It has not rained even for a single day here; as I have said in my discussion; it rains on the day of Sital sasti’ festival; the hindu festival of wedding of God Shiva and Parvati. Masons, labors are working in my home on roof top in sun without any umbrella etc, they cover head with thick cotton like a turban; they say they are habituated of working in high temperature of 48 degrees Celsius. My wife gives them water bottles chilled in freeze . Today none has come, I came to know 2 of them had sunstroke and they are in hospital. I had suffered from this once in 1978, I was then working in a college; it was the last working day, my family was in Sambalpur; so I took food in a hotel at 1pm, drove in my Rajdoot motor cycle, nonstop 55 kilometers, thought it was too hot, I couldn’t feel anything. When I reached home my wife said, my face was looking red, I fell down, entire body burning like fire; though I was not hospitalized it took almost a week to get back to normal; since that day I don’t go out in sun, if the distance is more. I was given meshed green potato that is heated in fire and black salt added to it. I am also told if you keep a raw WHITE onion in your pocket, there is less chance of getting sun-stroke. My son keeps one; ladies working in fields keep one near waste tucked to the sari. Have you ever had sun-stroke? Any remedy you know? Please share and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Prof. Dr. Bhuwan Saraf. PhD 11th June 2012.

Hi Bhuwan, I just cannot imagine so much heat. The worse we have here is a little over 33ºC and just for a few days around Christmas. What I know about it is that you have to protect your head from direct heat and drink a lot of water. But my father, a biochemist, told me I should not drink very cold water but just at room temperature or even lukewarm. Iimagine that we must also replenish the salt we lose. Now there are beverages that have the right amount of electronits. Years ago we did not have such things. Take care and keep away from the sun.

Take care, friend. How`s your health? My lymphoma is on remission. The oncologist has let me go for vacations, so I`m going to the sun for 2 weeks with a friend. We are in Winter now and it`s cold and rainy.

Hi there a few years ago, i went swimming during noon and it was really hot. i was so hyper that i kept swimming in the pool in broad daylight. suddenly i felt so weak and i just felt like i was going to pass out. i started to become pale. and my companions said that i was sun stroke. but i also remembered i didn't get to eat breakfast that time. they were so worried they got me some orange juice so i can have some sugar in my body. i was so weak, the life guard carried me to the car and we all just went home LOL. i know onions have very powerful anti oxidants. i could eat a whole one if only it tastes and smells good haha.

Personally I hear about things like this, and people getting too cold from rain, and snow in this area as well. It just makes no sense that there continues to be jobs out there that do not really pay enough for the time they push people to have to work outside like this. Due to my being Diabetic there is No way that I could handle a job like this out in the direct sun over 80 for very long at all.

During our centennial celebration in 1976 I did get heat stroke. I was standing out in the heat with my grandmother waiting in line for something and I fainted. It was heat stroke. I have heard of headaches and such too. White onion in my pocket, huh? Interesting.

Sounds like it's very hot out there, Professor2010! I guess more than a remedy, I know you should take care to do whatever it takes to prevent heat stroke . . . like drinking a lot of water, staying away from caffeine drinks, taking breaks from being in the heat. I like to bring a spray bottle with me filled with ice water to spray the kids if we are at an activity that requires us to be out in the sun for a long length of time. My father is a gardener by profession, and he works in the hot sun all day. He wears long sleeves and long pants (instead of open wear) and always wears a hat - for protection. If I may ask, how does carrying a raw white onion help from getting sun stroke??? It is fairly hot here too as we approach summer . . . I don't even want to know how hot it's really going to be as July/August comes around. Take care and be careful not to get heat stroke!!!!

Yeah in India the number of heat stroke deaths is increasing thanks to the scorching heat this year. Well i have never experienced any such horrendous situation but i recommend that people should carry a bottle of water with them if they move out under hot sun and avoid loitering on the streets if they do not have that important work to do.
