What tools do you keep handy when writing?

If I am writing on paper, I like to keep a baby names book near by, as well as any notes or ideas I may have scribbled. I like to keep a drink near by as well. If I'm on a computer I like to have my software open of course, and I like to try to stay off the internet, even if it is related to my work, it is far too easy to get distracted. Once, I even bought a very old windows 3.8 i think it was called, correct me if i'm wrong. Anyway it was the oldest laptop known to man, and all it was capable of pretty much was writing. In a very notepad style form. It had a floppy drive, so I could stay focused and write, then transfer it to floppy, and to my computer. Another tool I have used in the past is the computers voice recognition software. You talk and it types what you say. Of course, you have to speak clearly and train your computer to recognize your voice. I found that a hard way of doing what I do. But I used it if I was just blurting ideas out. Once they were down, I would sift through them and see if I wanted to do anything with them. What are some of the tools that you use when writing?

when i was younger i use to LOVE to write. i would write little short stories just for fun. it also helped me with my grammar. my grandma and my grandpa use to read them and they said they were really good. i would have loved to publish a few of them but i dont have them anymore and i am sure they were not good enough lol. well i have thought about getting back in to writing and the tools i always have around me is i would use the computer to type it but like you said it is easy to get distracted but usually once i get in the flow of writing that is all i want to do. also i will use the internet to get ideas if i get stumped on what needs to come next. the baby book idea is a good idea i never thought of that lol i may have to keep that in mind and use the internet to find some new and diffrent names :) i also like to have a drink and sometimes a snack while i brain storm and think. i will have paper beside me so that if i have a lot of ideas but having a hard time deciding when they need to happen i will write them all down and pick and choose and sometimes elaborate on the paper about them so when i go back to type it out i already know where the story should be headed. if i am writing it out and not using the computer then i like to have a few pencils with me or atleast a pencil sharpener and a trash can very close by haha. i also like to have pens and highlighters. sometimes if i mess up a page i will highlight the parts i like the most so i can remember and add then to the new page :) i have actually even used a chart i learned in school haha. i also on accasion will have a few books i like very much not to copyright them but to get cool ideas so that i can make my story as unique and diffrent than most stories that you read about now a days. do you sell any of your writing? or is for school? or maybe fun?

Glad I could help. Yes I think it is good thing that people think there stuff isn't good enough, you shouldn't be too cocky and think that you stuff is the best. Work can almost always be improved in some way or another. It would be my dream as well to have a book on the shelves of stores. To have people actually reading and enjoying something I wrote.

i agree i do not like people who are to cocky because most of them really are not as great as they make it out to be. i think that all stories even the ones that are already wrote and on the shelves could stand to be improved. they are all good books dont get me wrong but they can have more things in them :) i havent gave up on that dream but i do not think that it will happen. i am not really even interested in the fame or the money but i am looking forward to what you described.

I think everything can always be made better, but if we were ever improving everything, there would never be any books to read.

Besides the computer which has my writing along with any site I need up like dictionary.com and my writing site, I have somethign to drink and my music to get my creative mind going.

Well the internet wold be on the first draft, but when revising, you either need the internet version of a dictionary/thesaurus or the book, I find it much quicker using the internet. As for music, I only find it distracting if I am working on schoolwork, but for creative writing, it sets the mood...

I find the internet and music very distracting. I like to have peace and quiet.

I guess it depends on the person, and maybe the music too.

Well, no matter whether I am on a Computer, or writing something down on paper, I always have a lot of pens around in case the one I am using runs out of Ink, and enough paper to make sure I write my ideas down right. I usually also have something to snack on with me a lot of the time to help keep the energy flowing without having to leave and go get something to eat. Even when I am busy posting here in myLot I like to stay focused and this is a Good thing for sure.

Staying focused is a big deal. It's very important to be comfortable, it will make the time spend longer and more productive.

Whenever I am writing, I have to make sure that I am in a quiet room, or there is no way that I would be able to concentrate. I have to ensure that I have a bottle of water that I am able to sip at because I find that I work a lot better if I am able to keep myself nice and hydrated in that way. I also keep a note book by me as I find that it helps to be able to hand write notes as well as type them while I am trying to concentrate on the story. I love writing, but the environment has to be perfect or I don't manage to write a single word.

I keep a baby names book nearby too! I use it to name characters I come up with along the way. I also usually keep a paper notebook with my notes on characters, settings, plot-lines, and maybe a few maps. I'll typically jot a few notes down along the way or when I'm away from my computer. I also keep reference material. Right now I'm working on a book about a sci-fi summer camp and I've got some books on wilderness survival from the library to reference.

To work on a book maybe, probably not ready to trek out into the wilderness on my own. lol

It also depends on what you are writing. You could be writing your will or an artical or something non creative. You might not need all the inspiration.

Yes, you could be writing something non creative, and that would not takes as many tools and concentration. But if you are writing something that involves research, then you may still need focus.

I've written a couple on the computer, but most of the stuff I write is by hand. I like lots of paper, a comfortable pen that has good ink flow and I tend to just write - I'm really good at starting stories, not so good at finishing them...

This use to be my method for years and year. I was also good at starting and not so much at finishing. I had tons of unfinished stories. Some of them had some real potential.

The tool that I cannot be without when I'm writing is my thesaurus. I have other tools too but the thesaurus is indispensable. It helps make my writing more interesting as I won't be using the same words over and over again. Other than a thesaurus, I always have to have my dictionary nearby.

Those can be some handy tools. Usually used more commonly in second drafts and beyond.

MOre of typing than writing nowsday. - PC cheaper and technology will one day replace writing skills.
well, i got a pensil box and also a pensil holder , inside are rulers, glue, eraser, scissor, blade .Beside that i got assorted pens of various color and also tons of waste recycled paper. It more for writing cheque and filling forms. The rest are not so writing but typing on the keyboard and printing it out . THat is more nowsday typing rather than writing.

It's easier to start out typing since you will have to type it eventually anyway.

I make sure my favorite pen and notebook are beside my netbook. In most cases I don't use my pen and notebook but I just want them near. I make sure an online dictionary is also opened in case I need to check something. These are all I need.

Thanks for sharing. It's a good idea to have a backup. The online dictionary I'm not sure I get that, but if it works for you. I don't like having the internet involved when I'm writing, because I get too easily distracted.

I always keep a note pad nearby in case I need to quickly jot down any plot ideas or names which come into my head while writing. My laptop is a necessity, since it's where I do my writing. I like to keep a drink nearby as well, usually something sugary or with caffeine to give me a quick energy boost. The sugar seems to help me beat writer's block by giving my brain a boost of energy. Beyond that, I try to keep my workspace as uncluttered as possible, with the phone off the hook and my internet turned off.

That's a very good idea to turn off the internet. Sometimes I can get on a roll and write a lot of stuff, usually it get changed a lot later tho. I haven't found caffeine to work for me with writers block.

I always make sure that I have something to drink usually a cup of coffee or some water. I also like to have something to eat like fruit or candy. I write on my laptop and next to me I keep my handwritten notebook. In my notebook I write down my ideas when I am away from my home, and I usually carry my notebook in my bag when I leave the house. If I have left the house without my notebook and get a new idea for something that I want to write, I write some notes on other things like the back of a receipt, and when I return to my home I place it in my notebook. My notebook and the many small pieces of paper are the most important things that I need when I write.

sounds like a sound strategy. I used to do something similar to this, now I mostly keep things stored in my brain for later.

I like having a variety of writing utensils nearby. Different colored pens, unique pens, etc. Colors get me creative because I enjoy seeing them. I love being outdoors too. A nice quiet park or somewhere near a lake. I write more efficiently on a computer but the distractions are there. If I'm stuck on a thought I want to research it, then next thing I know I'm researching something completely unrelated. Now days I do most of my writing on the fly - like going on a road trip, I take time to write about something I saw or what I did. I also take a lot of pictures, which helps me recreate a story I want to share, because I can remember the details or the scenario better using them as reference.

Yah I have the same problem, the internet becomes a big distraction.
