don't mind him. I think girls who dig sports are really cool. And no, you don't have to be a lesbian to love sports. Sports is for everyone. I am also boyish but that's because I was closer to my father as a kid and I tend to imitate everything - what he wears, how he walks, but when I grew older, I have begun spending more time with my mom so the love for sports was replaced with dolls.

Oh brother. That guy needs a kick in the head. I wonder what he would think of guys who like to figure skate or even watch it?!!!! (I come from the figure skating world - and I know plenty of guys who figure skate and are not gay, although yes there are many gay men who do skate). ANYWAY . . . yep, no wonder he isn't married or has a girlfriend - I wonder what other stupid things would come out of his mouth!

There's going to be those random people who have no idea what they are talking about, he sounds a little dopey. There are some people who don't know how to word their words and just blurt whatever crosses their mind. Some people can be so rude. I don't get why some people just judge based on stereotypes, there are many women who love sports but are still feminine, that guy has some nerve just to assume that you have to be lesbian to like sports. It's like saying gay guys don't play sports while straight men play sport. Something to do with masculinity. I know people who are just like that man you described. They simply just blurt whatever is on their mind, not caring if it offends you or not. Good thing you ignored him, that will teach him a lesson.

That guy doesn't know a lot of things in woman. Was he an idiot? LOL. It's good that there are still woman who love different sports, i mean sports mainly played by guys. I think it's really cool. I used to play basketball before when i was in high school, but that doesn't mean i'm a lesbian. I like wearing black t-shirt and pants with sneakers, but i'm not a lesbian. I just don't like wearing girlish outfit, But it depends on occasion. He just doesn't really know things about women, no wonder he does not have a girlfriend, maybe he had, but they can't stand his attitude.

that guy is so stupid, but don't let him annoy you.it is such an absurd thing that you can ignore it.all that happened just may prove that he is so stupid, his mind is so narrow, and he say what he think just didn't through his mind and didn't think at the position of others.all that just can prove one thing that that he is terrible.besides,i like sports, too.i think one is so healthy and bright if he or she likes sports.just ignore it,don't care so much about it.

You probably didn't think it at the time but that is quite funny. Not for you, I mean, but for someone to be so.. well.. stereotypical and stupid. I know straight women (and men) who like sport and many who don't. I also know lesbians who don't like sport and gay people who do. And all that vice versa. However - and I don't mean to be stereotypical or rude here - I have, so far, not met an English gay person who doesn't watch the Eurovision Song Contest.

People (especially men) are often stupid. Of course you can like sports and be a girl. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I can relate to this because I'm in a wheelchair and people often say idiotic things to me because of it. Once again, sorry!

Hi AmbiePam, All I can say is that I agree with people here and what a jerk! I ABSOLUTELY loved your comment back to him, that was the best! I don't know if I could have kept my cool under the circumstances. I love football and watch it when I can. We use to have football Sundays and everyone would get together and root for our favorite teams, and sometimes there were more women than men at the parties. We had a great time! We would also play football outside in the Fall and run around like a bunch of fools. The remark was completely uncalled for, and I'm sure everyone can understand why he DOESN'T have a wife OR a girlfriend, just a simple moronic loser. Take care hon!

Hi lil sis'! What a complete moron/tool! Glad I wasn't there because I would have taken it even further than you did!I am and have always been a die-hard Yankees fan, Giants fan (Yeah "Go Giants"- It's "Do or Die" this weekend and an avid Basketball fan! I have been watching since I was a little kid. In fact my Father and Brother would banish me from the room because I was a bit too excitable! I would be (and still do) yell at the players, umpires, coaches and curse up a storm! I am worse than some guys if it is a team I am passionate it about (like the Giants)! I don't care who hears me. My boyfriends were always amazed how I understood most of the calls and shots in all 3 sports. The funny thing too was when it came to gym in school I sucked! I dreaded gym class like the plague! Most men are happy to be with women who enjoy the sports and are "girlie" too! If you are in the neighborhood this weekend, stop by and when the Giant games is on~You'll see a older "girlie girl" screan her lungs out for them to win and go to the Super Bowl! Love & Les

No, it never crosses people's minds to think before speaking. You find a lot of those people in the world like my mother in law when she found out I was bi. One of her first reactions 'You're bi. Then why did you get married? You can't fall in love since you obviously don't know what gender you want.' I wanted to cuss her out, but I didn't and I think its great that you ignored this obvious idiot. I know quite a few straight women that love sports especially American football. They even make jerseys for women as well.
