A vacation without modern conveniences

Every summer a couple of summer camps take place on the small islands in Denmark. They are open for both adults and children, and it is a cheap and very simple way to spend the summer. The participants sleep in tents and cook their own food. There are no computers, stereos and tvs. Instead of those things people play the guitar and sing together. There are no electricity and no hot water, so if you choose to spend part of your holiday there you have to live without those things. The participants don't know eachother when they arrive, but they usually find new friends during the time that they spend there. During the days they chat, spend time at the beach, learn new crafts etc and at night they gather around the bonfire.
What do you think about that kind of vacation? Do you like the idea of spending part of your holiday at a place like that or do you find it too primitive? Why?

Oh yes!!! That is the best vacation, being with nature and enjoying peace and quiet. I have been to various places too, some that do have electric to ones where we are literally in the middle of nowhere. I remember camping out around the mountains in a friend's backyard. (His backyard wasn't a fenced in yard, but a national forest). The best part of that trip was waking up and seeing deer right outside the tent..

No, we really haven't done much camping outside our backyard and usually it is my son and I because my husband can't lay on the ground with his bad back. But we might at the end of June, because my neighbor's daughter invited us to her b-day party which happens to be in the same area as our friend. Though I thought if anything, we'd travel the 3 hours, go to the party for a short time, and then drive back, but when my husband heard where it is, he wants to go camping and he might end up on our friend's couch if he can't handle it..lol

Your friend's backyard sounds like a great place to camp. I think that camping is an enjoyable way to spend a vacation. My friends and I sometimes went camping in the past and we always had a great time. My favourite place was a place by the sea. When we went camping there we went swimming early in the morning. The water was really cold, but we had fun
A deer outside the tent sounds like a great way to wake up, I have never tried that. Do you still go camping today? I haven't tried it for years, but I have many happy memories from the past.

In Samoa I had the joy of staying somewhere just as primitive. I slept in a fale which in a thatched beach hut. I laid on a mat and not a bed. It has flaps in case it rained. There was no electricity and I had to have an oil lamp after dark.
I believe the summer camps in Denmark would be a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. I would be happy to sleep in one of the tents. Due to having a vegan diet I would take my own food I think. I would enjoy making new friends I am sure. It would not be challenging for me to go without my laptop for a week or so.

Your experience in Samoa sounds very different but interesting. I haven't participated in any of the Danish summer camps yet, but I have read about them on the website and it sounds like something that I would like to try in the future. I think that it would be an enjoyable experience, and it could be interesting to meet some new people that way. I don't think that it would be a big challenge for me to be away from my laptop for a few weeks. When I visit another country I never use the internet at all, because I am too busy with other things and I think that I would feel the same way of I participated in one of those camps.

This is called living with Nature. In such camps where there are absolutely no modern gadgets or facilities, the participants have to learn to live as the tribals lived in forests. To get a real feel of nature even tents should be avoided and there should be no mattresses to sleep on.Shelters should be made up of whatever is available in the forests and fires should be started by rubbing wood on wood.If you have seen Bear Grylls in the Discovery channel series 'Man vs Wild' or 'Survivorman' or 'Man,Woman,Wild' you will get an idea how these people survive when nothing is available. The type of camps you have mentioned are more or less hobby camps where one gets the chance to make new friends and learn new trades at the same time living as close to Nature as possible. These camps are good especially for children as it teaches them to respect Nature, discipline and independance at the same time it makes them strong willed and tough to face whatever battles in life when they become adults.

Yes, those camps are a kind of hobby camps where people spend part of their vacation. I think that the people who participate do it because they want to spend a simple vacation close to nature and because they like the idea of finding new friends who are interested in the same thing. I haven't had the chance to participate so far, but I would be interested in trying it one day. I think that you are right about the children, it is good for them to participate in something like that. They can learn something from the experience and they find new friends among the other children. I haven't seen the Discovery series that you mentioned, but it sounds interesting, I will see if I can find some of them on YouTube.

Hi porcospino
Sounds like a tempting offer - a vacation without the gadgets and among unknown people... I would definitely give it a try though I would be having an initial thought and reservations about "strangers" all around and together. Today's world has made feel me a little scared of being amidst strangers. But if these camps are each year, I think it would be safer and I would love to be a part of these...
It would definitely help me in making new friends, spending time all for myself and without gadgets means 100% myself... no fb, twitter or even mylot... and the idea of bonfires by the sea beach is exciting too...

I haven't tried it myself, but I have seen the website where you can read about the camps and I would like to try it one day. I think that it will be a different experience. The small islands are very peaceful and it would it would be a different experience to spend a spend vacation without any gadgets. Yes, bonfires by the sea sound very nice, and I think that it would be a memorable experience to sit by the bonfire, watch the sunset, and chat to my new friends. This summer I have to work, so I won't be able to do it this year, but maybe I will get the chance to participate in the future.

It's great! I wish we could have the same vacation here. I like it.
In this city, everyone don't have enough time for each other. They must work and earn for life. So, they're not interested in other people. At night, they watch TV instead of talk to neighbor or friends. So, a vacation like that is great!

I grew up with camping in nature. My parents would go camping every chance they got. So, yes I would go and I don't mind leaving civilization behind for a while. I don't mind taking a break from what I call our "digital life".

I never went camping with parents, they usually prefered to stay in hotels when we went on vacation together, but I have gone camping with my friends as an adult. I have some very nice memories from those vacations, we always had a lot of fun. Like you I don't mind taking a break from the computer and all of the other things that are usually a part of my daily life. I haven't participated in the camps that I mentioned when I started the discussiion, but I have thought about it, and I would like to try it one day.

Primitive camps can be quite relaxing. Physically you work harder than you are used to but you sleep well and feel invigorated by being away from everything that takes your energy, especially electrical things.

I love stuff like that. It sounds awesome. Away from the concrete jungle. No technology? I love that. Peace and quite and relaxing. It actually is very therapeutic. I remember the days when I was in the boy scouts. We had to cook our food ourselves, make fire with no matches. I'm actually a survivalist and I love the outdoors. And I so wish I could do that sometime with my busy schedule.

A vacation is meant to be a getaway from the daily grind. It means to explore the unseen, without the trappings of your comfort zone, meet different people, compare how blessed you are, be to places you have never seen even in travel brochures, see how the world was before commercialization hit it, listen to the breeze whistling through the trees, the river drumming on rock and sandy shores, add the strumming guitar sounds to it and make your own music, eat food the way it was before microwave was invented, look and enjoy the genuine smile of a stranger in reality and not in some virtual networking site, when faces were not from facebook. Enjoy nature as God gave it to us and not like Man sold it to us with his glib talk.
This is the only place on earth where you will still see a live butterfly, as flowers still bloom here in abundance.
Here a tree still take years to grow, because by the time you return from your vacation two skyscrapers have already robbed you of the little skylight you had before you went for this vacation.
Enjoy nature when we can and God bless.

How long is this summer camp? Not many people would be interested in this concept since many of us are so used to modern conveniences.
Some people would love to spend time this way. Parents could show their children about living ways back to more than 20 years ago when internet was barely existed.
