For seven years I have lived within walking distance of a train station. From my bungalow I can walk down a close, cross the road and be on a flat pathway that takes me all the way to the train station. In addition my local train station is wheelchair accessible. It has disabled parking spaces as well.
Years ago I lived in a village miles from a countryside train station. I had to cycle there and it was too far to walk. If I walked it was along narrow country lanes. I used to take my bike on the train to where I worked.
Where I live now I can hear the trains go past. It is wonderful to hear the trains and know it isn't long until my next train ride.
Do you live near a train station like within walking distance?
Are the platforms wheelchair accessible at your nearest train station?
In your life have you lived near to a train station or did you need to take other transport to it?

Here in the States, well, most of them, trains aren't the way to travel anymore. A lot of people ride buses when they can't afford either car or plane travel. Only in the north east are the trains very useful.
Oh, they forced us to have Metro Train here, but it only runs from basically north west to east central, then you have to take a bus to where ever else, or take your bike with you. Heck, our city buses also have bike racks on the front for those who need to bike after they get off our, so called, mass transit here.

I got the impression many Amtrak trains run late. I was traveling in California and the train was running five hours late. I arrived at midnight so they offered a free hotel bed or a free taxi ride. I decided I wanted the free taxi ride. It cost the train company 40 dollars. I felt ashamed arriving at the youth hostel that late. The other time the train arrived at midnight again, that time in dangerous LA. I felt in danger taking the bus that late.
I like the sound of the bike racks.

Travelling by train is not common in our country. Only in Metro Manila you can find 2 kinds of train. One traveling in different cities around Manila and the other one traveling from Manila to selected provinces in Luzon.
I live here in Mindanao, the only option for us to travel either to ride a bus and a jeepney. If you want to go Manila from Mindanao, 3 options: By plane, by ship or vessel and bus but some places the bus will ride also in a vessel.

Philippines consist of a series of small islands which are divided by sea from each other.Maybe this is the reason why train are unpopular there.Train cannot go through the ocean unless we construct a tunnel under the sea. However, the technical requirement and the fee are both very high.

Hi maximax8, the nearby small train station is 5 km away from my home. It usually would take about 8 minutes to drive there during heavy traffic moment. On the way three schools and a tuition center are available and this would make the traffic slow during certain moment. I could say I rarely travel by train. I go there quite often for my elder brother and sister in law are fond to travel by train for 50% discount is given to senior citizen
I always drive them there to board the transport.
Happy posting

Hi Ikbooi. It is lovely that you live just 5km from a train station. I think it is wonderful pensioners get a 50 percent discount on train fares. It is a shame about the heavy traffic on the way from where you live to the train station.

We moved here last October and its walking distance from the train station. I like the sound of trains going past and its a good way to travel. If the weather is bad, then I can take the bus to the train station, as the bus stop is at the train station.

On island there is no train station. In the past there was a train station here, but that was many years ago. Today we only have a bus station. We want to travel by train we have to go the neigbour island and catch the train there. When I lived on the peninsula there was a train station in my town. I was able to walk from my home to the train station in about 15 or 20 minutes, so it wasn't that far from my home. When I lived in Odense on the neighbour island I lived in a suburb and I had to catch a bus from my home to the train station. At first I had to walk to the bus station and when the bus arrived it took me about half an hour to get to the train station.

It is a shame the island you live on has a bus station and not any trains. It is great the next door island has a train service. It sounded convenient for you when you lived on the peninsula. I like being able to walk to the train station. When you lived in Odense it was a shame you had to take a bus for half an hour to get to the train station. Denmark's islands are so lovely and picturesque I can understand living on one of the places that doesn't have a train station.

Years ago my family & I lived in a small apartment in Brooklyn, NY. The apartment was right above a train station. At first the sounds of the trains going & coming at all times of the day & night drove me crazy, but it wasn't long before I grew used to the sound. After we moved a way I had the hardest time falling asleep because I missed the sounds of the trains. Till this day I still miss that, although I no longer have any trouble falling asleep....LOL

It is interesting that you got used to the train sounds. To begin with those sounds drove you crazy and then it was that you missed the sounds once you moved away. I can relate to that because I heard plane sounds in 2005 but got used to them. I moved in 2010 and now I hear the trains.

I live near a railway station, but it is not a station that carries passengers. It is only a small railway station for goods because there is a much bigger one in the city. Yet I can hear the coming and going of the trains, especially in the evening. Those people living a few meters away from the railway must be bothered a lot by the noise of the trains.

My sister's house is close to a railway station and I do hear the trains and it doesn't bother me in the least as it reminds me of my childhood. She is also close to the Thames so I can walk there and along the path to Kew Bridge.
What I hate though, is that the planes to land at Heathrow begin at 5.30am every morning right over the house and it wakes me every time. This I cannot ber. No, her railway station is not wheelchair accessible at all. In fact the gap is so wide that I ha to be assisted after bypass surgery to even get on the train
The station is Mortlake, by the way

I like the sound of the riverside path to Kew Bridge. The River Thames is very picturesque. I have been around the area of Kingston, Teddington, Richmond and Hampton Court.
It is a shame planes arrive at Heathrow very early in the morning. Yes, they are so very loud and I feel sorry for people like you being woken up. It is a shame your sister's nearest station isn't wheelchair accessible. It was awful the gap was so big. I am glad you had assistance to get on the train after your bypass surgery.

Yes,the railway station is hardly less than half a kilometer from my house. The railway tracks are even nearer. They pass just a stone's throw from our residence.I keep hearing the trains passing.Hearing the trains passing is really a thrilling experience for me.I begin imagining about the towns, jungles and lonely places they had passed through before arriving at our railway station. We don't have to hire any rickshaw or taxi or any bus if we have to go to the railway station.

Hi maximax8, I am living near to the three major train station here, the nearest one is only walking distance around 2 blocks away. The wheelchair platforms are very accessible and they can use a special lane for disable person. When I am still working i always ride a train to reach my destination because this is the fastest and cheapest transportation to me.

Hi Bhebelen. Thanks for your wonderful response. I can see you like traveling by train a lot and are happy to live just two blocks from the train station. I enjoy hearing that the platforms are wheelchair accessible and trains are cheap plus fast.

I have lived near a motorway and near a railway station and I know which one I prefer. It is definitely the railway station because the trains are intermittant, unlike the continuous drone of the motorway. The air is cleaner, no pollution from petrol and where I lived there was a high grassy embankment leading up to the tracks which was pleasant to look at.
I had to walk uphill to the station, it took about 15 minutes but as I was always late I did a mix of walking and running! I was young enough in those days. As a result I was also much slimmer...

I too used to live near a train station, but not so close that the trains would be a disturbance. It was very convenient to be able to walk just minutes to the station. Even when you can hear the noise of the trains, or traffic if you live near a busy road, it is amazing how well your ears adjust to it and after a little while you don't even notice the noise at all.

Well, for my 26 years I haven't ride a train yet! The only medium of transportation here in our city are public vehicles like jeepneys and buses! Also taxis, how I wish I can ride a train someday! But also when I heard about the story in Manila, on how difficult to wait for a train in a crowd of passengers, I wish not at all!
Anyway, I am happy to hear that you have a good means of transpo there my friend! Happy mylotting, you got a nice topic here!

It is one of my dream to ride a train as I have not done that ever since. I have ridden a metro rail transit which is powered by electricity one time but the standard train which i usually see in the old movies perhaps coal powered is one of my dream. To feel the movement and hear the whistle, wow, I think that would be exciting.

Maxi, a few years ago i lived quite near to the train station. But, it is still not as near as yours. I still need to ride a car, to be able to reach that train station. Everyday, we can hear the noise of the train whenever it is passing through our area. When my child is still a baby, he always cried whenever the train is passing through our area. He scared to hear the train sound.

About 7-8 years before when I was looking for an apartment, I found one which was so close by the rail tracks (abut 100 ft.) from the tracks. and 2-3 mts. from the railway station. As it was on the ground floor and one window was opening to the tracks, I didn't prefer the house. Also, it may by much noisy at all times as this is a route of 6 tracks and atlest in 1 mts. 1-2 trains will pass throught the tracks and it must be much disturbing even in day and night. The mail trains will pass through even late nights, almost 24 hrs a day there will be trains on the tracks.
And even now also I am planning to go for a new aprtment which I want to get from a walkable distance, ie 5-7 mts. and I gone to a place where there is a flat to be sold. When I contacted, he asked to meet on Sat/Sunday to have a talk. In fact 6 months before I met him and seen the flat and it is ok. I got surprised that the flat is not yet sold. So, I may go for it, but my wife and children don't want to move from the place where I am living now.

No, but I sued to live near the railroad tracks and the train station was right Down the road from where I used to live for 6 yr, my daughter grew up near the tracks and I thought she would loose her hearing because mlet of the time the trains blow horn was so very loud it would wake us up! I remember when I was pregnant with her how she would jump and I would feel it whenever the train would pass by. I don't live there now and we r all relieved not to live there anymore. Before I had kids I was filled with worry that they would play by the tracks and one day...die by the...train. But that never happened! All that worrying and for what!??
I really didn't like the train it would wake us up in odd hours in the night/morning.

I dont live near the railway station, its not too far from our house, but not in walk able distance. I enjoy watching trains, while moving, and also like travelling in trains, the only problem is , it should be neat, other wise, i just cant .
