mirror mirror on the wall, could you live without a mirror?

i recently saw a photograph in an interior design magazine, maybe, of a bathroom with no mirror over the sink, but rather a plaque stating, "you look fine". in the past few days we have been redecorating one of our bathrooms and the mirror has been removed and i have been surprised at how disconcerted i have been by this...could the psychoartist actually be vain? what if we had no mirrors in our home? how about you community friends, could you live without a mirror in your bathroom, or at all?

How we look should be our concern alone and so a mirror is inevitable. Just as knowing whether we are good in something would be best judged by us rather than others who would be more often saying that just to please us. I have a few mirrors all over the place and before I step out I look into one that somehow satisfies me more than the others!

I like to make sure my hair is not standing on end or something like that but I do not use makeup so I rarely need it for more than that. I would like a full length mirror so I would know if my clothes look ok but that is not going to happen so I will simply believe that the clothes I decided to wear look ok.

Hello the psychoartist I do not currently have a mirror in my comfort room and I haven't missed it at all. I don't think that I would have any problem living without a mirror in the house. I do like walls of mirrors because they make the space look bigger, but I don't have to have it, or any mirror. I have gone days, weeks, months, maybe even years without consulting a mirror. Why bother? I can't see myself so who cares? Besides, my partner will tell me if there is a problem such as the hair sticking up, and that's not really a problem. The only mirrors I really need are to drive the truck.

No mirror in our bathroom, but every room has mirrors. Of course we need a mirror to see how we looks. I can't imagine having a messy hair going on for a date :P

I personally feels like looking in the mirror only if I go out or to check my back. The mirror tells me more or less how I look like in the eyes of the others. I try to keep my look normal and ordered. If I see someone that doesn't care about how he looks like , it tells me he is not responsible about other things and maybe he doesn't consider what other people think about him. So , I don't look in the mirror every hour , but ,a couple of times : in the morning , and before I go out or after having a bath.

No mirror is unacceptable to me. I need it to confirm whether i fit into dress.

I have lived without mirror for almost seven years. I don't have mirror in my apartment that time maybe because I really don't need it much. I don't wear make ups or style my hair in the morning before going to work. Now that I am already married, though we have mirror at home, I don't really use it because I am already used to not having it. I like that bathroom you mentioned and the 'you look fine' thing. That would really make me smile and I might say thank you in return. But I guess, we cannot really remove mirror in bathrooms because people usually go there to check themselves, do make up retouch and see if they have something on their face.

hi paper_doll! it is refreshing to hear from someone who is free from commitment to the mirror! the "you look fine" plaque made me smile too...it would be an interesting decorating option! peace and blessings to you!

Having no mirror would be a major problem although mirrors could be substituted with something else, I'm not talking about some other reflective surface but the mirror could be replaced by something like a camera an screen . That is if we are actually talking about a world without mirrors. As for the thought of having no mirror in the bathroom, I think I would be okay with that . I do spend a lot of time in front of the mirror life sure would be very tough without them or if I had less of them but then again the point of having them is just to see what we look like there could be a slightly more expensive but more efficient substitute for that like I said before , a really good camera mounted on a very good screen, That's better than a mirror because in a mirror we see a laterally inverted image of what is in front of it but in the above case it would show us the way everybody else sees us rather than a mirror image.

Yeah may be in the future that could be achievable but currently it would be too expensive or very cumbersome . Or we could just use the cameras we have now but they either require better lighting or take a long time to display an image or are too expensive . As for the mirror world being a parallel reality : that's a very interesting hypothesis all by itself . Although it rules out some facts it can be used to create some very good horror plots for writing quality novels and producing entertaining TV shows & movies. You remember that movie Mirrors it was released about two years ago and was a horror flick about some sort of a Devil trapped inside the mirror world . Modeled around the same hypothesis of mirror images being more than mere reflections . Do you believe that? I mean would you consider it to be a possibility ? Did you watch the movie I'm talking about ? Was the concept of the movie given by Agatha Christie ? P.S.:sorry for the butt-load of questions , I just had a lot of 'em.

billutheguy, i haven't seen that movie, but i will look it up, it sounds fascinating! i don't know if that one was based on agatha christie, but you are right, that reflection thing is a great technique for plots...mr. psychoartist and i saw that technique used on an episode of monk!

We are creatures of habit and a change like that could be quite disconcerting until you become accustomed to being without said mirror. Normally, I use a mirror to put my make-up on and to try clothes on before I go out. With my new jewellery making hobby though I use the mirror a lot more to see how things look. No, I could not live without a mirror but to see how some people dress, I reckon lots of folk do so.

I am no beauty. And I am not vain but even I need a mirror! I need it t brush my teeth, wash my face , and to do my hair! For work I wear my hair up. I use a mirror to put it up. I can't even think how I would look if I had no mirror! It isn't vain to want to keep your hair from looking like a bee's nest is it?

Self- confidence can happen at Any age. Ask yourself, do I feel good about the way I look? If it is a yes , then move on. If not see what you can change. Curly hair can be straightened!Easy. It is when you wish your hue was different or for a gender that you may have a Huge problem!

I could do without a mirror in my entire home. I like having one but my looks have gone south and I could do without one. Don't need to be reminded at how much i have changed. I think mirrors can be very decorative and I was surprised to find how many I have in my home.

hi celtic eagle, you are right about mirrors being decorative, my mother has always been partial to extremely ornate mirrors in her home...the psychoartist and her family like mirrors in our home for the quality of reflecting light.. the psychoartist needs and likes light both for painting and for the temperament! interesting point of view, thank you!

Hello psychoartist! Well, if there was a time we had first experienced having no mirrors at all, we can defnitely live with it. Say for example, we all live in a world where no mirrors exist, would you really care look for some? I guess I could live without it, only if others do live without it as well...

woman facing mirror - what if there's no mirror?
yeah, if the world cannot see their ownself in mirrors or anything seen in reflections, can we know what we look like and what is there for us to realize on our ownselves? I guess that's the importance of mirrors...

I think it will be hard for me to live without a mirror, I cannot put on my contact lens without mirror and i cannot use eyeglasses because wearing eyeglasses makes me nausea. I also need mirror to check my appearance although I dont wear makeup just face powder and eyeliners sometimes, I just want to make sure that i look tidy & make sure that i brushed my hair well, I also need mirror when I try a new clothes to see if the clothes looks good on me or not. Probably if we dont concern too much on how do we look then living without a mirror wont be a problem, but we get used to care on our appearance so it would be hard to live without a mirror. Most of human try to look in a good shape infront of other people, and mirror helps us to check our appearance.

Ow , contact lenses are pain in the eyes sometimes. Ha ha , thanks to my parents , I made an eye laser surgery to fix the sight of one of my eyes. So , now , I don't need contact lenses. I think the mirror has more advantages , not only to check how we look like , but to find spots on our skin , to see what's going on with our skin , face... I assume this discussion is about how we look like , so I say I only care about wether my hair is not messed up , my clothes are not clumsy...

I have a mirror in my bedroom.I look myself in it only after having a shower and combing my hair.Thereafter I never touch it.By nature I have been careless about my looks. So I have no problem if I have a mirror or not.All I know is if I harbor good thoughts in my mind and love God,then I would look nice.My face would look soft and shining and my eyes reflect my tender heart.

Of course, psychoartist,I believe in the inner beauty of a person. If you are kind,co-operative and God loving, then the beauty of your heart would reflect in your face and perhaps you would not need any make-up.

Well it's easy to assume that maybe it's vanity I mean that's an easy conclusion. however is it possible that maybe just maybe it's not vanity but instead that you don't like change? I mean yeah it's just a mirror but if you are used to it being there then it might bother you when it is not. Aside from that, I mean we are all used to mirrors especially in bathrooms. This is engrained in us is it not? Try removing or changing something else in your environment and see if there are any changes to you're emotions on it, and I bet there will be for sure. The bigger the change as in how used to or engrained it is in you're mind the more it will disrupt you. I am like an old man myself, I hate change.. except what's jingling in my pocket!

right musicscout! very perceptive comments, thank you! it could be the resistance to change, and that would mean the psychoartist is not vain and superficial, hahaha! yes, some things are engrained though, like people may feel it is odd to see the cookstove in one's bedroom or bathroom...thanks for sharing!

I can't imagine a bathroom without a mirror. I have a mirror above my fireplace. A mirror is in my bedroom and my daughter's bedroom has a children's mirror in it. In my wet room I have two mirrored cabinets and I use one of them to help me put my contact lenses in.

I could not live without a mirror. Not in a vain kind of way, either. I'm not majorly concerned with my outward appearance but, I wear contacts & NEED the mirror to see in order to put them in. I'm not capable of doing it without looking. Also, I am self conscience if I have something in my teeth or something so I need a tooth-check! But, I only have the medicine cabinet mirror in my house. It is used to make sure I'm properly hygiened. 95% of the time my hair gets thrown up in a ponytail or a ball & only my bangs need to be straightened... I can do that without a mirror. BUT, I can't insert my contacts without a mirror... or be able to floss properly...

hi fran429! you bring up a very valid point about the contact lenses...alas, the psychoartist also must wear them and has a hard enough time dealing with them with a mirror! and proper hygiene is not vain, it is healthy! thanks for your response and have a great day!

Yes i could. Have tried it and i wasn't even bothered without a mirror. From the time that i was 7 years old, I started to live away from my parents because of school. Then we travel most of the time and when i transferred to a new house we didn't have a mirror for a couple of days and i was fine with it. Sometimes i don't even look at myself in the mirror. For some reason i'm not comfortable with that. I'm confident that i look fine though without having to check myself in the mirror. Maybe i'm a bit odd.

Well, I think I could, but, on the other hand, I need to see how I'm looking before I go out of home. And I'm used to mirror, although I'm not always in front of it. Mirror has become a need in our life and help us to see more than we can see without it. Further I've seen ophthalmologists that use this mirrors in their devices so that they can examine better the eyes. If there weren't any mirrors we'd see us in the water or on another polished surface.
