Why would some people refer to eyes that aren't brown as "colored eyes"?

So I was looking at one of my friends pictures and both her and her baby have blue or hazel eyes. Well some of the people commented stuff like "Oh your baby has colored eyes like you." And well even on her page people who have not seen the pictures would ask "Does your baby have colored eyes?" Just by the way they said it, I'm assuming they meant eyes that aren't brown. This was a first to me and I would just like to know if anyone else has seen or heard people say something like this. Are they saying it because brown is common while other colors are not? I thought at first maybe the person forgot to type a word but now I've seen more than one person refer to non-brown eyes as "colored."

Brown or black eyes are a more common eye color then blue, green or even gray eyes. I've never said your child has colored eyes. I've always said your child has dark eyes which can mean black or brown in color. I say my eyes are a light brown but they look black unless you shine a light in them. I say my daughter has blue eyes because she does like her bad and my mom. Blue and green eyes are ressevie eye colors so both parents have to have the blue or green eyed gene. If they don't then the dominate one the dark eyes have it.

I always usually refer to eye color as the color or either "dark eyes" or "light eyes" and when eye light can refer to a light brown color which I have seen. I've only seen a few use the term "colored eyes" which I've asked others in person and they too were wondering the same as me why someone would use that term since brown is a color too.

Black isn't a color so that could be correct for black eyes if the person knows that I think they would understand that one. I also think people might be scared to say brown or black eyes as referring to skin tone and not trying to sound racist. I've used dark eyes or light eyes most people know what people are saying when they say that. If I can tell the eye color for sure then I will say what the color is.

I never heard people say that but I know about contact lenses they say too: brown is not a colour. I don't know what it should be if it's not a colour. Also I live in a country where most people have blue, grey or geen eyes, so not brown at all.

That's how it is where I am. I find it amusing when some of my friends say blue eyes are rare because I see them all day, everywhere. Dark blue, light blue and multiple other shades of it and there are also there are many of the grey and green eye folks.

I have never heard of that kind of distinction being made. To me brown and black eyes are eye colors just like any other color of eyes such as light blue, dark blue, green, hazel, grey, etc. I had hazel eyes for many years but as I got older they turned to a dark blue; it was several years before I finally got around to changing the color on my driver's license. My sister has brown eyes and I don't remember what color my parents had. Someone else mentioned that blue eyes, etc. are recessive and that both parents have to have them for a child to have them. I think that is not exactly true. I think both parents have to carry the recessive gene but that the parents eye color doesn't have to be the recessive color.

I believe they both have to carry the recessive gene. I have a friend who has a child with blue eyes(they may be hazel though) and well her and the father have brown eyes. As for grandparents, only her mother has blue eyes. As for me I had blue eyes as a kid from what I seen in pictures but now they are hazel. However they seem to change with what I'm wearing because I swear at times they sometimes look blue or even have a greyish tint to them. And around my pupil is a little brown as well. I know back in 10th grade when we were studying genes we were told eye color is very complex.

My youngest grand daughter has blue eyes, her brother has normal brown eyes, my friends too comment and say her eyes are colored, just a way of telling lol.

i think it was because most of the people living in this planet has black/brown eyes. So for the majority of us, it's really a special thing that someone has colour eyes! i think brown and black are considered more to black and any other coulour would therefore be referred to as colored eyes!

I think they just refer to the other iris colors as colored because they're literally "colorful". Others have green, blue or other shades. In my country, we rarely use that term because majority of Filipinos have either black or brown iris colors.

That makes the most sense to me. I know the people who I seen said it come from places where the majority of people have brown eyes. But I've seen people from the same area as them who will just use the actual color such as "you have nice blue eyes" or "i love your green eyes."

This is the first I'm hearing "colored" being used in reference to the eyes. I've known it used by elderly folk when they're talking about someone with dark skin, but for eyes its always been the exact shade. If its blue its just blue or green is just green and so on.

I usually notice that people are always complimenting blue/gray/green eyes more than black or brown eyes. I think most people find it more attractive? Even my own mother, whenever she sees people with blue/gray/green eyes, she always compliments them and also gushes about how beautiful those eyes are. I can appreciate any eye color. In fact, I want brown eyes more than any other color. Whenever I am buying contact lenses, I usually opt for brown ones.

It's actually what Shybear88 has mentioned in his first responds on this discussion. Black and brown are the common colors in human eyes. But in where i live, we refers brown as colors too since most people here has a black eyes. While others colored eye we also refers it as rare, instead, it is very rare and most people we seen have colored eyes other than brown are actually wearing contact lenses.
