but I am at work and my client was watching the Olympics. We saw the 8 person rowing competition. These ladies took the gold and they are people to be proud of. At the end when they were showing the medals being awarded I was pleased to see the nine young ladies actually singing along with the Star Spangled Banner. I was very impressed. Have you watched any of the Olympics? Do most teams sing their national anthem when it is played?

I know some countries (like Spain) don't have words to their anthems which I didn't know until recently, so they're not being rude not singing them. Some of the Brits don't sing the anthem either - usually because they are anti-Royal as it mentions the Queen..a lot..lol. I noticed Sir Chris Hoy didn't sing it and I'm a bit miffed as it was the Queen who knighted him! I absolutely love watching sports on television. I've been doing so since a very young age. Obviously, it's wonderful if a Brit wins anything but I'm also impressed by the venues shown and the support by the crowds. The rowing has been awesome and it's even better when the Aussies complain about the noise of the crowd interfering with the coxswain as they can't hear what he's shouting to them. Haha! GOOD!

It seems like every two or three months someone famous really blows it on the Star Spangled Banner. Then the tune. . . it is challenging, and pretty elaborate, but people do not want to sing it as written and they sometimes sound like cats just yowling.

Well, now I have learned something about no words, or not singing in protest of the royalty. At lower level events that are not televised I frequently am the only one around me singing. Hubby will move his lips and be very quiet, as he cannot carry a tune in a bucket, but he loves music.

Yes, I guess there is the embarrassment factor involved. Also, people are mindful of getting the words wrong. Was it Christine Aguilera that fluffed the words of the Star-Spangled Banner a couple of years ago? If the eyes of the world were on me I'd just move my mouth if I wasn't sure of the words and hope for the best. Fortunately, our anthem is very short so there's no excuse really NOT to sing the anthem..but I don't hold it against people. At the end of the day it's up to them.

I've seen snippets of it but hardly paid attention to it at all. I suppose singing the national anthem isn't all that uncommon. They are probably proud of their accomplishments and that of their team and are overcome with such joy that they feel pride and want to sing it..

Many people say it is hard to sing, and I seldom hear people sing it at more local events. I also liked that they were all given small bouquets.

Our National Anthem? I remember singing it in school, I forget which grade though. I just tried to sing it now, and a no go for me... I'm trying to remember when I've heard it sung at a local event and I can't think of anythign either...

A few years back I was doing security at some event that had a lot of sessions, I am thinking it was a wrestling state championship. Each session was opened by a different group singing the Star Spangled Banner, from different competing schools, etc. I was impressed.

I am not into sports so do not watch the Olympics and it is getting more political now and not into the sport. I do love the figure skating though but that does cone in the winter olympics. I love dancing. I really have not paid any attention to other then when they get the gold, silver, or bronze medal to see if they actually sing or not.

The politicizing of sport is one reason I do not usually watch it. I understand the attraction of figure skating and dance, those would interest me too. I had no choice about the television, and I was really impressed with the achievement of these women teams. Canada was a very close second.

I had the same problem when my husband was alive and when our sons came over. All Sports fanatics and I do not like the political correctness of the games. Also and how some countries cheat to get medals. Years ago, it was the USSR, but now it is Communist China.

I am watching so much of it and it has been wonderful. The U. S. are such good sports and patriotic. They all sing the Star Spngled Banner as far as I have noticed. Tonight though, I am supporting Jamaica and tomorrow too as the athletics will be on. Gonna be hot, hot, hot!

It will not be a walkover as the US is very strong!!!!! It will be quite a showdown between both countries. We can't take it for granted that Jamaica will win. The US competitors have been such good sports. All of the UDA should feel pride in their performances. Absolutely wonderful

Maybe someday cricket will be included. Yes, all teams should be very proud of their country and of their teams.

I don't think that cricket will ever be included in the Olympics as most countries do not play it at the elite level. It was featured in the Commonwealth games quite a few years ago, but they chose not to continue it. I would like to see it back in the Commonwealth games as it would mean more medal chances for the Aussies!

I have not watched any of this Olympics at all. This is probably the first time that I have not been interested in the slightest in the event. Sydney was huge for me, I watched a lot as the games were in Australia and I was into it still in Beijing, but this time I have not been interested at all. Maybe it is just the ongoing corporatism of it or the fact that the Aussies were not going to do as well this time. I don't really know. I guess I just like to go out and enjoy life myself instead of watching it on TV too.

Well, watching it kind of fell within the work duty category. We are to be social support to our clients and do things with them. He chose to watch the Olympics and so I did with him. I understand what you mean about the corporatism, also the politicizing of the whole thing. Countries trying to outdo each other, etc. I was very impressed by the fast rowers, though. Awesome and fit women.

So, by social support do you mean that you are looking after elderly or disabled?

In the past I liked to watch sports. But today I seldom watch it since I even don't often watch TV. My life is busy with work and my family. But there is still an exception. I am still interested in the big sports events like Olympics or Fifa World Cup. After all, we can only watch it once for four years. In usual I just watch the news from TV for a while. I love China

They play the national anthem for each medalist or team that wins a medal. I just had never noticed that the competitors, or any one else for that matter sang along. I was just very touched.

I have not watched any of the Olympics so far. I would love to though. I am glad those young ladies won! All of the young people who are at the Olympics all worked so hard to get there. I was watching a YouTube video last night and there was a commercial before the video come on. The commercial was a 3 minute bit about the Olympics and one young lady who moved away from her family to live with someone else while she trained for the Olympics. So much sacrifice by someone so young. She was 15 at the time she moved and then she celebrated her 16th birthday and Christmas in a new place. I admire those young men and women!

It really takes dedication to achieve at this level. I do think they represent the best in our young people today.

I had to record the gymnastics because they were aired so stinking late. It is one of my favorite events. It was midnight before it came on. I saw some of that 8 person rowing...it's neat. I also saw this one endurance run and this lady from Kenya just smoked everyone when the bell rang for the final lap. I think that when they win a gold that they do actually get to have their anthems played.

dear I dont normaly watch sports either but i wanted to see the olmpics. I like the winter olmpics better but i like the summer olmpics also. My favorite was the womens swimming and gymastics. I have only watched a couple of segments of the olymics so i wouldn't know if every team plays the anthem when they play.

Yeah i am big fan of sports and when it comes to Olympics, i do not miss out a single action. I have been watching the 3 editions of Olympics and have been enjoying each of them. Yes i have seen many players getting emotional while their national anthem is being played but it is not mandatory to sing it.

I think that is why I found it so touching. It is not required for them to sing it, and they get very emotional when they do.

Usually they pay someone, a performer, to sing the National Anthem at most of the things I have seen. That is why I felt so good to see the athletes sing it like they meant it.

I have watched some of the events. Not as many as I would have liked to watch though. I did watch a recap of an event where one of the Brits were singing their national anthem.

So much of what gets publicized is the negative aspect of competition. This was absolutely refreshing to me. I really liked what was said about their team work in training as well. It made me very proud. They were so respectful and you could tell that they had worked incredibly hard as a team.

Hi GG, I can't even imagine rowing like that in a competition. I only saw a tiny bit of it. Those girls should be proud of that accomplishment and I'm sure worked many, many hours, days, and years to get there. I would imagine most sing their national anthems when they come on. When I did watch it, they did sing it. I have not kept up with the Olympics this year, just don't seem to interested in it. I do watch football sometimes in the fall, and that's about it.

As for me, I watch television a lot. I am not a person crazy.about sport that would skip my sleep for sports competitions broadcast. However, this is the Olympics that we are talking about. So I actually wanted to watch. It does not matter to me who wins, I just want to enjoy the effort and their performances. Unfortunately, my dad and his girl always watched dramas and makes it impossible for me to watch the olympics.

Yes I am very fond of Olympics. I got involved in its craze the last time and eagerly waited for it to come. I love players from my country singing their national anthem at the podium. We have managed just one medal so far but I am really proud. Also to stand at the podium representing your country is a very memorable moment for a player.
