Making meals from scratch?

I am 21 from the UK, and I do most of the cooking in my house. Since I was a child, I always liked to help my parents to cook whenever I could, and this has meant that my cooking skills have been well developed over the course of the past twenty one years. I like to make meals from scratch because I think that there is a much better sense of achievement at the end when you do this rather than if you eat out or if you simply choose to use food just from packets that were prepared for you. Although it does take a little bit more time, I don't think that there is anything better than the feeling of being able to eat food that you have prepared from scratch all by yourself. What about you? Do you like cooking and making meals from scratch, or would you rather eat out?

I try to only make our food from scratch. Not that we never eat out but it is a rare thing and something we do only when away or special occasions. I like to cook for one so I do not find it a chore and It relaxes me so when upset my family gets lots of goodies. Second I try to avoid over processed foods and preservatives as well as hormones and genetically engineered foods. I want to be healthy and those things just aren't.

I think you're right about the processed foods. I always say that if things don't grow naturally in the world, then they're just not things that we should be eating as part of our every day diet. A lot of parents just cook junk food for their children while they're growing up, and this can mean that this is all that they learn to cook. When I was at college, the number of people who didn't know how to even switch an oven on was untrue, and I ended up doing a lot of the cooking there because I just wanted everyone to be healthy!

My Grandmother used to make jam and would give it to me when I was younger, so I am used to home made things around the place. I grow my own strawberries to make jam out of and this is something that I get great satisfaction from. My partner is one of those people who complain about their health whilst still eating rubbish, so that is something that I am certainly very familiar with in my own life. The amount of sugar and salt that are added to foods that we don't make ourselves is untrue, but most people don't even realise it!

mmmmm been waiting for those strawberriesran out of that jam, the balsamic strawberry jelly and champagne and strawberry jelly a while ago now! I use very little salt in our foods opting more for herbs and now find processed foods way too salty for my tastes.

I wish I could buy pure homemade food - ha ha!!! I do love to cook - and I do pride in meals from scratch . . . but admittedly these days it's hard to find the time to do scratch for every meal, every day. My brain knows that scratch meals are cheaper, possibly healthier, and tastier - so I'd rather NOT eat out . . . but my clock/watch tells me otherwise. I like it when I can spend the time and not feel rushed . . . and it's great when my little ones get involved in the cooking (it's a skill I hope they enjoy in their futures). What can they possibly learn from yelling out food names at a drive-thru, right?

That is true - time and effort! I know a lot of them say "home style" as well, but it sure doesn't have the taste of home! Restaurants tend to add a lot of salt or butter and who knows what - tastes like they threw a bunch of canned stuff together! My kids will only eat my spaghetti sauce - all made from scratch. They don't like the jarred stuff (neither do I) - and often the restaurant sauce tastes like jarred! Now I'm sure my scratch costs more than the jarred and takes longer to make (versus a twist of a jar lid) - but then again I make a lot so it lasts us a while and I can make other dishes from it too.

I don't cook every day, but when I do, I cook from scratch. In the first place, those "convenience" foods are usually more expensive than I can make from scratch, secondly, homemade food tastes better and thirdly, homemade is better for you, even if you don't use the absolute best ingredients. Meals that come boxed or in bags have so many chemicals and "enhancers" added that I wonder what was wrong with the food that it had to have so much help to make it edible!

Toss in the fact that they really aren't that good! Marie Calendars chicken pot pie is the only thing that I think is Really good...but look at the sodium in there anda the fat!!! Needless to say..it is a treat for me to get one...once or twice a month and then I watch what I eat afterwards to make sure I compensate for the fat and sodium. I am weird...I'd almost rather have one of these pot pies than a sweet fattening dessert! But I have tired other frozen dinners/meals...they are okay in a pinch or just to have on hand should Ijust not be able to get to the store and the fridge is empty or something to have for a really quick meal and then get gone..but as a regular...they just aren't that good. I'd rather cook all weekend and freeze the stuff and then reheat it during the week (make my own frozen dinners!) than to buy at the store. And they aren't that cheap anymore either! I remember when the Banquet TV dinners in the aluminum trays were the hottest thing in the dinner world! Oh, yeah, their salisbury steak, corn and mashed potatos are the best ever!!!! But again..just not to healthy and they used to be 88cents! Now, they go on sale for $1.49 every once in a while sometimes. I treat myself to one of them every now and then too..only when they are on sale tho! And the MC potpies go on sale for 2/$6 and that isn't bad considering you get so much chicken and veges inside. Can't believe I am going on about a pot pie/frozen dinner!! I think I need a life!

Hubby and I both cook and we do mostly from scratch. We sometimes play a little mental game: "IF we could find this food in a restaurant, what do you think they would charge us?" I love to be able to use fresh herbs and spices and season things as I like and know what I am eating.

That sounds like a really fun game to play, I might try to play it myself next time I am trying to cook a meal! One of the things that I have noticed about being out when I am eating is that the bigger portions always seem to be cheaper than the smaller ones. If you go to a more expensive place to eat, the prices will get higher but the plates and the portions will get smaller at the same time. Once I had a friend who said that they paid £20 for one small scoop of ice cream with a mint leaf, and that seems to be completely ridiculous wherever you go; I could feed myself for an entire week on that amount of money!

I enjoy eating out now and then but I always prefer to make my own food. I enjoy cooking and trying new recipes so I find I have allot of fun cooking from scratch and then that way I know I should like the food because I made it.

One of the things that I enjoy the most about eating out is seeing the kinds of things that they put on their menus, as I like to try and see if I can cook meals for myself that I have enjoyed whilst being out somewhere on a special occasion. I think that everyone needs time away from the kitchen at some point, and eating out gives the person who normally cooks a great chance to have a rest and just enjoy the food without having to worry about cooking it themselves or about washing up all of the dishes and things that they have used after the meal.

from high school since i love to cook and help my mother in the kitchen, i prefer food that made from the food they buy, because the food tastes good when we are making we also know the ingredients of the food we make, while selling food on that we do not necessarily know where the ingredients....

Helping your Mother in the kitchen is an excellent way to be able to learn how to cook, and I think that if more parents taught their children like this, the world would be a much better, happier and healthier place. I was taught to cook from when I was young, and because of that I know exactly how to do things these days which means that I am able to cook for myself. My friends who have never been taught are not able to cook, and they are the unhealthy ones because of the fact that the only thing that they choose for themselves is fast food.

I like doing both! I like cooking at home, but hate doing the dishes. I love eating out, but hate having to go through all the activity to get there! Money is of course the main factor. I hate the high prices of resturants these days for what little you get. But I was raised on home cooking so it isn't much a big deal... I just hate doing the dishes and clean up! But I do enjoy baking and cooking. I even enjoyed when I was a full time working mother of 2 and did a lot of cooking on the weekends and then packed it right for meals during the week that I could just toss in the oven to bake (before microwaves... and I hate microwave food anyway!) But a big crock of chili or spaghetti sauce, or stew and then split into 2-3 meals. A rack of enchilladas for the family put in the oven to heat up. It was fun, we got fresh baked home oooked healthy meals and it was light on the dishes and clean up during the week when it was so hectic anyway! Now with just me and my husband I don't cook much. He hates my cooking (nothing wrong with my cooking he just thinks he is better, however, never cooks himself!) so he won't eat anything I cook, so that is nice to.. Light on the dishes for just me..he does his own!

Wow, how do you do that? You really have to be creative or be a magician to be able to do that.

i would love to be able to prepare meals from scratch..though it takes time but it always feels great when you are able to eat and serve food for you and your family through this effort. if i have more time, i would love to do it that way..but if i don't feel like doing it, then i would much rather prepare an instant meal or maybe eat out.

When i get my turns at cooking i always make the most of it. I cook a lot of my dinners from scratch but because of school i have a lot of homework so i sometimes have to get already prepared stuff. I try to cook from scratch often so that when i get a house of my own i will have the necessary skills to cook for myself and my family. Blessed you be

I think that actually having the time to cook something is one of the major factors that can put a lot of people off cooking. I know that my younger brother will never cook anything because he is at school at the moment as well, so has to spend a lot of his time doing homework and revising for the exams that he has in the summer. But even if you don't cook from scratch now, it is great that you feel as though you're going to have the skills to be able to do so when you move out of the family home when you leave school.

We have takeaway food,ready-made food and pre-packed food which i like alot. I like the fatc that there are chinese food restaurants where food is geven fro home at such a little expense. It's great you do not have to put so much effrt in cooking something that can be eaten.I am not a cook and whenever i try to cook something tasty or delicious it turns out that it is just a dream and i am spending my time uselessly.Iget easily disappointed and frustrated and it happens evryday. So i go to KFC ,MCdonalds or Burger king or local corner chinese restaurant to buy food. i can afford it. I feel population cares too much about me. It's just my luck i have that oppurtinity.I wouldn't spend my freetime on cooking and wouldn't start from the scratch.Feel free to do whatever you want but i think you are loosing your time too much which can be spend on friends.
