I know alot of men cross their legs like women do now but when i was growing up men didn't do that. I have two grown sons & i have never seen them cross their legs. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it but i still find it strange when i see men cross their legs. I mostly see it on tv because i am not arounf too many men besides my kids. I'm just saying-----------. Your opinions, please.

Hello ANTIQUELADY When I was a child, I thought that men crossing their legs a certain way was indicative of their being a girly-man type person. However, when I grew, I grew out of my childish ways and realized what a moron I was for even thinking such things. Men cross their legs all the time. It is comfortable. It means nothing more. Even on pictures that depict Jesus on the cross, we see that his legs are crossed a bit, certainly his feet are crossed. Peace I love the world!!

PageTurner I need to disagree with you. For me, it is very unconfortable to cross my legs like a woman. I've never been able to do it and feel confortable. And about the Jesus picture, the one that I know, his legs are crossed a bit, as you said, but too different from that guys that cross the legs when they are seated. And don't you think that the answer above has a point? I believe that makes sense. Happy mylotting.

Ha..Girly Man! Havent heard that in a while. But i use to think that men were girly also when they crossed their legs. I think my reason was because i couldnt do it! Im grown and I still cant do it. I dont see how that is comfortable. I mean I have to breath...!

Hello lafredricktaylor. Glad you enjoyed the term, 'Girly Man'. Hello lctravenisk, I am glad that I could provide you with an outlet for your need. I have noticed that the bigger one is, the less likely they are to cross their legs like a woman. I suspect it is due to discomfort. What point has the answer above? And why would anyone care if men cross their legs or not, lctravenisk? It is up to each individual man.

After reading this I started thinking who I knew that crossed their legs. I don't, my daughter doesn't and I don't think I have ever seen my grandson cross his legs. COme to find out that crossing your legs can cause blood pressure problems, vericose veins and all sorts of things. Here is a ling: http://mangoboss.com/CrossingYourLegsLikeaWoman-IsItDangerousforYourHealth.html

Crossing the legs and, more especially, the arms is body language for 'my space is private: do not invade it beyond the limits I allow'. Of course, women tend to cross their legs for reasons of propriety, especially when wearing a skirt, though it also tends to round the thigh and the calf and make the leg look more shapely and attractive, if the woman happens to think she has attractive legs. The body-language message is still the same, however ... perhaps 'Yes ... but no!'. Men certainly do cross their legs though you will see fewer 'large' men doing so because it is less comfortable. It's possible that you see more men crossing their legs now than you used to do because there is much more reason to be defensive against the world in general now than there was when you were growing up. Incidentally, crossing one's legs is a bad habit that one should try to avoid because it restricts the circulation and can lead to varicose veins and DVT.

Hey, it is very interesting. I've seem some guys that cross the legs like women, but now you said it, I can see the idea that is implicit in this action. Thank you for sharing this. By the way, I still think it is very unconfortable and I am not able to do it. Happy mylotting.

I wonder if it was considered bad manners for a man to cross his legs because that would pull up his pants legs and show the supporters that held up his socks. In my memory I can see my father's white, hairy legs and those things holding up his socks. I 'm glad they started putting elastic in the tops of men's socks. Those things they used to wear to hold them up must have been uncomfortable. Do you remember, were they called supporters or garters?

I must be older than an antique, because I wore either or a girdle or a garter belt with those straps that hung down to hold up my nylons. Panty hose are so much more comfortable, but, you know, they are hotter. We got a little more air when wearing a garter belt. No comment about that girdle.

I don't know too much guys that do it, but I always see some people that do it and I've never understand it. For me it is very unconfortable and when I see at it, it looks like a very unnatural. When they put the foot on the knee, it is normal, but to cross the legs is strange. Happy mylotting.

LOL You've got me laughing Jo! You are right, it does seem weird when a man crosses their legs like a woman does however if they do it in a way where their ankle rests on one knee, then it looks pretty normal but to cross them like a woman does seem a bit uncomfortable but hey, maybe they're trying to make them shrink? Also, just to let you know, I've not had a chance to email you yet but I've not forgotten you! I'm so busy all the deg gone time and it's a wonder if I can say BOO to my own self! But I'm surviving.... or at least I think I am. I went home last night after spending two nights with mom and now I'm heading back up to mom's and don't know if she'll need me to stay over tonight or not but we'll see how it goes. Hang in there sweetie! I will get back with you!

I attended an etiquette and social graces seminar back in high school and I was told crossing legs should be done by gentlemen. Women, on the other hand, must refrain from crossing legs. Instead, women can "cross" the legs with the other behind one not one knee on top of the other.

A friend of mine does that all the time. And he is not a 'feminine' type of male either; in fact, he could be considered as a womanizer at times He'd either put one leg on the other or cross his legs especially when he sits down while he smokes.

hi antique lady! i haven't seen a lot of men in my experience who cross their legs in the same manner as ladies, but i have seen them cross their legs in an expansive way, with their ankle resting on the opposite knee....this seems to be a comfortable position which i have engaged in while wearing jeans...when i was in a college choir, when we visited places to perform, our director did not allow us young ladies to cross our legs at all stating that in formal etiquette it is considered rude...we had to cross our legs at the ankle, which i found very uncomfortable long term...(we also could not chew gum for the same reason)...as we were wearing long dresses i personally did not see how this could be rude...but i digress, we were talking about men...i am a fan of king george VI of great britain, the man who was featured in the movie "the king's speech" ...i have noticed in pictures of him and his grandson prince charles that they have their legs crossed in the way that you mention...i think king george vi was an exceptionally brave man overcoming his difficult childhood and disabilities and being an admirable leader to his country during WWII....it is difficult for me to think of him in any way but admiringly....i think that it is just a matter of what is comfortable to a person...it is important who they are and how they treat others, not how they appear or look or sit...

My dad never did it, and none of my many uncles did it, or grandfather. So when I did see a man do that I thought it was sissy. Of course that isn't true, but I still do take notice when a man does cross his legs. It just seems odd.

hi antiquelady yes I have seen men cross their legs and I got thr idea it was mostly business men who do this like it relaxes their legs and maybe their tensions from work.I have never seen my son cross his legs except when he shows off some yoga positions lol I never see this with men say on buses or trains though. I'guess they only do this when bored or stressed out. guessing of course. I finally got the idea this is only done if one is really stressed out.

Hi Anti! I responded to a discussion yesterday that was talking about feminine traits in me and one of them was crossing their legs. When I grew up, the closest I got to seeing men crossing their legs was when men would rest one leg on top of the other so that it looked kind of like a T... if that makes sense. Most men just sat there with their legs kind of spread out... oh how comfy! I remember my mother telling me to keep my legs together or to cross them! I remember when crossing legs in men was a sign of being gay... I don't think it really was.. I think it is a stereotype. I think men sit however they feel comfortable, and it can be comfortable (for awhile) to cross your legs... I guess even if you are male. My dad never even made a T with his legs. He always kind of sat there with his feet apart... my brother was the same way.. I don't think they would have felt comfortable crossing their legs because of having a package that might get pinched... I don't know how some men are capable of crossing their legs in a feminine way... OUCH!!! is all I can say.

I don't feel anything wrong or strange when men crosses their legs. Well it's one wish to do that and we don't have the right to question them. I don't used to cross my legs. I just used to keep my legs straight when i sit.
