Has anyone opened a business that has to deal with food before? Like a catering business or a restaurant? I have always loved to cook and although I never went to collage to learn how to become a chef. I still would very much like to open a restaurant someday. I have some really great ideas for my small town in Nevada and I have been working for a kitchen as a prep cook for about 2 years now so I have some idea of what is involved in opening a business. I have also ordered cooking textbooks from collages to kind of teach myself without spending the thousands of dollars I cant afford to go to collage. Is there any advice someone can offer to anyone who is interested in starting a business in the food industry?

I haven't done it but my daughter has been interested in doing it for some time so she's looked into it. You would have to have money to start, of course. You'd need a building plus approved stainless steel pots, sinks, etc., but you probably know that. Other than that, you will have to get a certain business license from your state and once you have the equipment, there's nothing to stop you. The location is critical and it may not be a good idea to take over a building from a failed restaurant for that reason. My daughter is a good cook and has spent time prepping and cooking as well as in management. I suggest that you get as varied experience as you can by working all stations they'll let you, get some financial backing and go for it.

Yes I have looked into a lot of the things I will need. I have a long time to go before I can even afford half of it. However, I am also looking at going into it with a friend. Thank you for your interest. Hope your daughter succeeds. Know what is funny is that my mother passed away 3 years ago. Before that I had no idea how to cook. I hated the kitchen and I hated just cooking. Then when she passed away I realized how much I didn't know about cooking. Funny thing is I couldn't even scramble eggs without burning them. However, when she passed it was three days before thanksgiving. I decided I wasn't going to let our family gathering even end because I knew that she never would have wanted that so I decided to cook everything for the holiday. I managed to make a 20 pound which I was not graceful in cleaning by the way and I stuffed it with stuffing (I learned the hard way the stuffing had to be cooked before going in the turkey) then I put it in the oven with the times and temp I found online. It turned out just like my mothers except for the stuffing part. :) I managed to cook everything that was needed and make the pies with little instructions. I just went with my taste buds and how I remembered it tasted. I just made most of it up. For temperatures and times I went with the boxes but other than that it was all me. Everyone loved my dinner and after that I found a new love for cooking. Ever since I have cooked every single night and I have gotten so good that I dont even look at recipes and I have made up my own concoctions. In three years I have learned a lot from how to cook different kinds of main dishes from different ethnic groups and the knife techniques and etc. I have determined that baking isn't really as easy for me as it is to cook and barbecue main dishes. Like I said wish luck to your daughter.

i worked in a catering for quite a long time and it really feels good once you are established but we do all know that we will not reach to the peak if we will not start from the bottom so i suggest try first seeking for customers in offices for their everydays snack and lunch and with that, little by little you can achieve what you want ..

I've never opened a restaurant before but it's something that I would like to hopefully do at some point in my life. What I really want to do is start a farm/ranch but on that ranch I would like to create a little restaurant as well where I can make meals from the food that I have grown. I really enjoy cooking but like you I've never had any schooling on it but I think that cooking is one thing that you don't really need schooling for to be great at. I think that with experience and effort you can easily become as good as a gourmet chef. All it takes is variation in your recipes and pushing the boundaries of what you cook so that you can incorporate new recipes and methods. I think the best advice for you is to focus on what you want to cook and how you can create the best tasting food for your guests and I think a more important aspect is to try and make your food good for people as well. That is my goal at least with starting my own restaurant. Put care and effort in the way you make your food and don't take short takes because they show up in the taste of your food. Good luck with your dreams and I hope that you can accomplish your goals. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

I was actually thinking of opening up a restaurant up that was healthy and organic when possible. Like there will be tons of different kind of salads, homemade salad dressing, fruit salads, tuna salads, egg salads, sandwiches that are very healthy and only with fresh cooked meat I made not processed. Have maybe fruit and special dips for the fruit for one of the appetizers. Maybe have my homemade chips and dip so that they are healthy but yummy. Make buffalo wings that are not deep fried and only cooked in healthy oils. Also make my own barbecue sauces that have little to no salt and lots of flavor. I also want to serve ice creams and frozen yogurts as desert that I have made there, maybe have different flavors on different weeks so that it keeps the customers coming. I also would like to bring back foods from like the 1950's. Good luck with you as well and thank you. You are right anything is possible. After all people made it to the moon right?
