... not only in the train but in a bus too! I know about this rule a long time ago. But last month, I was into deep thoughts about something - I suddenly forgot about the rules! I was busy on BBM and listening to my playlist - When suddenly an inspector asked about something which I can't hear much coz I had the music in full volume. Til I learned it was about the gum I was chewing! I was asked to get down the next stop with him. Asked for my ID and more than a hundred bucks as a penalty for violating a rule. He called another guy, probably a supervisor. I was trying to tell them that I won't do such thing anymore and told them I forgot about the rule But then the inspector insisted that I pay the fine, so I had to agree and tell them I am paying. The supervisor suddenly gave me back my ID and just advised me not to do such thing again for which I am really grateful for. I guess he assumed I am very new to this country as my ID was just issued few months back. I swear I will never be absent-minded again. In my country it is okay to eat and drink inside buses and trains. What about in your country? Have you been in such situation?

Gosh, it was just a gum, for God's sake... A chewing gum is not real food... I don't know what it is... But it does break the rules, I'm sure... The stupid inspector was over-doing it... In my country, buses or trains are public property. People choose to do anything and everything.. It is way beyond sanity... If some inspector tried to stop people then he'll be beaten up by all and the authorities will issue him a memo for trying disturb the general peace... Are you shocked, EN? Well, this is India... Anything can happen here.. No one likes rules and take pleasure in breaking those... I'm gonna get out of here as soon as I can... Take care dear...

I love this term, EN... 'Doing his job...'! Here no public officer does the job.. In fact, they prefer, never to do the job... People in private sector work real hard... And if a private sector guy like me, goes to Government offices, we find it very dull... LOL... The officers in Dubai must be very good, no doubt they have made such a progress... Oh yes, I'll get away from here... Asap! I have my interview tomorrow for that Dubai job... :-). Wish me luck Missy...

Hi mr_pearl, I actually understand that the inspector is just doing his job. I guess he’s afraid that if he let me go he will also have a warning from his management. But good thing was that he called up his supervisor. I guess he called him because I was telling him to just let me go and swear that I will not do such violation again. He was firm with his answer that I must pay. But thanks to him for calling the attention of another guy who never said a word but just returned my ID without me paying and only spoke when he said not to do such thing again. Well, it’s really shocking to know about such cases in India. That is why some people abused the freedom and people with authorities. They won’t gain respect if they allow such thing to happen. Good luck and hope that you’d safely run away from there.

Great! so those public officers there are getting paid for doing nothing! I must have known that as in my country there were people from the government who gets their salary even when not going to work. Yes they have a very strict rule here although sometimes it's a bit too much too. But last night as we are waiting for a train going home... we saw a guy who's even cleaning the sanitizing the trash can... and so we started comparing Dubai and Philippines again... Wish you get that job

Hi jai So what happened dear? Have you been caught? Was there any fine? Or they just warned you? I guess warnings are issued to visitors... Yes it is embarrassing. But when I was in that scenario, thankfully there were less people outside the Metro. It was evening that time so there were less people Inside the train it is not so full too. Probably the reason why the inspector saw me chewing.

It is sad when other people get punished for things that a few people don't have the common sense or decency to abide by. Such as not-making-a-mess on public transport. But I guess that's the only way to keep public buses and trains clean. It's great that you didn't have to pay! I have not been keeping up to date with all of the discussion here on myLot, but how long have you been there? Are you working there now?

Hi bounce, Some people won't litter even when eating inside public transit, but I guess as a precaution they have implemented this rule in order that they can keep their government-owned vehicles clean. I should've have realized it before I got caught Yes, it's really great the other guy has a compassion over this poor little girl I was here before for four years, and went back to my country, til I decided to come back again. Now, I'm here for 5 months already and working... I didn't made a discussion about me being here actually, it's just now that I made a post about this country =) 'Though there is one myLotter who knew where I was coz she was a friend in FB.

I agree with you stowyk. We don't care we just throw things out the street and everywhere whenever we want to. Would you believe, that in the building where I'm staying there is already a garbage room in every floor so we don't need to go down the building... but some tenants are so rude they leave their trash either outside the garbage room or scattered inside. It only takes a single move to let our trashes slide down the trash bin.

Oh good to know they spare you from paying the penalty. You are from Philippines too right? In MRT and LRT, eating inside is not allowed but in buses eating is okay as you can see vendors going inside the buses during heavy traffics. Lol.

Hi shylade, Yes thank God I was spared And yup I am from the Philippines but I am not aware too that it is not allowed to eat in MRT and LRT. Reason was I don't ride on trains in our country coz I don't need to. When I was working there, the only transport I can take going to work is just a bus or jeepneys. But it's nice to know it from you, in case I would have to take the train in our country I'd be aware of it and will never be fined for breaking a law. I've been on MRT and LRT before 'though but I didn't eat anything. It is true, vendors are getting up on buses and sell foods and drinks. I love the smell of nuts!

Hi again! Yes, foods and drinks are not allowed inside the MRT and LRT. You will see signs inside. What I hate about riding buses here is people are like sardines inside yet the bus conductor will still call for more passengers. Also, even with that situation, the vendors will still come in and will really push you just to sell their stuffs. Lol. Anyway, it's their way of living and they will do everything just to earn peso. I know you are aware of our current situations here.

I do know about that... Those are what exactly I hate in our country as a commuter. If there were no seats available you really have to stand up the whole time. And be pushed with those who came up the bus even if it;s full.. and that's because the bus conductor are still allowing them to ride, thought the bus it's fully packed.

Wow! I ate on a bus in Hong Kong once, didn't get caught though! Good thing there was no inspector around. The reason why food and drinks aren't allowed because there are slobs who do not have the decency to properly dispose of their trash. Unfortunately, the state of buses here in the Philippines is - YUCKY. Even if you don't physically see trash, all that grime on the walls and floor just means that the bus company/ conductor/ inspector/ kind-hearted passenger disposed of the trash but did not clean up the mess from the trash. YUCK!

binggaling! I know what you mean! ugh! it hasen't happened to me yet, though I'm real finicky. One time I rode a bus and the window sills were all grimy, the floor was even grimier. I didn't let any part of myself touch the wall, didn't even want my feet to touch the floor. EEW. The bus looked and smelled musty! sheesh! I really wish they'd implement a no eating rule. Seriously!

Hi knicnax, That's true. Sometimes I was hoping that these kinds of rules be implemented in the Philippines too. But I doubt people will obey and authorities might abuse the citizen too. You how bad the system in our country is. Good that there were no inspector around when you ate on a bus in HK My brother got lucky too. We were riding a train going home that night but he has to ride the opposite route with his colleague. They were also chewing a gum and even blowing it. When I told him about what happened, he thank God that there no inspector saw them that night.

Sounds a bit draconian to me. We (in the UK) can eat and drink on buses and trains as long as we don't litter the place. At least they applied common-sense and let you off with a warning. By the way, you weren't listening to cheesy music were you? Maybe that is why they wanted to make an example of you.

On the train here for long journeys, say between Edinburgh and London, they actually serve food to you, so actively encourage you to eat. That makes sense from a health perspective and also makes money for the train operators.

I guess that's what everyone must be. Sadly, not every people obey law. Some don;t even care if they get a warning or not. In a way, the rule is really good as it helps make their public transit always clean. The farthest travel is more than an hour only within this city so I guess that's okay. But if it's in my country where you have to travel more hours in distant provinces then people will be starving inside buses and trains. You got me... I was listening to cheesy music

We can expect that for long journeys since I guess there will be train workers who'll clean up the mess. And yeah it's a nice business to for train operators Here, there are business stalls outside every station, so when people are hungry then they can get down and buy something there, but well journeys are too short here.

I have never been on a train. So I have no idea if a person here can eat on a train or not. I have not been on a bus in for a long time. I don't think you are suppose to eat on the bus. I don't think you get fined if you are caught eating. At least that is what I think. It sucks that you get fined for chewing gum! That is crazy!

When I'm in Singapore last year I asked the question to a Singaporean friend of mine "why is eating and drinking inside a bus and train illegal?". He just laugh at me and simply answered back that "our government sometimes implements ridiculous laws" one example is this one. And added that "not all people here in our country are in favor of the laws implemented by the government, sometimes many thinks that it suppresses our freedom".

Hi Fulltank, So that means even their own people find those rules ridiculous. Actually same silly rules are implemented here in this country. But come to think of it, this rule in public transit is actually great becoz we're sure that we're riding in a neat and clean buses and trains.

Hi godmom Whoa! thats really bad. I mean it is okay if they have such a rule due to cleanliness issues but then there are many other ways to keep the city clean. A penalty of 100.00 too seems to harsh but then, rules are rules. You were lucky that they handed over the ID as soon as you paid. In India, we have no such rules, we are free to eat and do almost any other thing almost anywhere we like - only restriction - our conscience. Maybe, I should not travel out of my country to be safe. I wish you safer travels as long as you are there in the new place.

Hi godson I guess that huge amount is one way for them to make everyone take such rule seriously. That is already more than a thousand pesos in my country. To be specific the fine is Dhs 110. If you hit the emergency button inside the train, prepare yourself to pay a fine of Dhs 2000! Harsh - but as you say, rules are rules. And this is the only way they can think of to make people obey their rules. Both our countries have no such rule, the only thing is that people have not been very responsible in cleaning up their own mess. And oh godson, nope the guy didn’t took the money. We were supposed to go down the station office for me to pay. But when I started to move near the lift with them, the supervisor handed me my ID and stopped me from going to their office. So I was absolved! I’ve saved my 110 Dhs.

Is that rule in Dubai? Well, as you know , here in our country, it's not that strict. So that explains why some bus would become so dirty after all the passengers has alighted. It's a good thing , the the inspector maybe took pity on you. But then, they say, ignorance excuses no one when it comes to rules. Though, there's always the first time.

Hi Miss D, Yes that’s one of the public transit rule here. That’s right in our country we are free to eat and drink anything we want. But we never clean our own trash instead just leave everything in the bus. Some even stick the gums on seats which is really disgusting. I understand why some countries, including this country, prefers to have such strict rule. I know that there is no excuse to what I did that is why when I felt I was absolved I was grateful with the supervisor. He just smiled at me and said not to do it again now that I am aware of it. I was actually aware but my mind was in some place that time, gheez!

Really! I don't really have any idea which countries implement such rules in public transits. I guess if we really want our country be clean and people disciplined, my own country has to implement the same rule. I have noticed its difference from my country to this country. And you are right, they don't want the bus dirty and smelly. I'm lucky that I was not asked to pay when I was caught chewing.

I know the Washington DC Metro system has a ban on food and drink on their trains..not so sure about their buses, but I'd assume the rules would be the same for their whole commuter network...but in recent hot weather, they'd posted a relaxation of the rule for a limited time, permitting passengers to drink water on board.. Trains in the UK offer buffet services on some routes,so I don't think the food and drink thing is a problem on those..! I can sympathise that you were only chewing gum,not eating or drinking as such, but working in a hotel, finding gum attached to the furniture where somebody stuck it before eating a meal is quite gross, and somebody has to clean it off..sounds like your transport system is being pre-emptive about deterring rule breakers..
@enelym001 (8322)

HI ShepherdSpy, Yes it was actually a good and tough rule they;re implementing. People will really be obedient about it once they got a warning or got penalized. Like what you've said about people who attached their gums on furniture, this could also happen if a person like me is riding on the Metro. I guess that is just fair and I do understand them why the inspector have to asked me to get down and penalized me. It's just nice that I was permitted to go and not pay. Instead they just warned/advised me never to do it again. I hope, like in Washington Metro System, they would allow us also to drink at least on this very hot and humid season.

HI dear pergammano, Nice to see you once again It was an experience I would not forget as it thought me to really comply and never forget about such rule. Although it wasn’t that embarrasing as there were only few people outside the train. Inside the train, I didn’t notice the people as my music is still in full volume while going out. I just heard one lady telling me… it’s a thousand bucks penalty. As I observed lately some inspectors are coming up on buses too to check if all passengers really tap their bus cards when getting on and off the bus. I saw one lady on the same bus where I was riding last week being questioned and was asked to go with him. Not sure what’s her violation. I’m so happy God really loves me. I’ve heard it happened to my old roommate before, and she paid that hundred bucks penalty. Glad I was asked not to. Wow, travelling is something I wanna do too.. Goodluck on your plans and always observe every country’s rules and regs.

That was a rule that I seen in New York City when I was there visiting in April. I have to say that even though it was posted on the sub ways and the buses that eating and drinking is not allowed but no one seemed to follow it. People got on the sub way with drinks and with food and ate it while riding the sub way. I think that for them its a factor for them to keep the sub ways clean. I was shocked but they were super clean so maybe it works if they people follow it. As for the inspector going from car to car enforcing the rule that is another story and it was not being done. So I guess till some one complains enough its not a big deal here as long as the sub way cars stay clean. I have to say that I was just as guilty but in my defense I was eating pizza and I am sorry but if you have ever had New York Pizza then you know how hard it is to stop eating it for any reason unless its gone.

HI autumnrose, It's nice to know that even when people seem not to follow what was posted on sub ways they are still not leaving any traces of junks, so it's still super clean. I guess if everyone does the same, then there won't be rules like this. I love pizza too so I understand why you would break a rule just to eat New York Pizza

It's a very good idea to adopt. In our country eating and drinking is allowed in a train or a bus but the only precaution is to be taken to throw the wastage in a dustbin but instead all are habitual of throwing it outside of a running bus or a train, not bothering about which may cause an injury to a passer by.
