St Platrick's Day, will you be doing anything special for that day?

Will you be wearing green? Singing Irish songs? Eating Irish food? Drinking anything Irish? Going any place special?
Usually I substitute teach on that day and wear green. This year it's on a Saturday. That Saturday is when we're having our Spring pot luck. So this should be interesting. It will be fun to see who comes and what they do for that day. If they go with the St. Pat's or with the spring theme.
So what would you bring to a combination ST. Pat's and Spring Pot luck?

First of all, it is my birthday. I will be 67 years old on St. Patrick's Day. It's a really great day to be born on. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts which has a very large Irish population so it was always a big deal. I have long lived in Austin, Texas which does not have a large Irish population but has a huge St. Patrick's day celebration.
Along with that, we are having the SXSW music festival in Austin. There is music everywhere. Good music!
I plan on wearing green. I may first go to Whole Foods for their St. Patrick's day food bar. I always eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's day.
I then plan to go to Threadgill's to hear a music show put on by The Folk Alliance. I would not be surprised if the show included some irish music.
If I were invited to a potluck on St. Patrick's day, I definitely would lean towards bringing something Irish or something to go with the entree such as potato salad or cole slaw. I do not cook so I would buy something from the organic grocery store near me. I might bring green cupcakes. That would go with both St. Pat's day as well as spring theme.
Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's day.

I forgot to say that I had a pedicure and have beautiful green toenails. I have a pedicure every year just before St. Pat's day and always have my toenails done in green.

True.
I hope that the festivals that you celebrate make you happy. Do you have one with singing and food to celebrate something someone did? That would be close to what we have, but different of course.

I will be working that day. Not allowed to wear green, not professional. For the potluck I would do a pea salad, substituting baby spinach for lettuce, and tiny winter onions. Of course boiled new potatoes, garnished with dill, dried, because it is too early for fresh. Carrots with dip, of course. Something made with mint would be absolutely necessary as well.

@writersedge I did not bring any in. I will have to check and see what is in the yard. @Casandrina, I did not think of that. I just love fresh spring veggies, but it works.

I love mint. Absolutely adore it. Wish mine was up or I had thought to bring some in for the winter. But Creamie was knocking all my pots over all the time.
Maybe the pea salad. Thanks and take care.

St Patrick's Day seems to more widely celebrated in the US than it is in Ireland or the UK generally. It's an excuse to drink Guinness, and that's about it. And I don't like Guinness!
I'd go with the Spring theme myself. And eggs symbolise spring. Lambs and kids too of course, though perhaps not so suitable for a pot luck!

Why do you keep saying the States to me. I'm an American. If you read below, you'll see it's celebrated differently even in the USA depending on where you are.

No, you didn't irritate me about the US, it's just that many people say US or states to me because they keep thinking I'm Canadian. I have repeatedly told people I am not Canadian. If I was my medical wouldn't be killing us financially now.
Also a lot of people think that all there is to St. Pat's day is drinking. Now that irritates me. Maybe where you are it's an excuse to drink Guiness. That idea was so bad at my college that now my old college closes down every year for St. Pat's fgor the entire week or two and it's manditory that the students go home because the destruction, the drunkenness, it was unbelievable when I was there. Busloads of people went to my college to get drunk because of some idiot article by playboy. 4 buses of people went there to get drunk. They collapsted a floor in a bar because the bar was supposed to hold like 100 and it had more like 300. One girl had to have plastic surgery on her face because someone smashed a bottle on it. She was our Residence Assistance. On and on and on. I and my roommate got swore at because we wouldn't take any of the drunks for our room. I didn't know any of those people and I'm not taking a stranger into my room, esp. a drunk one who might not even be female.
I was hoping for a discussion that had more about food and other things. Maybe he was out of date. But he had a point, it is a St's day, not a day that should be devoted to drunkenness. St. Pat was not the Saint of drunks to my knowledge.
I like the dancing, singing, and food part of it. But if that's all you have there, I hope it never escalates to the mess we had at my college.

We've obviously been at cross purposes! But it's funny that people think you're Canadian. That's why I checked your profile, because I wasn't certain and didn't want to get it wrong. I wonder what it is that makes people think that?
Actually, we don't celebrate St Patrick's Day at all. I prefer the idea of the Spring Pot Luck. I far prefer lunch to Guinness!

I am not Irish, so I will go to a Irish Bar where I live. It seems enough since it's not really "my" holiday you know? But I think it is a really fun holiday, so I still want to do something fun for it!

Well, I guess since I am going to a Wedding that is considered something special, but I also have to work later in the evening, and hopefully that will not be too crazy. Since I am having issues with someone at work again and so I just hope tomorrow will continue to be a Good day overall, but feeling doubtful at this moment.

That's a lot in one day. I'd never be able to make it now. Best of luck to you concerning all three for that day, Wedding, work, and co-worker.

My husband works 7 days a week right now so we won't be going anywhere to celebrate. Wearing green will be about the extent of my St. Patrick's Day celebration this year. I'm very hesitant about going out that night anyway since it's on a Saturday night this year, as you mention, and people get wild and crazy in this town. Safer to be right here and off the highways. I would probably go with the St. Patrick's Day items for the pot luck dinner. Enjoy your evening.

I don't really know much about Irish food. Other than Irish soda bread, I don't think I've made anything else Irish.
I will be returning home at 9PM. Most people start going out to get drunk at 9. Our bars close at 2am. That's when the real danger starts. Of course we do have to worry about early revelers.
Nice to have a response from you. You must be busy. I haven't seen you around in a while. Thanks and take care.

No, I won't be going anywhere special on St. Patrick's Day. I usually fix corned beef and cabbage and watch public television for the Irish music and such that they have on there usually on that day.

Glengarry Boyz, eh? I love the Celtic Women. All of them. I think they will have Bonecelli the blind singer. I probably spelled his name wrong.

I don't know yet if we will do anything special or not. I actually have the entire weekend off and I am on my spontaneous schedule..lol. I think there is a lot going on in a nearby city though so I may have to make an unscheduled trip.
I saw this recipe on the news the other day Irish based. It included lamb. I have tried lamb in the past but it is very expensive and you don't get very much of it.
I might just get me some green food coloring and make something weird..LOL...green shamrock cookies or something like that.

Corned beef and cabbage are big here. Irish soda bread is big here. Some noodles are green already, spinach noodles I think. Good luck. Maybe a search of Irish reecipes might find you something fun. Thanks and take care.

I would take a porter cake to a pot luck - a kind of fruit cake made with Guiness or some other Irish Stout (I have to say I prefer Murphy's but will drink both all year 'round not just on St Patrick's day
).
Recipe hereL- http://www.odlums.ie/index.php?page=porter-cake
My husband, who has Irish ancestry, usually wears a green Irish rugby shirt on St Patrick's - especially if he is at work. However this year England and Ireland are actually playing each other on the 17th in the Six Nations Rugby Tournament so it will be the one year he won't wear it! We'll be in England shirts loudly disagreeing with the referee!
You've got me thinking now. Unfortunately we'll be out tomorrow so I won't have time to do a porter cake to eat during the match unless I get up at Stupid O'Clock to bake it.
I might get some cream liquer and do some special Irish Liquer Coffees instead. Yeah, that sounds like a plan!
