It's been a long time

My oldest was upset because hubby wouldn't get on his bike and ride in the road with her. So she was quite upset. I decided to dig out his bike from the shed and give it a go. Now I haven't ridden a bike in a long time. I only rode the bikes we have now maybe a few times before we moved to the house and that was 10yrs ago. You see, even prior to that I had not ridden a bike since I was 14 and lived a half mile from a bike trail I spent my summer on the trail riding between two parks and 3 cities. Either way I was proud of myself I put the chain back on the gear and I didn't kill myself it's been so long though I was a bit shakey and I was working on turning when I heard something fall? Hmmm... ok what could that be? Hopped off and the pedal fall off! So I walk it back to our drive way and pry hubby from the tv. He thought our Daughter was kidding when she ran in to say the pedal fell off, yep the pedal and the arm it sits on came off the crank. So now it's in the shed and I hope hubby will fix it when he brings his tools home. Still I was glad I got on his bike it had been a long time and I guess you don't forget to how to balance a bike... turning I need to practice more

I keep thinking I'd love to get back on a bicycle. When we lived in the country, I used to take long afternoon rides, just wandering around and looking at things. It's been over ten years since then and after some health problems that have kept me more or less inactive I don't know if I could ride to the end of the block (one house away!). Good luck to you! I hope your husband fixes the bike so you can ride again.

I hope you can give it a try again. I know being affixed to this computer myself isn't very good for me, but I haven't seen a bike with snow tires yet *lol* I can make it to the end of the block (2 houses away *LOL*) I hope I can inspire you to give it a try...

If I had a bike handy, I might try... if no one was around. I used to have an old fashioned one, with just one speed and brakes on the back wheel. It was easy to ride but I don't know if they even make that kind any more. You've inspired me to think about it, anyway!

Good for you, I know my son loves it when his dad or I ride our bike with him. I am sorry the pedal broke, my bike is a folding bike and we just replaced the pedals on it and I also had not ridden for a good ten years when I started riding again. So that saying is true, "Once we learn to ride a bike, we never forget"

Hi Hatley... yes, that would be hard to ride a bike with a brace on, but I am sure most of us who are at least 40 plus, spend many hours on a bike when we were kids. I know I was all over my small village and when I got older, I started biking into the next town where my sister lived..What fun filled days those were..

hicarm oh my G its been since I was 16 when I last rode a bike. nope I don't think I could do that. for one thing I have to wear this totally ugly big boot shoe with the brace on my left leg because a ruptured tendon in my foot was not operated until it was too late. the shoe and brace prevent my left foot from turning over as the tendon is they tell me unrepairable.I think it was because I was in my late sixties and they thought my insurance would not cover it. but anyway this prohibits my foot from resting on the pedal too big and clumsy.lol I used to explore this country side w th my best friend. now the two of us,she back in my home state South Dakota .I here in Southern Ca have found each other and email each other often, lol shes still a republican and she was upset at me for becoming a democrat but she finally forgave me lol she keeps mailing me stuff about How bad President Obama is and I just keep deleting them as I do not want to argue politics.its too nice to find my child hood chum and to be able to talk

I know it would be hard for me to get back on....usually my butt hurts so bad the next day....like riding a horse after 20 years of not riding....it however was so great of you giving it a try and riding with your daughter.....I bet she was thrilled!

Actually she ran in the house claiming she was afraid I would fall. However, my middle was riding along with me and wanting to race *lol*

It's so important to do things with our children--that's what they remember in later years! She'll remember your ride, short as it was, but she'll also have engraved on her memory a picture of her dad glued to the television and refusing to leave it to be with her. Tell your husband that. What would he rather she remember, a short bike ride or the frustration of his rejection? My own husband did the same thing and our boys rarely go see him, the relationship was never built because of his love affair with that damned idiot box. I remember getting on a bike after decades and being a little shaky. It comes back pretty quickly though, doesn't it? And such a pleasant way to exercise! I hope you get it fixed soon and can go on some great rides with your children.

That's why I gave it a try to get the bike out and ride with her. She can remember when Dad wouldn't go out BUT Mom did. I don't think they even knew I could ride a bike.

I think it would be really hard for me to get back on a bike again right now. I got rid of my last bike before I left for China two years ago and I have been in cancer treatment since then so I don't know if I would have the strength to ride very much at all. I hate it when bikes fall apart and I think for the most part I have been lucky in that respect. I have not had anything fall apart on me.

Hmm... I hope that I fare at least that well when I finally try bicycling again. I haven't touched a bike since... Well, I think it's been about 20 years. Since I want kids, I guess that means that a return to bicycling is in my future. It is inconceivable to me that they not learn early on how to ride a bike, swim, ski and play chess.

You are right those are things every kid needs to learn and experience. And also somethings as we get older we don't make the time to do anymore.

I got on a bike last summer. It was okay. The stopping and getting off was bad though, and I never got back on. I will try again soon. I would like to ride more. Proud of you for getting out there with the kids.

It has been a long time for me as well. I am glad that you got to spend some quality time with your daughter. I am sure that meant the world to her. I am afraid I would be falling all over the place if I were to get on a bike right now. I have gained too much weight. I kind of wish I had one so that I could ride it. Might help me lose the weight.

Good for you! it's always fun to try something different with the kids! I jumped on a bike a couple of years ago when my girls were outside playing and they laughed so hard I thought they would pee their pants. I was the same way. It had been a hundred years and I was a little wobbly I didn't wreck though so that was the important thing.

I think it is great your daughter enjoys bike riding, and good for you going out with her. Too bad the pedal broke and spoiled the fun. As for me I haven't been on a bike since I was about twelve or thirteen I remember prior to that I loved my bike(s). I think if I were to get on a bike today, I would need more than turning practice but it does sound fun.
